SPEAKERS

SuChin Pak, Dan Ahdoot, Samantha Bee, Kulap Vilaysack

SuChin Pak  00:21

All right Carter’s. Welcome back to Add To Cart, now this is the show, all about the things we buy and the things we buy into and what it says about who we are as a people. I’m SuChin Pak.

Kulap Vilaysack  01:42

And I’m Kulap Vilaysack. Su, Su, Su. Would you say adding to cart is a coping mechanism?

SuChin Pak  01:49

I mean, currently the only coping mechanism in my life, I would say right, like, what other ways do I have to cope other than add to cart?

Kulap Vilaysack  02:00

And well I ask, because today we are bringing on a very good friend of mine who has a new book coming out all about a lifelong obsession and coping mechanism. I met him when he was the star of bajillion dollar properties. You may know him from the Netflix series Cobra Kai or as falafel Phil from kicking it. Or maybe you’ve had this distinct pleasure of seeing him at a comedy club near you. He is the host of the wildly delicious podcast Green Eggs and Dan, please add to cart, Dan Ahdoot.

Dan Ahdoot  02:34

Thank you so much. I just want to say when you brought up Bajillion Dollar Properties, you are the creator of Bajillion Dollar Properties.

Dan Ahdoot  02:42

Correct.

Dan Ahdoot  02:43

You didn’t say he was one of the stars. You said he’s the star.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:48

I said.

SuChin Pak  02:49

Sorry, after all that tape you did say the star.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:52

I didn’t say that star.

Dan Ahdoot  02:54

You said the star.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:55

I said the star. I met him when he was the star of Bajillion Dollar Properties.

Dan Ahdoot  03:01

I am the star.

SuChin Pak  03:04

I, I think you are the star. But hey, I’m just I’m just a small viewing. You know, please I know I’m not creating things you know.

Dan Ahdoot  03:14

I mean, look, I know that most people see me as the star but I did not know that the creator of the show saw me as the star of the show.

SuChin Pak  03:22

Don’t tell the other stars she calls everyone the star do not do that. Dan, keep it here.

Kulap Vilaysack  03:29

Be cool then.

Dan Ahdoot  03:32

Yes, yes, yes, yes. Yes. Yes.

Kulap Vilaysack  03:37

Do I want to know your style? How do you sir how do you add to cart? Are you just like you know what? Let me throw it in throw it in the cart. Let me hit let me pay for it. Are you laboring over each option?

Dan Ahdoot  03:51

I don’t labor too long. I’m usually a pretty impulse. It goes in the cart and I buy it, I do not I don’t really have like, I rarely have a cart that has stuff in it that I’m like debating if I’m gonna buy or not it’s usually like stuff that I forgot to get it and then I just don’t care about it anymore. But I’m absolutely an impulse adder to carter. However, I haven’t had to add to cart for a long time now. Because I am addicted to influencing, and I can’t stop, I will reach out to companies to send me shit all the time.

SuChin Pak  04:32

And it works.

Kulap Vilaysack  04:34

Yes he got a trigger. He got.

SuChin Pak  04:38

Wait you just DM them or like you have a deal with fake assistant.

Kulap Vilaysack  04:43

First of all, Dan, this is the or you’re in like mining company. This is the reason of add to cart sir you and I simpatico.

Dan Ahdoot  04:53

I didn’t know though this is the thing I got you know. Okay, so I’m obsessed with food, food is my obsession and I I started a food podcast, and I started posting about food on Instagram. And I remember the first thing that happened was, I reached out to this grill company Trager that makes like $3,000 grills and I was like, hey, I want to buy one of your grills, can I get a discount and I’ll do a post. This was like, four years ago, five years ago. And they were like, You know what, we like your content, we’re gonna give you a free grill. And when that happened, a switch turned on in my head. And I was like, I’m never adding to cart ever again. But it’s become a problem guys. It’s literally become a problem. I reached out to a fucking hot sauce company. Their hot sauce cost $3 I could have just bought the hot sauce. And now here I am on your podcast plugging Yellowbird hot sauce because I have to I’m like beholden now for $3.

