SPEAKERS

Santa Paul Scheer, SuChin Pak, Kulap Vilaysack

Kulap Vilaysack  00:00

This is how we do it.

Kulap Vilaysack  00:18

Welcome back to our California Winter Wonderland. I am auntie Kuku Vilaysack.

SuChin Pak  00:21

And I’m auntie Su, you know, we both have already said that we have put all shopping on hold, like nothing can continue, you’re 99% there, until we record this episode, not until this returning seasonal guest, always welcome is the holiday season really complete, and I would say for me, because I like to start a little later the holiday season doesn’t get started until this guest has been recorded.

SuChin Pak  00:22

Well Su, you’re a normal person. I think we’ve established that I’m the weirdo that started November.

SuChin Pak  01:03

We’ve established that but maybe maybe around this time maybe around this time. Yes. Okay. All right.

Kulap Vilaysack  01:08

Well, that’s a reminder then perhaps a reminder. Su, Carters, Nibblings do not worry are santa is all gifts no cole. He is our male gift quarter and finder of diamonds in the rough. He’s also an actor, comedian, improviser, writer, podcaster, producer and director, also a community organizer and activist dear friend, and come on, the very definition of a renaissance man, bring out the milk and cookies, land the reindeer and please welcome back, Santa Paul Scheer.

Santa Paul Scheer  01:45

Oh, ho. Oh, I like let’s do it. People, you are catching me, you’re catching me on an interesting day because Kulap. You and I have had private conversations off air, about are you starting too early?

SuChin Pak  02:02

I saying are you is, okay, got it, got. I wasn’t sure if it was a royal one.

Santa Paul Scheer  02:09

No, difficultly it’s Kulap. Because I, I have felt that Kulap short trips, Halloween to Thanksgiving, that weird middle ground.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:22

You call it sort of a transitional period you were trying to.

Santa Paul Scheer  02:24

Yes, we take the witch off the hay bale. And we turn the pumpkin around. We take the scary face away. And we have a whole pumpkin, that little moment, that little moment where we embrace fall. And now here’s what I’ll say. Whatever you’re doing is perfect. It’s great, and I used to feel maybe, you are doing this a little too early, and then today, I went to Target and everything is out and everything is on the shelves, and it flipped the switch flipped in me I was ready to go. I texted June, my wife and I said we gotta get the target ASAP. Because gonna be gone and make sure we get the things that we need. Because I’m a big believer that online shopping doesn’t cut it for Christmas decorations.

SuChin Pak  03:15

You got to feel it, you got to feel the crinkle you got to see how much of the glitter comes off when you touch it. You know, you got to see what is the contact, you know.

Santa Paul Scheer  03:27

So all this to say, you’re getting me in a prime Christmas mood. Like I.

SuChin Pak  03:34

Rushed the seal is broken.

Santa Paul Scheer  03:36

The seal is broken. There was a moment where I’m like, is it too early? I’m already having anxiety about getting things.

Kulap Vilaysack  03:46

Where is November? It’s gone.

Santa Paul Scheer  03:48

You’re right. And you know what? And this is maybe where and I admit when I’m wrong. Maybe I came down on you too hard, maybe I said you know what? Maybe there’s no time for transition. Maybe the transition is a mere handful of days. November one to November.

SuChin Pak  04:05

Yeah, transition you don’t need three weeks to turn a pumpkin around.

Santa Paul Scheer  04:10

I don’t want no no.

SuChin Pak  04:11

I would say you can turn a pumpkin around and just have a day.

Santa Paul Scheer  04:15

The day after Thanksgiving is where I flip the switch. That’s Normal.

SuChin Pak  04:20

I’m talking about the Halloween pumpkin. I’m talking about that Halloween pumpkin.

Kulap Vilaysack  04:24

And I want to give I want to give the listeners a little bit more context. This conversation happened mid October when we went to a Christmas.

Santa Paul Scheer  04:33

Pre-Halloween.

Kulap Vilaysack  04:35

Pre-Halloween. We went to a Christmas shop we went to traditions deep into the valley. Canoga Park.

Santa Paul Scheer  04:39

Loved it.

Kulap Vilaysack  04:40

And we loved it. But then we talked to each other on the drive home. On the drive home we had that conversation.

Santa Paul Scheer  04:47

Well, because I was trying to rein in my feelings because it felt so close but yet it’s so far we hadn’t even had Halloween yet. It felt like I don’t want to get too pumped about this. There’s too many variables in the way. There’s too much time. And I wanted to make sure that I manage my own expectations. But you know what? Ku, show me.

Kulap Vilaysack  05:13

I’m gonna introduce something to you. That’s a little crude, Paul, my dear friend, friend for years, but Christmas edging, right, we’re not blind. We’re doing it in phases. We’re taking it up. And then we’re, and then we’re going forward, and then.

Santa Paul Scheer  05:31

I’m all on board. Well, I’ll tell you the thing that you have brought into my life. I love the idea of getting it done early. Getting it all done before December one, which is right here, this podcast, you’re getting it right under the line, right? Days before.

Kulap Vilaysack  05:48

Days before, it’s about protecting December, everybody protecting you. You are December, dare I say.

Santa Paul Scheer  05:54

I’m only doing one show in December one.

Kulap Vilaysack  05:57

That’s for Paul Scheer.

SuChin Pak  06:02

And then the rest, wait, and then the rest is tree time?

Santa Paul Scheer  06:05

Well, I think that I’m going to make myself more open to parties and make myself more available. As a matter of fact, you know, look at tree time, I’m gonna say I will just say that, you know, there was a person who reached out to me who I think wanted to go to the same party as I’m going to and asked to switch a date a performance date with me and I said, No, I am committed to party over switching dates. Normally I’m amenable, but I put my foot down his Christmas year. Yes.