SuChin Pak  05:54

It was the cheapest social media by Yellowbird has ever acquired $3 $3 And this guy will go on other people’s podcasts talking about your honor.

Kulap Vilaysack  06:07

He didn’t get one bottle right do I need to get one bottle and they had to pay for shipping the packaging. And when you add all that up, it’s worth more.

Dan Ahdoot  06:16

Can I tell you what that hot sauce goes great on? Tonnino tuna fish. If you guys haven’t tried to Tonnino tuna fish, you really gotta give it a shot. Guys I’m Hawking tuna fish to get free cans of tuna fish. This is real. They’ve sent me tuna fish.

Kulap Vilaysack  06:34

Okay, so now we are just in your cart now this is we’re inside of his cart. No no actual money has been exchanged but I will say value is value is being exchanged and I support you and your lifestyle

SuChin Pak  06:51

But also undervalue, undervalue.

Dan Ahdoot  06:56

This is a cry for help guys. I, I’m starting to miss putting things in cart while I’m like setting up lighting and shit so that I could take a picture picture of hot sauce when I should be like being creative and working. And I’m like putting the right filter on the on the red bottle of hot sauce and like trying to make things with fucking tuna. I don’t I don’t even I’m not even like a crazy tuna fish person but someone was like this is the best tuna fish you gotta get it and I was like okay, I guess I’ll, I’ll start Hawking tuna fish.

Kulap Vilaysack  07:26

Wait, but is it the best tuna fish?

SuChin Pak  07:29

First of all it’s in a jar I’ve never seen I mean that’s that’s class it’s.

Kulap Vilaysack  07:33

Not a can.

SuChin Pak  07:34

It’s not a can of the sea. Let’s let’s roll back Dan do the plug right.

Dan Ahdoot  07:42

All jokes aside Hey for all the listeners out there Tonnino Ventresca tuna gives you the best of of all the tuna worlds that you it’s really good to.

Kulap Vilaysack  07:52

Of all the worlds. Let’s take it again.

Dan Ahdoot  07:57

Hey, all jokes aside, have you ever been like Wow, I love cool. So you’re gonna love Tonnino it’s a kind of tuna fish. And it’s got the word tuna in it sort of on Tonnino tuna, though there’s no way in it but But all jokes aside to Tonnino Ventresca tuna first of all, this is like $12 for.

SuChin Pak  08:21

A like, you literally made $4 after taxes.

Dan Ahdoot  08:30

It’s a $12 jar of tuna. It is actually the most delicious tuna you can get. I do love tuna. European tuna used to be as good as it got. This is a I believe it’s an American company. I don’t know.

Kulap Vilaysack  08:43

I mean, isn’t it Italian? It’s like the name is Italian. Is it not?

Dan Ahdoot  08:48

Oh, no, it says package.

SuChin Pak  08:51

What you get for $4 on social media.

Dan Ahdoot  08:54

It’s Costa Rican it’s a product of Costa Rica. I’m just realizing. Oh my god.

Kulap Vilaysack  09:01

Dan when you are you ready? Dan when you’re ready? Okay, here we go.

Dan Ahdoot  09:05

Hola amigos. Gustavus let’s go Stan el tuna de Costa Rica. nosotros la que tenemos Tonino, Tonino SML hor tuna de Costa Rica, Pura vida.

Kulap Vilaysack  09:20

No, that’s fine. Yeah, we’ve got it. We’re gonna make a few edits.

SuChin Pak  09:25

No edits at all.

Dan Ahdoot  09:33

No, but it’s it’s becoming a problem because I did start getting products that I don’t even care for that. I’m just like.

Kulap Vilaysack  09:41

Well, that’s part of it. You know that there has to be a cost Dan.

SuChin Pak  09:45

But then but so when you get it? It doesn’t matter what it is. If a company sends Dan something you feel obliged to get out your lights.

Dan Ahdoot  09:56

I have to get the ring light comes out.

SuChin Pak  09:59

And you’re playing about it?

Dan Ahdoot  10:01

Yeah, I’m like, Hey do you guys looking for for a new floral duvet cover that matches with your wallpaper? Well look no further.

Kulap Vilaysack  10:10

But, but that said, I don’t know this, this to me is very in line. This is the evolution of Dan the Dude, as I know him, but you still have found a way to write a book, I want you to tell us about your book Undercooked how I let food become my life navigator and how maybe that’s a dumb way to live. I mean, you sort of already.

SuChin Pak  10:39

See a bit of your book, the inspiration of your book coming in just, just a little tune a bit, you know?

Dan Ahdoot  10:48

Yeah, a little bit. Yeah, it this book happened totally by mistake. I was not setting out to write a book, I did an episode of a of a hunting podcast. Steve Rinella, has the most popular hunting gun podcast in the country called Mediator. And I did an episode of it. And I talked about how, you know, I went hunting once because I wanted to get the most local seasonal organic food ever. And I think, you know, he’s used to having like, like, Joe Rogan, the hunters on his show. And like, I’m like a Jew from Long Island talking about hunting. And it was very funny. And the episode did very well. And my managers were like, can you write a movie about your hunting experiences? I tried to write a movie, it was no bueno. And she was like, just write an essay about it. So I wrote an essay. And she was like, This is good. Do you have a couple more and you like about food? And it was all about how like, like, just funny food adventures that I’ve had. So she was like, this could be a book and we brought it to publishers. And they were like, dueling what does it called.

Kulap Vilaysack  11:51

Competing

Dan Ahdoot  11:52

Yes. Competing bidding war.

Kulap Vilaysack  11:54

Wow, yeah its huge.

Dan Ahdoot  11:56

I know, it was wild. And then suddenly, it’s like, you know, it’s one of those things where you realize a Kulap in our, in our biz, when you sell a show, and it’s like, This is so great. And it’s like, fuck, now I got to do it.

Kulap Vilaysack  12:07

I mean, I sort of remember it. It’s been a while down.

Dan Ahdoot  12:13

But it was while it took about a year to write and, I didn’t really know what the arc was gonna be of it, getting into it and ended up being I think, really good. And it’s, it’s sort of like a David Cendrawasih. Take on food. So it’s all these independent essays that lead to a bigger arc. All very funny stories about food.

Kulap Vilaysack  12:29

Wow. And when does it come out? Dan.

Dan Ahdoot  12:32

It comes out March 21. Spring Solstice, just in time for Solstice really.

Kulap Vilaysack  12:38

Didn’t mandate it. You didn’t mandate it Spring Solstice.

Dan Ahdoot  12:43

Hey, man, some people look for summer books. Not me. Not I’m not into that summer reading. Solstice. Spring Solstice reading.

Kulap Vilaysack  12:50

Yeah. You like to be sprung, sexier.

Dan Ahdoot  12:52

It is It’s sexier. Because it’s not just light. It’s a little light. It’s a little heavy. It’s spring Solstice.

Kulap Vilaysack  12:58

Dan, let’s get back into your cart.

Dan Ahdoot  13:01

Yes, please.

Kulap Vilaysack  13:01

And I want to know about more things that you haven’t purchased apparently?

Dan Ahdoot  13:07

Well, first of all, I will tell you there is Japanese people don’t play with influencers. That is something I’ve realized. They don’t give a fuck. So a lot of the things in my cart are things from Japan that I reached out to and they don’t care. Like I will reach out be like, hello, I have a show on the Food Network and they’ll hang up on me. Like they don’t care. They don’t care. They don’t even read the DMS that I send them. So I actually have to buy this shit, which actually gives it so much more value.

SuChin Pak  13:39

But don’t stop sending free things to Dan. Right. Still love.

Kulap Vilaysack  13:43

Yeah, yeah, of course. Of course.

SuChin Pak  13:45

Also valuable is putting down your hard earned cash.

Dan Ahdoot  13:49

Yes, Japanese products have become like the girl that doesn’t like me, so I like her extra hard. And there’s two Japanese products that I’m obsessed with. One is togarashi togarashi I you know, I consider myself foodstradamus, I make food. I make food predictions.

Kulap Vilaysack  14:06

Oh, I didn’t know that. Why are you saying this? Like, I know that. That’s amazing.

Dan Ahdoot  14:11

I predicted this Shishito Pepper was gonna have a moment. This is so bold. I 100% predicted that.