SuChin Pak  06:38

Not this year. Paul?

Santa Paul Scheer  06:40

Not this year.

Kulap Vilaysack  06:42

Wow, okay. Now, Paul, for people who’ve just joined us. I remember the first time Lo those many years ago, probably three four years ago. You brought in some knowledge about how to approach purchasing for your partner purchasing for the Paul in your life if you will. You were very clear like don’t fuck with ties. Don’t fuck with like.

SuChin Pak  07:03

Wallets, he was like that’s that’s too personal a purchase. I mean that those words haunt me. To this day.

Santa Paul Scheer  07:11

I feel like you want, maybe this is an oversimplification, but I believe that for Christmas, the magic of Christmas is recreating that feeling that you got when you were a kid and you opened up a toy, right? You want that right? Yes, there are great things out there that you really probably need. But you want that toy? What is that toy? What is that adult toy?

Kulap Vilaysack  07:34

Okay, so it’s not that it’s not Socks.

Santa Paul Scheer  07:37

Now socks, it’s not socks. And look, I believe in the idea of you can throw in a practical, you can definitely throw in a practical, but let’s not make it all practical. Let’s not make it because we’re going to forget about that practical, we need something to play with something to occupy us whether that’s programming something whether that is just in the mix, looking we need tactile sensation that we’re not going to get when a shirt, a tie a belt. And I know that’s a very traditional way of looking at things, and look, you can buy expensive stuff, but we want that we need something something that we wouldn’t buy for ourselves. Even if we don’t use it for much longer, after Christmas, we need it for the moment. It’s like Heidi Klum. Dress for that Halloween party. Don’t worry about how you’re gonna get the paint off. It’s only for that one shot and you do it and you’ll leave like and that’s what I want Christmas to be. All in, that’s my theory.

SuChin Pak  08:38

I love it. I live in that theory, but what if you’re living with someone who is more of a practical holiday approach or I don’t want to say Grinch I don’t want to say Grinch because I say that under my breath in private. I don’t need to say it in public.

Kulap Vilaysack  08:55

But guys.

SuChin Pak  08:56

I love, I’m with you, Paul. I want Christmas morning. I want people’s panties to fall off. You know I want them to be like you. You tired dead person,g ot this amazing life thrilling thing last year we got I got I got my husband. I don’t even know what it’s called. You sit on it, and then like you control it.

Santa Paul Scheer  09:29

With like a little but boogie board right? Like I’ve seen that.

SuChin Pak  09:32

It’s like a triangle. You put your feet straight out. Yeah, it’s like a tricycle go kart.

Santa Paul Scheer  09:37

I love it.

Kulap Vilaysack  09:38

That’s great.

SuChin Pak  09:38

Everybody took turns on it. My 80 year old father […] that came out, people were laughing people were falling off of it. Things were happening.

Santa Paul Scheer  09:49

Now look, I’m gonna say this. I want to say this honestly, too. I believe that my rule is more for men, and not necessarily for women, like when I get things for June, I do my fun stuff, which seems to be under appreciated by her in the stocking, and.

SuChin Pak  10:08

That is a great rule, because you’re right. You’re right, generally women don’t want fun stuff. I do not want things off script. You’re absolutely right.

Santa Paul Scheer  10:17

The stocking is where it lives, and I’ll tell you one thing that I got June, last year, that was one of those stocking things, and she got obsessed with it. It was something that I saw one of the Kardashians promoting on Instagram, and it was basically it was like a headband that was attached to a rubber ball. And you could box it was like a boxer ball or something like that. I bought a bunch of these dumb balls. To your point, just like that everyone put these dumb headbands on and are boxing this ball. Do we use it much past the the new year? No, but that’s okay, because that day everyone’s like, I’m gonna try it. I’m gonna try it, and you know, we’re all you know. And June like that, that was but that was that the stocking stuff. That’s where I live.

SuChin Pak  10:58

That’s where the whimsy is for you.

Kulap Vilaysack  11:03

Let’s get into your cart. I’m so excited.

Santa Paul Scheer  11:05

Okay, so I will say this that I think a lot of the things that I mentioned last year still hold true to this year. So you can listen, there’s a lot of things that I didn’t go back to because I was like, you know what they are, for the most part available to you this year as well. They are big go back to that, go back to that well, so I wanted to make sure that those.

SuChin Pak  11:25

Yeah, all this you did a whole stocking stuffers. You did a whole thing, that I went down the rabbit hole and.

Santa Paul Scheer  11:25

Yeah, so there’s a lot. I gave you all a bunch of different things. You tell me where you want to start and I will dive in?

Kulap Vilaysack  11:39

Well, speaking of diving in, Paul, one of my only friends who actually got a cold plunge.

Santa Paul Scheer  11:45

Yes.

Kulap Vilaysack  11:46

Talk about it.