SuChin Pak  14:18

I’m sorry. Did you predict that it was gonna have a moment like, among the peoples that hadn’t discovered it? Centuries ago? Correct. Like here in America?

Dan Ahdoot  14:28

Oh, no, I was on a ouija board and I was talking to the ancestors.

SuChin Pak  14:35

Okay, okay, so we’re talking just global Shishito Pepper. Had a moment. Dan, you called it?

Dan Ahdoot  14:41

I gotta say like 10 years ago I called shishito peppers. Okay, I said, Mr. And Mrs. Shishido are onto something here. There’s the Russian Roulette aspect of it. You don’t know which one is going to be hot.

Kulap Vilaysack  14:54

Spicy, you don’t.

Dan Ahdoot  14:55

Keeps you on your toes.

SuChin Pak  14:56

You go into one of those peppers just full right to the stem. I’m or do you just bite off the end to see? Kind of like, what am I getting myself into? Yeah.

Kulap Vilaysack  15:05

Do you nibble or do you inhale.

SuChin Pak  15:07

Because I have to nibble it I’ve caught myself and like had to exit a restaurant, like asthma attack. Pepper down the wrong pipe.

Dan Ahdoot  15:17

Yes, I’m with you. I usually do the nibble. But the problem is the nibble sometimes leads you astray, right?

SuChin Pak  15:23

Because the tip can be sweet.

Dan Ahdoot  15:25

The tip that can be sweet. Wait, what are we talking about? The tip can be sweet. And then the shaft can be just.

SuChin Pak  15:33

Higher.

Dan Ahdoot  15:34

Explosive. Are you guys regretting having me on the podcast?

Kulap Vilaysack  15:41

No, I actually. I’m patting myself on the back right now. You can see through the zoom.

Dan Ahdoot  15:47

Anyway, one of my food predictions togarashi togarashi is a Japanese spice blend.

SuChin Pak  15:53

Love it. Oh, we know.

Dan Ahdoot  15:55

The cool thing about it is that it has seaweed in it. That’s the exciting thing about it. And it goes well on everything. And I think that I feel like the trend is gonna go against liquid hot sauces. Liquid hot sauces have jumped the shark. Except for Yellowbird which is a great hot sauce. And you guys should purchase it. It’s so great. You know, they don’t use any artificial flavors. Yellowbird and they don’t use sugar as a thickener, they use dates. Anyway. togarashi is so delicious. And I don’t think enough people know about it.

SuChin Pak  16:25

Dan, I’m with you on this. I’m with you on this. It’s it.

Dan Ahdoot  16:29

Really.

SuChin Pak  16:30

100% Just two additions to the togarashi conversation. Number one. I keep a little vial of it in my console because I like to eat in the car a lot. And you just never know a sprinkle. You know I can’t have a wet hot sauce and some hot sauces should be refrigerated. I you know, I don’t know which ones but they’re all in my refrigerator. Number two. I had added to cart a few weeks ago Ku, I’m gluten free friendly. And there was a bakery that made and I think it’s the only bakery that makes togarashi bagels. Shop. Yes. So instead of the everything, you know, seasoning, it’s crushing and it’s delicious. So I’m gonna send you the link. superbloom bakery.

Kulap Vilaysack  17:16

Superbloom you hilts. You send him the link and go straight to the DMS. Straight to the DMS. Listen.

Dan Ahdoot  17:24

I’m telling you, so it’s happening already.

SuChin Pak  17:26

Don’t stop trying. Yes, you call it it’s happening. I’m seeing it around me.

Dan Ahdoot  17:31

Yeah, that makes me happy. It makes me happy took her off. She needs a moment. I constantly have that in my cart, because they won’t send me free shit because they ignore my DMs. So I have to get that. The other thing that I had to get that I had to pay for recently, I actually did buy it was a Conroe grill. So I’ve been obsessed with yakitori lately and making my own yakitori and these yakitori grills. They’re made in Japan. They’re like handmade. They’re beautiful. They’re like 300 bucks.

SuChin Pak  18:02

God I want one.

Kulap Vilaysack  18:03

It’s gorgeous.

Dan Ahdoot  18:05

They’re gorgeous.

Kulap Vilaysack  18:06

Fits about 12 skewers fits for Patty’s feeds four to seven people.

Dan Ahdoot  18:12

Okay, so here’s the thing. They don’t even have I looked for an Instagram. All I found was like a distributor in Finland who’s like selling them. So I didn’t even DM them. They don’t even have an Instagram Conroe.

SuChin Pak  18:25

She’s the hottest chick in town.

Dan Ahdoot  18:26

She’s the hottest chick in town. And I, I will track her down. And I will, I will.

SuChin Pak  18:33

Woo her.

Dan Ahdoot  18:35

Oh, woo her. All right.

SuChin Pak  18:41

Tell me about this. Yeah.

Dan Ahdoot  18:42

So here was how I wooed her so, on Amazon. It’s basically like, fight. It’s like 450 bucks on Amazon. And I saw that it’s sold by a place in Torrance, which is a town here in Southern California has a very big Japanese population.

SuChin Pak  18:58

That’s right. Yes.

Dan Ahdoot  19:00

So I reached out to the store. Hi, I’m Danna. Dude, I have a podcast. I have Food Network show. I would love to to promote your your it was like a Japanese like were like a, like a warehouse where they sell Japanese stuff. Okay.

SuChin Pak  19:15

So you reached out to them to, to promote their Japanese warehouse, Japanese.

Dan Ahdoot  19:23

Literally, I was like, I’ll get in my car drive to Torrance and we’ll do a little walk around and look at this. I’ll this is where they have ramen bowls. This is cool, right? Like the guy was had wanted nothing to do with me. Nothing to do. I was like, I have a 2000 followers. I have a blue checkmark. He didn’t care at all. And I was like, so no, this guy he’s like no discount. I was like fuck, and then I went on eBay.

SuChin Pak  19:53

Did you pitch eBay? Did you please tell me you pitch eBay. Call I have a blue cap. I will promote the selling of sketchy products used and, and possibly fake on a platform that is accessible to all.

Dan Ahdoot  20:16

Oh man, I should have no I should I didn’t think about that. I’m gonna DM eBay now. So yeah, I found some guy who’s like an import export guy who does stuff on eBay.

Kulap Vilaysack  20:30

Okay. This is this is classic Dan Ahdoot, I just want you to know that like, almost every story is.

Dan Ahdoot  20:38

I got this sent to me, straight from Japan, like opened it and it was like wrapped in Japanese newspaper. It was like, I can t go, oh, Moy autentico they were like I you know, I took Google Translate to see what the story is about. It was like cherry blossom season is coming up soon. And.

SuChin Pak  20:59

Wait, so did you they did send it to you?

Dan Ahdoot  21:01

Yeah, no. I paid for it.

SuChin Pak  21:03

Oh, you pay for it. But what you paid for it. You pay for it? It was it was cheaper. Right? You got a good price.

Dan Ahdoot  21:11

It was cheaper. But I didn’t get a discount from him. He didn’t care either. He was like, Look, dude, I’m like a YouTube import. What am I gonna? I did say I will promote your not YouTube. I said I will promote your eBay store. If you want.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:26

Please don’t.

Dan Ahdoot  21:27

He was like.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:27

Please don’t.

Dan Ahdoot  21:28

No this was actually really sad. Because he actually like recognized me and he’s like, aren’t you like, a famous guy on TV? Why are you asking for a discount? I was like, yeah, no, no, I was just kidding. JK, JK, I’ll pay full price. I’ll leave a tip. Can you leave a tip on Ebay? I have money. I’m doing fine. Everything’s fine. So anyway,

Kulap Vilaysack  21:56

But you love this grill. It was worth it for me about the grill.

Dan Ahdoot  22:03

The Konro grill is great. It’s, it’s the best thing about it is the heat retention. So it’ll retain heat longer than like a any other grill like, you know that you can get at at a Home Depot or whatever. Then those Yeah, like not knocking. Not knocking them.

Kulap Vilaysack  22:21

But you want to be open to a free one. If it was to come your way.