Santa Paul Scheer  11:46

Yes, okay, here’s what I’ll say. There is nothing more upsetting than listen to somebody talk about their cold plunge. So if this is going to bother you, I want to give you a moment to you can fast forward, but if you would like let me chat to you about it for a second. I’m going to tell you, it’s going to change your motherfucking life. This thing is the best. I’ve been doing it since March, every single day that I am home. I am doing the cold punch. If I get sick, I’m going in that cold punch. I get better, quicker. Here’s another thing, I have found. This is unscientific, but kind of scientific. I had to get a blood test before I had gotten the cold punch not because I got a cold plunge just because we were checking out something I took one three months after I got it. Metabolism boom, boosts inflammation down, right, things had changed. And my doctor was like, what are you doing? cold plunge. And he said, I also do a cold plunge practice as well. And he goes, I find it to be incredibly important in the health benefits are true and real. And here is the thing. You watch these videos online, these people go on the call, it’s 32 degrees, I’m in like cold punch, fuck it, you don’t need it. 59 and below, and three minutes, you could do a colder, but 15 and below, and three minutes and Kulap, we all know we actually all know Steve Harvey does it as well, because when we were on Family Feud, that’s where Steve and I connected on a cold plunge.

Kulap Vilaysack  13:22

Yep, yep, yep, and being bald and being bald.

Santa Paul Scheer  13:25

I mean, and and I will tell you this much. Steve Harvey carries himself like a man who does not recognize or want to recognize that he’s bald and I appreciate that where I embrace it more I embrace the fact that yes, this is happening Steve. I think if you said you know Steve, you’re bald he would back what? So I will tell you a little bit about these cold punches there are look I don’t know if you if you got these beaucoup bucks go get yourself one of these beautiful cold plunges they are I mean get something called the plunge which is great. I opted to go for the cryo spring cold plunge because of a couple of reasons. One, I wasn’t sure that this was going to take, and I was like I’m not spending a shitload of money on something that I’m not confident in. Cryo spring is a portable, cold plunge ice bath you blow it up, right? It can deflate it inflates. It is small and it’s a tub it’s not like a pickle barrel which they also have. I love the customer service here. I think it is perfect entry level item it goes from these plunges that sometimes can cost nine to $12,000. 9 to 12,000 this cryo spring I think you can get for like 4000, you know that that’s not It’s not nothing no, no, no, but I’m talking about in the grand scheme of what these cold plunges are going for, 12,000 and really the thing that is making it so expensive, is the chiller because I got a chiller a chiller is a lot of people think oh, cold plunge, I’m not gonna go get ice everyday nor should you. You don’t need to get ice because you got a chiller. The chiller is basically like this little mini water cooler that you attach to your cold punch that circulates, cleans and chills your water, so I have it on my I have an app, I set it, so every morning at 6am it starts chilling up. So by the time I’m up, I’m able to get in it and go, so it’s ready to go. So so that way you don’t have to get isolated people. I forget when I talked about this, no, there’s no ice involved. If you just want to get the bullet tub, you could put your own ice in it. But who wants to go to the store every day and get a bunch of ice?  I know, I know some people who live in like the Midwest.

Santa Paul Scheer  13:34

They’re just, they’re just going outside there. They yeah, they’re in a cowboy job.

Santa Paul Scheer  14:18

And what a lot of people do in the Midwest is they have one of these outside. And you can get like a horse trough as well, which is I think even cheaper, and they let it get cold, and in the morning, they take a little mallet and a hammer and they break the ice in and then you get in that there’s three ways to do it. If you’re going to do it that like if you live in cold weather climate, and you want to try it out, get yourself a horse trough. It’s not going to be a great Christmas gift. But it will you know.

SuChin Pak  16:02

You have to really explain it. Yeah, hopefully you’re getting it for someone who really wants the horse trough understands what it’s for.

Santa Paul Scheer  16:10

I still think you got to get the children. Yeah, you gotta like you gotta show more than a horse. But I like this cyro spring one is an introduction, and if you have somebody in your life and you have a lot of money, the plunge and the RENU therapy, cold plunch are their aspirational.

SuChin Pak  16:26

The cryo spring that you’ve brought here. It’s portable.

Santa Paul Scheer  16:29

Yes, you can put it in a backpack.

SuChin Pak  16:30

Yeah, that’s kind of I mean, it that’s, that’s amazing. I mean, that’s a huge. It’s self cleaning on site. It’s easy to set up and then it also can be a hot tub.

Kulap Vilaysack  16:44

This Paul you’ve never brought up you’ve never brought up that it could be a hot tub.

Santa Paul Scheer  16:48

Yes, it can be a hot tub. If you get the correct chiller there’s there’s different types of chillers one that just does it cold one just says hot and cold. But yes, it works the same exxactly. It can be your own portable hot tub, you jack that temperature to whatever you want. And you know what, I don’t sell that part of it. And you’re right, I should probably get behind that part of it because that is it for that. I don’t use it for that, but I should and I could and I can and I will.

SuChin Pak  17:19

In fact, he’s gonna bring it over to your house Ku, is he’s just gonna set it up from his backpack. He’s gonna ebike over there and chill, literally.

Santa Paul Scheer  17:29

I mean, if we want to go into like Zooks Cubes with Paul’s plunges. I mean I can I can give you a whole way of cleaning it and getting the water out and maintenance and all that sort of stuff. It’s like there’s a whole I don’t want to get lost in the sauce on this but I will say that. One of the things I really love about that tub is it’s portable. I’m not deflating it, putting it in a backpack. I’ve never done that, but the fact that I can put it I could put it outdoors indoors I could put it wherever I want.

Kulap Vilaysack  17:53

Let’s move on you are bringing us a suitcase.

Santa Paul Scheer  17:57

Okay, so I love this suitcase. I’ve experimented with a lot of different suitcases in my time. This is the soul guard and the soul guard is this interesting suitcase that basically has a dresser in it they call it a carry on closet. So if you extend the handle the correct way. You actually are you have an open closet. You can also take with the shirt off, and then put that into somebody’s closet. I do that when I go on tour. I just figured it out one and hang it and I have my closet right there.

Kulap Vilaysack  18:30

So you don’t have to unpack which of course I on record I have to unpack when I get to any place.

Santa Paul Scheer  18:35

Well I also like this it’s all compact. You don’t have to worry about five different cubes it’s all in one and I love the idea of putting on the closet now this is one of those gifts that I’m airing more on practical will people be excited about this. I think they will be excited about this because of this new technology on claws yet the technology and

Kulap Vilaysack  18:52

You can be very silly about just the contents of what inside just as a gift. You could do some fun stuff inside.

Santa Paul Scheer  19:00

Oh I like this cool. I like the idea of like pre packing it. Now that’s a gift. I’m in I’m all in on this bag. I like how it charges. I like how it rolls. I like that it doesn’t have a zipper it has clasps. So if you pack it too heavy, you just sit on it and boom you lock it in like it’s not you know because we all are fighting the zippers. It’s a hardshell case. Great wheels. Great company. I’m a big, big, big big fan.

Santa Paul Scheer  19:38

I want to talk about this Evergoods bag that has changed my life.

Kulap Vilaysack  19:42

Evergoods, now we’ve heard about ever goods from Zooks Cubes but not this specific transit duffel.

Santa Paul Scheer  19:49

All right, this is the transit duffel 35 litre bag. It is the best hands down duffel bag I have ever used in my life because it’s exactly what I want a duffel to be duffels the idea of a duffel. I love it. I love the idea of a duffel like I don’t need to bring a big suitcase, but I need to definitely be able to carry some shoes and do some other stuff. This is built with the right dimensions I love Evergoods already. I love this bag so much. I bought a different color. I have a black one and a green one, depending on the mood depending on the mood. It has easy access ports on the left and right hand side so you can get your computer you can use it as basically the one bag that you bring, like if you’re going on a quick little trip, you don’t wanna bring a backpack, you don’t want to bring a bag. This is it, you can put your Zukes cubes in there. It actually still is something you can carry like a like a briefcase or you put it around your shoulder for something a little bit better. Like if you look at the website, if you go to Evergoods and you look at the website, there’s so much room it’s a square bottom like a rectangular bottom. You can get so much in there it is a fat duffel that is truly.

SuChin Pak  20:59

But it’s not bulky at all.

Santa Paul Scheer  21:00

Not bulky. It’s not bulky, it’s perfect, and I will say this what I love about Evergoods and is like a little nerdy thing is they have this like little it’s like one side of Velcro on every one of their bags. If you go searching around Amazon, you can find like little fun velcro things to stick to it like like right now I have one on my bag right here that says Nakatomi Plaza on it like says Nakatomi Plaza security, right so like it’s a great little you know, 100 percent, or I can or I can like I can slap on like, you know the the ship from Alien, whatever it is you can find these little tags and you can dress up these bags.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:35

Okay, great. Let’s keep going with Titans of Cult Steelbook blu-ray.

Santa Paul Scheer  21:40

Yes, okay, this is last year. I think I gave you some other places to get some fun blu rays. And this is what I wanted to do this year. I wanted to just open your mind to if you ask somebody we’re like yeah, that likes a nice DVD set of some sort of age.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:59

Do you have? I don’t already under my bed? I said yes.

Santa Paul Scheer  22:03

I know. I heard it like and it’s like so Titans of Cult does these amazing steel books. Steel book blue and I and instead of saying like, well, here’s one, great one, you have to pick what you want. Like there’s a great space jam one that comes with stickers and it’s really well done, they have a Star Trek one, they have a 2001 Space Odyssey they have The Thing. The John Carpenter movie, they do high quality revamped versions of classic movies. So whatever your taste is, if it is like Clockwork Orange, if it is Star Trek, if it’s The matrix, they have these great beautiful looking often with like cool merch inside like Scott Pilgrim comes with a like this like little disk inside of it like a like a like a pin. You know, so there’s a lot of really cool things in here. So that’s just like go Google Titans of Cult and you’ll see the amazing work that they do on classic great movies just and then whatever your whatever you’re into. They might have it.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:01

All right. I love that. Okay, SuChin Pak, Paul has brought us a new I believe new to us massager.

SuChin Pak  23:08

Oh boy. Wait, how many Paul just off the top of your head. I know it’s hard. I wouldn’t be able to actually give you an exact number. But how many massage items both manual plugin Babak. Do you think you own.

Santa Paul Scheer  23:25

This one I’ll say a lot. But can I tell you another thing going back to the cold plunge. I don’t use them anymore that much.

SuChin Pak  23:33

So it’s saving you money. This cold plunge is working for you.

Santa Paul Scheer  23:37

It is, I don’t get massages as much I don’t, and as much as I like all these things. I just find my body to be in a different state of relaxation. I’m not pulling muscles the way I used to. But I will say that the one that is unbeatable as always is the theragun that is my go to I love the theragun, I got the theraroller. Now the theraroller is like the idea of the theragun but it’s in a roller form and I always found it to be fine. I didn’t love it, and then they saw this chirp RPM rolling percussive massager. Now what this is is essentially a roller with two handles on either side. It has and you can move it all around your body like you would right but it’s rolling for you. Or you pop it in the base. And I can like lay on the floor and just have this workout my calf I can have it working out my feet. It just is whatever they can so if you put it on the base, it goes automatically if I put it on my body, I have a button that controls it going on and off. And so you know think of it as a giant rolling pin that you can either activate by the touch of a button or you can put on a bass and it activates for you and I will say that the best thing that this does is works out those parts of my body that I really can’t get like for me. It is always Mike Half and like just sitting on this just putting us under my calf. In a you’re watching TV don’t do anything, it will work out. It will fix issues. no time flat. I love this thing.