Dan Ahdoot  22:25

Yes. Oh, yeah. If whoever gave me a free one, I’d be like, Oh, this is so much better than Konro not even a question like.

Kulap Vilaysack  22:34

Everybody on this podcast can be bought I think if that isn’t clear, and to SuChin’s point, bottom price.

Dan Ahdoot  22:44

Oh, yeah guys, is it you know what, wait a second. I’m realizing something. Wait, SuChin, are you? Are we Are you a child of immigrants?

SuChin Pak  22:55

I am. Yes. Yes. Yes.

Dan Ahdoot  22:58

We’re all children of immigrants. I’m telling you. I think this is what it is. Because we grew up in a culture.

SuChin Pak  23:04

Free money is worth more than actual real money. Yes, it is the value of it. It’s on a different currency.

Dan Ahdoot  23:11

You can’t say no.

SuChin Pak  23:12

I know. You can’t say no and I’m with you. There are times Ku when when we get stuff and I’m like agonizing over like posting and I hate doing all that. And I’m thinking in my mind. This is $13 Like, I have to value myself more. It’s like becomes a self esteem. Convo and it gets dark it gets really effing dark. Because I at the end of the day, most of the time say No, I think, I, I think I am worth $13 and not a penny more. And then I post it and I get it man I get it.

Samantha Bee  24:33

What about this aged balsamic vinegar?

Dan Ahdoot  25:05

Okay so if I haven’t been painted myself in the corner of food elitist yet this is going to really is gonna really put me there is going to cement me in there.

Kulap Vilaysack  25:15

I’m ready.

Dan Ahdoot  25:16

Okay so, most balsamic vinegar that that everyone has is not real balsamic vinegar shots fired. Okay, it is like a it is a red wine vinegar that is that is given like a sort of a fragrance almost like a perfume to have that balsamic smell. It’s not real balsamic vinegar though. Real Deal Balsamic Vinegar has to A come from Modena B has to be 100% Ventresca grapes. C, yes, it has to be aged for a certain amount of time. And D It can only be served in one type of bottle. There’s only one bottle that all aged balsamic can go into and is designed by the guy who designed Ferraris in the 1970s. Okay. Now, here’s the thing. It ain’t cheap. It’s really expensive. It’s like, it’s like 125 150 bucks a bottle and but the thing is, it’s supposed to be used so sparingly. This is not like, Oh, let me make my salad and just put a bunch of balsamic and like, this is something that you want to put a little bit over like a beautiful aged ribeye that you cooked. You know, it’s like it’s used as like a seasoning like that. It’s, it’s full of umami. It’s sweet, it’s tangy, it’s, it’s just like an ethereal flavor that makes regular you can’t even have regular balsamic after that, which is fine. Like I use I use other vinegars for my you know my bulk vinegars, but having some of that throwing a little bit of it on ice cream even. On strawberries.

SuChin Pak  26:52

Soft voice down. Yeah, this is real sexy. Yes.

Dan Ahdoot  26:55

Yes, on a risotto on a risotto with porcini mushroom.

SuChin Pak  26:59

Oh, yummy.

Dan Ahdoot  27:01

It is divine. And let me tell you, I had a bottle that lasted me 10 years, so.

Kulap Vilaysack  27:07

Long, longer than any relationship you’ve ever had. Okay.

SuChin Pak  27:11

Shots fired again.

Dan Ahdoot  27:13

How could you? How could you say that to the star of Bajillion Dollar properties? That is, that’s fun.

Kulap Vilaysack  27:22

I apologize. I apologize.

Dan Ahdoot  27:24

Okay.

SuChin Pak  27:25

Japan’s enemy number one. Maestro.

Dan Ahdoot  27:29

Oh, I will I will get a Japanese product. I will one day I will get one set today.

Kulap Vilaysack  27:37

Dan, you love ASAP for that skin.

SuChin Pak  27:40

You put it all upon your body tell me why you like Aesop  so much. Please tell me they sent you free stuff because I feel like this company is also a big middle finger.