SuChin Pak  25:12

Can you put your feet on it?

Santa Paul Scheer  25:15

Your feet, the bottoms of your feet, you do everything on it, it goes everywhere.

SuChin Pak  25:19

So guy is for those that obviously just started listening. It rolls itself but it looks like almost like beads, but they’re like knobs, right? That give you that. You know what I mean? Extra it’s not just like a flat surface. So we’ll get into all the nooks and crannies the fascia.

Santa Paul Scheer  25:40

It’s worth checking out if you’re a person that either runs if your hamstrings, feet, calves, thighs, quads, arms, shoulders, back it and glutes. That’s the other thing. I don’t like doing those exercises as it and glute ones. Like it’s hard for me to go on a roller but this, like it almost helps me get it and I can’t really do that with the theragun besides is just pounding into it. This really gives me that yeah, gets in gets in deep. It’s great.

Kulap Vilaysack  26:06

This is good, it’s good. Last year, you brought us the backbone. This year, it’s the PS five portal.

Santa Paul Scheer  26:17

Yes. So this is something that I’ve been dying for. Because I like the backbone I talked about this last year, the backbone is a great idea. You put your phone in it, you can play your games, you know, whatever system, you have your Steam games, you can play your PlayStation games, this is basically the same concept as a backbone, but you don’t have to put your phone in it. And that was really the issue that I always had with the backbone. It’s like, I gotta take my phone out of a case, you got to put it into another thing that I’m putting in here. And then I’m here like, it just felt cumbersome. This is an all in one, PlayStation portal remote player, for the PS5, it has a screen attached to it, you can play all of your PS5 games, as long as you are connected to Wi Fi. And it’s a recreation of the PS5 controller now as a parent, I find it very hard for me to say to my wife, I’m going to go downstairs and play video games. But but there are many times when my wife is completely asleep next to me in the bed. And I want to be next to my wife because I love my wife. And I’m like, but I also would like to play some NBA 2k. This is the way that I’m gonna be able to do this. This is great for parents who have that need for video games, but also want to be in the same room as their spouse, because June is not gonna sit in any room where I’m playing. So this is great. I know that there’s been some issues as far as like, where you can travel with it. Like in a hotel and stuff. You have to be connected to Wi Fi. I haven’t been able to speak to that, but if you’re in your home and you want to be like able to play your games and just in a different room.

SuChin Pak  27:42

Or quietly in the dark while your wife sleeps next.

Santa Paul Scheer  27:45

Yeah, or as you putting down your kids, I know that’s a very specific thing to say. I can’t play the video game machine that’s in my living room. But, but I think a lot of people can identify with that. I will tell you, you know you’re sick at home. You have all the time in the world play some video games. You’re chillin, chillin room.

SuChin Pak  28:03

You chillin? You got three minutes, three minutes on this.

Santa Paul Scheer  28:06

So I like this. It’s just for the PlayStation five. But I think it’s gonna be a game changer. And I think that this is it’s brand new on the market. And for a reasonable price. It’s less than $200.

SuChin Pak  28:18

If Christmas came around and you got this under the tree and you opened it, you’d be psyched.

Santa Paul Scheer  28:24

I’d be psyched, this is cool. I don’t know if I would buy this for myself. I don’t know if I would be like this is the one number one thing but if someone thought like this is a perfect gift for like it’s a nice acknowledgement like June knows that I like to play video games with the kids and we have a great time but like this is kind of saying like I get it I see you go play your games away from me.

SuChin Pak  28:45

Cool, I think you can you can give a you know just a friendly friendly text a girlfriend text to someone that may want to know about this.

Santa Paul Scheer  28:53

Yeah, well you know, she will not she will know she won’t do that for me and that’s okay. I’m I’m actually not going to bring anything into the house like that. But at any point Kulap if you have anything that you’d like to tell me about June, let me know and I rely on the kindness of of all my friends for that.

Kulap Vilaysack  29:13

Alright, let’s talk about this book, Smuggler’s Cove Exotic Cocktails, Rum and The Cult of Tiki by Martin and Rebecca.

Santa Paul Scheer  29:19

So this is something again, this is I’m trying to go in different directions here. There’s a bunch of great books out I wanted to use this as a jumping off point. So if you have someone in your life who likes to make tiki drinks or likes to make drinks, or has a home bar does anything like this again, I’m trying to think out of the box a little bit. And this is like the right way to do tiki drinks. This is like made by these two people who founded smuggler’s Cove, which is like the best Tiki Bar in the country. I’ve drank there, and when I drink, there’s like, oh, that’s like a tiki drink. And I feel like I didn’t know a lot of people like to buy these Tiki cups and do all this sort of stuff. It’s like a fun book that you wouldn’t have yeah don’t need to book in the bar but this is like if you have somebody who likes to make concoctions this is a good concoction book.

Kulap Vilaysack  30:06

And take a page from SuChin Pak. Why not pair this with two Tiki glasses or some rum?

Santa Paul Scheer  30:15

Yes you do the whole thing yeah put together, do a whole kit. That’s a great and see that you guys are helping me go to the next level do the kit. You can even get a blender, a little mixer, you can do the whole thing. But this is like a good book, and it’s a good book, especially if you have somebody in your life who makes drinks that you like to drink because they’ll make you really good drinks. This is not just getting like a Jimmy Buffett Margarita machine. I will also just say if we’re talking about books very briefly, highly recommend Reggie Watts his book as a great stocking stuffer, highly recommend the brand new Alan Partridge book. Alan Partridge is a character comedy characters played by Steve Coogan for decades. And one of the funny, it’s so so funny. He’s got podcasts, he’s got books, he has a brand new book called Big Beacon, which is fantastic, just really, really solid. And I also want to give a shout out to Danny Pellegrino, who, as a Christmas book, it’s all like Christmas stories, Christmas short stories, you know. So there’s a couple of like good books that are out right now that I’m like, I’ve earmarked or I’ve read, or I’ve gotten into this is just kind of like some side books. By the way, I’ll be releasing my book in May.

Kulap Vilaysack  31:26

Oh, I know. I know. I’m really excited. I’m so excited for that.

Santa Paul Scheer  31:30

Apparently available for pre order. I didn’t even know it yet. Because the covers not even been released. I don’t even know if I’m supposed to be talking about it. But I am because I feel like at any point people should be buying it. It’s a talk to a librarian. She said it’s the right price for a hardcover and there’s going to be an audible book and it’s called joyful recollections of trauma but you can’t get that now.

Kulap Vilaysack  31:50

No, but you could probably preorder we are.

Santa Paul Scheer  31:52

You can pre order. pre order whenever.

Kulap Vilaysack  31:54

It’s up on Add to Cart, Add to Cart pod we’re already promoting.

Santa Paul Scheer  31:59

Oh, look at this. I love it. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

Kulap Vilaysack  32:02

Let’s talk about merch bar. What is it? You say? It’s for vinyl, but it’s band merch? No.

Santa Paul Scheer  32:08

I’ll tell you. I like merch bar because it’s not just a band stuff. It does have a lot of band stuff. But it also just has a lot of great vinyl like so. Like if you like you know like Su, I know you’re into Megadeth right you can get you can get 180 gram Megadeth Ruston panic. Yeah, you can get that. But they have they actually have some really great old school like everything from like, you know, from Nirvana to Banda horses to Neutral Milk Hotel. Again, this is something that was like, go to merch bar. Check out what they have. They have great limited edition or high quality vinyl things. And this is again for the person you’re like, I’m not gonna tell you. Oh, you have to get the Cocteau Twins, or the Yeah, yeah, yes. Go find what your person likes. And this is going to be something that is an elevated version of vinyl like, oh, I didn’t I couldn’t get that anywhere else. I didn’t even know they made that. That’s a special.

Kulap Vilaysack  33:01

This is very good. Paul. This is uh, this is a game changer. Yeah, very good, Paul.

Santa Paul Scheer  33:05

Yeah, so that’s to me why I’m, I’m kind of trying to drive you to a couple sites that might have some things that are a little bit a little bit different.

Kulap Vilaysack  33:12

Yeah, well, that I yes, very much appreciate that. Let’s talk about this cool camera, the Kodak PIXPRO WP Z to rugged Waterproof Shockproof dustproof Wi Fi digital camera.

Santa Paul Scheer  33:24

So what I really have gotten into lately is just having like a more portable camera experience on this one. This is a digital one. But it’s I like having a digital camera because again, it’s off your phone, you could leave your phone behind, you can run around with a little camera, this one goes in the water, I love going in the water and taking photos in the water, and you can’t take your phone in the water. So this is a plus for that. And Kodak is at the forefront of film cameras. They make a lot of cheap, inexpensive film cameras that you can just take with you throw in your bag, I have multiple film cameras here in my house that I just develop every couple of months. And I have like three or four months of different pictures on it. And they always come out great, you can get them develop digitally. They’re great, so I’m a big fan of going back to the camera even though your iPhone, or your Google pic or whatever you have is going to be great quality and everything. I think when you leave your phone behind and just have a camera or you just go and have fun with the camera, you’re gonna get better pictures and you’re not worrying about like an Instagram moment. You’re just kind of grabbing moments. There’s a brand new app. I don’t know if you guys are on this app, but I’m on it and I love it. I’m trying to find people to get on it’s called lapse, but lapse is the same idea. It’s like back in the day. We were having fun. We took pictures on our cameras. We don’t know what they look like we’re not trying to find the perfect picture. We just grab it. And then a month later we find out what it is. And this kind of rugged, waterproof, like Wi Fi one is the perfect mix between both worlds.

SuChin Pak  34:46

I love this because also especially if you have kids, it’s a totally different experience.

Kulap Vilaysack  35:05

Thinking of a lifestyle, you’ve got something for bloggers. Belkin Face Yakking Phone Mount.

Santa Paul Scheer  35:10

I love this. This is my blogger moment here, everyone’s getting everyone’s creating content, everyone’s doing their five minute videos or tiktoks, I this is a very simple thing. It basically is a mount for your phone that tracks your movement. So you can also use this, if you are in the kitchen, you’re talking to somebody on FaceTime, you move around the kitchen that does it. It’s like the Amazon Echo, or, you know, whatever that is, it just follows you and, but I often find like, if I’m trying to tape something, or do something, even if I’m on a zoom conference, it’s gonna move with me, it’s following me, right? So this is for your blogger, this is for your person who you are talking to it just, it allows you the freedom of not having to reset the camera every two seconds, especially if you’re making content. And I know I’m talking to content creators. So I just want to say that, you know, it’s a, it’s a nice thing to have. And they also have a version of this, that you can set up for kids sports games that you can mount, and it follows your kids sports games and.

Kulap Vilaysack  36:07

That’s good for my nephew. Yes, that’s very good.