Dan Ahdoot  27:49

Let me tell you something. I wouldn’t be surprised if this company was actually based in Japan because they , they have never responded to any of my DMs at all. Okay, so there’s two moments in my life where I made upgrades that changed my life that were unnecessary upgrades. That I that I needed. Okay. Actually three three. Okay, the first one was when I started to make enough money to get daily wear contact lenses. That was a game changer for me. I was like whoa, I am Daddy Warbucks I feel like this is this is what it feels like to be a rocket tossed.

Kulap Vilaysack  28:28

Toss them every night, toss them or throw them in the fire.

Dan Ahdoot  28:34

Yes, I throw in my fire that’s being lit by $100 bills. Second thing was fluff and fold laundry in New York City when I could I when I could afford that. I was like, Oh my god. This is what it feels like to be the 1% I am I’ve I’ve made it you know whenever Bernie Sanders says like three people control all the wealth I’m like I must be the fourth I must be the fourth.

SuChin Pak  29:00

Fold in New York did no other city right in this country does it like that? that price, right?

Dan Ahdoot  29:07

Way more expensive everywhere else. So crazy. Because it’s the most expensive city in like the world. But for some reason, fluff and fold has not caught up with inflation in New York. And the third thing, which is a recent thing was I want Aesop  products in my home. I like the way they look. I like the way the bottle looks. And I’m not gonna lie. I’ll tell you what I did for a while guys. I would get the Aesop  product. I would be done with the Aesop  product. And then I’d fill it with Dr. Bronner’s. Okay.

Kulap Vilaysack  29:39

Some immigrant shit right here, child. Right.

Dan Ahdoot  29:44

I would sit there now here’s the thing. The consistency of Dr. Bronner’s is way thinner than whatever the Aesop stuff is. So people would be at my at my house. They would press the thing and it would just like spray all over their clothes because they didn’t know they have to You gotta cover it with your head and then and also Dr. Bronner’s just smells like you know like spearmint just like fucking exploded in your in your home. So they’re like this is an Aesop flavor this, this seems really aggressive, like, yeah, it’s a new thing. They’re like, Oh, this is orange Mandarin on the bottle.

SuChin Pak  30:17

Dan take it from a ninja here. What you’ve done wrong is is you’ve waited till the very end, what you do is you either pour out half of it or use half of it and then fill it with the Bronner’s. Shake it up, get it, get it in there. So that should mesh it so that the ruse i,s is still there. It’s almost believable. And and they’re not going to be so emboldened to call you out on on some thin liquid coming out of your ear is up.

Kulap Vilaysack  30:52

So the viscosity will be a little better. But you know, the confusing scent though might tip them off. Orange spearmint might tip them off. But yes, the suture that is high level right there.

Dan Ahdoot  31:05

But look, I had this moment where like, you know, I took the I took the bottle of Aesop that I had, and I like I you know, I turned it left and right. So I could really gauge in the viscosity. And then I was in the supermarket and like the soap aisle, and I was picking up soaps and turning them to see if the viscosity was the same. And then I just had this moment of like, Dan, what are you doing? This is pathetic. You’re the star of Bajillion Dollar Properties. Why are you doing this? So after that, I was like, You know what, I’m paying full price for Aesop. You know, I worked hard for this. I worked my ass off. And I look at it now and I’m proud. It’s like, it’s like, yeah, I worked really hard for that. And I can do it. I can afford it. Because I’m getting free hot sauce and free tuna. And so you know, I deduct that price from how much you know the Aesop costs.

SuChin Pak  31:57

Here I would say that that math is correct. Well, this is this is a food heavy episode. And so we want to talk about a fantastic brand called Belgian Boys which we are both loving. It is a woman owned woman led company so check check on that. They make delicious European breakfast foods like belgian waffles and little cute mini pancakes. They have delicious, amazing cookies. All for whenever you need a sweet afternoon snack.

Kulap Vilaysack  32:32

You know me, I love packaging. I love aesthetics. flavor, of course is paramount. But everything is wrapped up in this like bright, whimsical packaging. So it feels like a treat for my eyes before I even take a bite with my mouth. I’m actually I’m hungry.

SuChin Pak  32:51

You’re gonna get to it, you’re gonna get to it Ku. The thing is, is that I like to stock my pantry sometimes with these beautiful bright boxes, right? So my kids are like, what’s behind the groats? You know, like, let’s get through the millet.