Santa Paul Scheer  36:12

Yeah, so I haven’t done the full lot of research on which is the best. There’s, again, very expensive ones of that. But you can have basically mounted on a tripod, and it will follow everything around. But this thing is really I like the simplicity of this, and, you know, again, get your hands free for your Tiktok dances, you don’t have to like line it up on a bunch of books and things like that, you know, this is gonna be great. I also am going to recommend that for these actors out there, myself included. You know, when you want to put yourself on tape for an audition like this will move with you. If you move a little bit, it’s good. If you don’t have somebody to put you on tape, it’s going to capture you give you like, give you a little bit more flexibility to be a little bit more fluid.

SuChin Pak  36:50

Paul, your middle name is elevated [..] come in, you’re like I see what you’re doing. Let me just tweak it. Let me just make it a little better. And this is all this is.

Santa Paul Scheer  37:04

Again, I’m trying to I’m trying to give us some things that are more practical, less practical, but this is what I once got an amazing gift from my sister in law Deanna it allowed you to create a Steadicam effect on your phone. It’s a little holder and it it has been for me. It was the best one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten because it just hit me where I was like, I love this. This is great. I would never even bought this for myself. It was a perfect, perfect gift for me.

Kulap Vilaysack  37:30

Okay, so games Dutch Blitz, the original fast paced card game.

Santa Paul Scheer  37:34

It is taken over my family. It’s a fast paced card game, if I try to explain it will be here for longer than how I talked about cold plunges. But I’ll say this. It is fun, trust me, it’s fun. It will take a beat to learn. But there are video tutorials. It is basically like competitive Solitaire is maybe the easiest way to describe it. But it’s just a fun family game, you can get an expansion pack that actually allows more people to play it. But it’s a great holiday game. And I’m a big believer in giving these in the stocking. Because that night you need something to do. But learn this game. Now if you want to, like you know, gild the lily, you learn it before, so you can explain it to everybody else. And you get it out there. But it’s a game you give to somebody and they can go for it.

SuChin Pak  38:20

The kids, how young how young because I love card games.

Santa Paul Scheer  38:25

I think you gotta have at least like it says eight and up and I find that to be fair, it goes quick. It goes you know, it’s very, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. But you know, I have to always tell Jean like we’re playing against kids, you have to like slow it down a little bit. She is she doesn’t allow that.

Kulap Vilaysack  38:39

She’s very competitive, very competitive.

Santa Paul Scheer  38:43

When the games come out.

Santa Paul Scheer  38:43

Why I like this. You can monogram your own Scrabble. So you could put a name on your Scrabble board for those who like it. And I think that like this isn’t you know, for me, I’m a I like a Scrabble game. But if you put your my name on it, June grave, it, put a plaque on it. I’m going to put that out. It looks great. It’s llbean It looks nice. It’s a nice looking board. The top comes off, it’s all easy peasy. I just think it’s a nice, it looks it will look nice out. But it also is like personalized. I think again, we’re going to somebody who likes Scrabble, you put your name on it. You do it up good. I think that this is a very nice, easy gift and it’s not like checkers or chess, but you won’t play I think more people are gonna like sit and play a game a game of Scrabble. And it’s LL Bean.

Kulap Vilaysack  38:43

I mean, talking about elevating something that you already know, the LL BeanDeluxe scrabble set.

Kulap Vilaysack  39:35

Oh, LL Bean, and I mean, you know, you had you recommended the slippers one year and that was a hit for Scott.

Santa Paul Scheer  39:43

I mean, can I tell you the thing that I recommend now, I mean, in LL Bean, I’ve gotten deep into LL Bean, is they have a blanket that has redefined our home. We got three of them because we liked them.

SuChin Pak  39:56

So what is it that I’m searching it right now? What is it.

Santa Paul Scheer  39:59

I believe It is called the wicked plush throw. I’m pretty sure it’s that’s what it is. I will double check to make sure but they have this blanket that is so warm so snuggly and you got to get the biggest version that they have. It has become every family member fights over this my kids my wife everybody. It’s not too hot. It’s just like the comfiest coziest blanket you will ever have.

Kulap Vilaysack  40:24

All right, sold so mean LL Bean, you know LL Bean classic. Now this stocking stuffer is uh Paul Scheer. This is Paul Scheer, it is the pop Key Tag executive producer Dick Wolf. What is it?

Santa Paul Scheer  40:37

Yes. So basically it’s a little it’s a little and this a great stocking stuffer. It is just for the lawn order fan in your life. It is a keychain that says executive producer Dick Wolf, and then I believe it you know, it has like different show titles on the back of them. But they’re basically like Law and Order key tags. Like they’re like, they look like old school motel room keys, like when they you know, it’s like it’s like big plastic. They have like a sachet away, one, two Shantae eustatius. sashay away. Like they’re just little silly, fun tags. I have one that is Peltzer inventions, which is from gremlins. You can find these like little fun, pop key tags and they’re great.

SuChin Pak  41:18

Also this site by the way I’ve never heard.

Santa Paul Scheer  41:21

Oh, it’s great. Yeah.

SuChin Pak  41:22

Amazing.

Santa Paul Scheer  41:23

Great stuff.

SuChin Pak  41:24

I cannot wait to dive so hard into this.

Santa Paul Scheer  41:27

Great ornaments, Snoop Dogg felt ornaments. They got caviar ornaments, they got golden girl statues, nacho cheese, Doritos statues. It’s a good little site, and they got a lot of Hanukkah stuff in there too. And now, I have been like, we play pickleball and I have mixed feelings about pickleball in the sense that. Here’s what I’ll say. I like playing pickleball I like the culture of pickleball. I don’t like watching pickleball. So I’m not I’m not. I’m talking to you right now as a person who’s like, hey, I want to play. I want to have good time with my friends. I think it’s a social gathering. And I want to look good while I’m doing it. And this website or this clothing company called PSundays it should be like Sundays with a P It’s PSundays, and they have great looking pickleball closer, it’s just pickleball apparel. They got hoodies, jackets, polos. I love the way it looks. It’s elevated fashion from like skirts, to leggings to sweatshirts. They also have rackets and things like that, which are great, but they have the I love the design. It’s it’s a little like a rainbow flag with a P and an S. The stuff looks great, and I can tell you as somebody who was worn this stuff, it is great. So you have somebody in your life and again, I said no clothes. I feel like this jumps a level because it’s pickleball clothes. It’s different.

SuChin Pak  42:47

It’s like oh, no, this is very fashion. This is very young millennial, this is Pickleball for someone you know what I mean, that maybe doesn’t live in a retirement home, which is a lot of pickelball folks nowadays. So this is like.

Santa Paul Scheer  43:01

It looks good.

SuChin Pak  43:02

Yeah, they’re beautiful.

Santa Paul Scheer  43:04

They’re really are it’s nice, and it’s like not overtly comical. It’s like, I feel like a lot of pickleball stuff I look at is like it’s like pickleball or it’s like, you know, it’s or it’s you know, it’s like dink me once, shame on you, whatever. You know, it’s not there’s no jokes here. Right, I think. And I appreciate that, like one of the shirts I love so much is just the score. It just 002 I love it. It’s great.

Kulap Vilaysack  43:27

Amazing, so I think the last thing here is something that I’m really excited about. It’s it comes to us from Etsy. It’s a movie marquee mylar last.

Santa Paul Scheer  43:39

Yes. I mean.

Kulap Vilaysack  43:40

Okay, this is genius. Paul, what is this?

Santa Paul Scheer  43:43

This is aspirational. I don’t even have this a friend of mine has it and I love it so much. So basically, what this is, is if you grew up, and you are in your, you know, late 30s, early 40s You probably remember going to a movie theater and seeing like this thing hanging up in the lobby, where it tells you where to go, right. It’s like okay, you know, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is playing down here, Top Guns playing down here. Whatever it is, you it’s the old school, vinyl movie marquee. So you get this lightbox you can hang it on your wall. And then they make these little mylar inserts so you can get your favorite movies, you can find pretty much everything they make new ones and old ones. If you have a home theater, it’s perfect for that. But if you just are a fan of old school pop culture shit, it’s great because you can also like, it’s like you can hang it up on your wall. It’s a piece of art because each one of these mylar strips. Again, there’s a whole world of people who deal in these mylar movie strips. You can find classic ones. You can find people that will make new ones for you. You can do whatever you want. So I love these light boxes. There’s a million of these light boxes. If you look on Etsy, it’s one of those things I’ve been really wanting to get. It’s really cool and just it’s like an old throwback, but I just love I just love it. It reminds me of my childhood of going to see movies.

Kulap Vilaysack  44:59

Yeah, this is pretty good. This is pretty great for Scotty I gotta figure I guess it’s good. It’s gonna be figuring out what movies.

Santa Paul Scheer  45:06

Well here’s the thing, right? You can also get and this is where if you just type in, because there’s a lot of them right if you type a mylar movie poster, you can see that there’s a single one there’s four there’s six there’s they can get them in any kind of a thing. You know you could do for for Scott is you could get one made for his movie for.

Kulap Vilaysack  45:26

Between Two Ferns. Yeah, yeah. So maybe I do that I do all the Fast and Furious is and then.

Santa Paul Scheer  45:33

You could do all that. Right? Yeah, and then that’s it mean, like, yeah, you know. So there are people who make them and you’ll find tons of them online. Tons of them and they’re all cheap. They’re really really great and they’re just fun I just love them. Like they like this one is like there’s 300 ones to choose from you just pick what you want, it’s.

Kulap Vilaysack  45:53

This is why I wait for Paul Scheer, these are the stuff I’m not going to come up with.

Santa Paul Scheer  45:58

By the way. And I’ll say this, the one is is equally cool too, like the like you can get one there’s so many versions of this. It’s just a light up box. So people are ready to go and anyway whenever you want and this is one that I want. But I have not like pulled the trigger on.

Kulap Vilaysack  46:13

I know exactly where it could go to Paul, thank you so much. It’s going to be a Holly Jolly Christmas indeed. If you want to keep the spirit going with Mr. Paul Scheer, check out his podcast How Did This Get Made which he hosts with Zooks cubes with the lady June Diane Raphael. He has another podcast Unspooled with Amy Nicholson he hosts a show on Twitch called Friendzone with Rob Cubile.

Santa Paul Scheer  46:39

You’ll find, me you’ll finally like I’m here if you do anything buy that book because I want to knock like Deepak Chopra off the New York Times best seller.

Kulap Vilaysack  46:47

Is Colin […]

SuChin Pak  46:51

He’s had enough he’s had enough time.

Santa Paul Scheer  46:53

You know he’s he’s been on there for too long. I will say this this is a pleasure. I hope I did right by you. I tried to you know look, I think you combine what I said last year a lot of things last year hold true to this year. Everything still is out there. There’s some different specifics. But those gifts still hold up.

SuChin Pak  47:09

I would argue if you’re still confused if there’s still things on the list that you that you don’t know yet. Listen to all all of the episodes together and knock out every single person on your list big and small.

Santa Paul Scheer  47:23

Get in there get in there. All right, well, that is you know, look, I appreciate being here. I can’t wait to be back.

Kulap Vilaysack  47:29

Thank you Paul.

SuChin Pak  47:30

Thank you Paul.