Kulap Vilaysack  33:10

Mom, we like sunflower butter, but not that much.

SuChin Pak  33:14

And I bust out, this cute box of Belgian Boys breakfast. And I say guys, it’s happy time. And you know, it’s funny. I was talking on my friend trip just recently and I was listening to these women. These busy busy women talk about how much effort they put into their breakfasts. Like what they cook their chili. I was like cook.

Kulap Vilaysack  33:41

I know. I know. You can hear her being incredulous.

SuChin Pak  33:44

But just like face. I felt betrayed. I thought we were all here. scrounging for clearance items together like it felt like an affront anyway, for me, like breakfast is like how quickly can I shove it in your mouth? And can you be out the door like, this stuff is just so easy and delicious. And they have that warm feeling in their tummy. You want to send your kids off right to face the day with a warm tummy filled with with good food.

Kulap Vilaysack  34:16

Su do you own a waffle iron? Are you scared? Do you own a grid?

SuChin Pak  34:22

The question is how many have I returned? You guys, first of all, leave a voicemail. Give me a frickin waffle maker. That doesn’t make a mess. That doesn’t smell like burning plastic. Okay, and that doesn’t take up my entire shelf. I have a very small kitchen. Okay, until then. It’s Belgium Boys. I throw them in the toaster oven. Like my kids are like you’re my mom, my mom. They’re bragging. They’re bragging to their friends about.

Kulap Vilaysack  34:52

Wow Su one of the only times right.

SuChin Pak  34:56

I’ll take every single time.

Kulap Vilaysack  34:59

SuChin Pak  36:27

The last thing I want to ask you about is a dog. What are you doing? What are you doing? It’s a living thing. What are you doing Dan?

Dan Ahdoot  37:21

I have always toyed with getting a dog. I’ve always wanted to get a dog. When I moved to LA I was like I really want to get a dog. And I was like I want to get a Vizsla and I looked up where to get Vizsla. And there was a breeder in San Diego and I drove down to San Diego and I met this you know born again, Christian breeder. They’re all born again Christians for some reason. And I meet her and I meet the Vizsla and I’m like, This is great. I definitely wanted this dog I put a down payment on the Vizsla. She’s like, Okay, I’m gonna go and you know, neuter the dogs gonna get neutered this week, and then you can come pick it up. I was like, Cool. Then I’m home. And I was like, What have I done? I don’t, I can’t do this. I can’t have this dog. But I was so humiliated that I like committed to this woman and she sent me an email that was like, Oh my God, you’re gonna be such a great. Oh, George is gonna be gonna love you. You’re gonna be the best owner for George George is gonna have such a great time in your home. I’m so glad George found you. And I’m like, how am I gonna do this? So made up this whole lie, where I sent her this email and I was like, hey, Betty. So great to meet George. Listen, this is crazy. But I just found out I’m in the final runnings to be a writer for Saturday Night Live. So I might have to move back to New York. I will let you know soon.

SuChin Pak  38:39

It’s both a lie and a manifestation. You mean like you’re throwing. I love how also that is working for you. The light could work.

Kulap Vilaysack  38:49

Yeah, yeah.

Dan Ahdoot  38:51

And I was like, I promise. I will let you know. As soon as I find out. She’s like, okay, yeah, please let me know. And then two hours later, I was like, Oh my god. Amazing news. Yeah, I just found out I’m gonna be a writer. I have to move to New York. It’s such a bummer. I’m not gonna be able to get George. I’m so sorry. It’s really awful. I really love the dog. I wish it’s I hope it’s gonna I’m sure it’ll have a great home and she writes back. Three words. Shame on you.

SuChin Pak  39:17

Oh.

Dan Ahdoot  39:21

And it was like a dagger in my heart. And then like I doubled down on my life for some reason with this with this stranger. I’m like, How dare you? I work my whole life to for this. This is a lifetime achievement to be a writer and sign it. And then she just sent me back my deposit and never said anything.

SuChin Pak  39:40

I can’t believe she sent you back. I can’t believe she sent it back.

Dan Ahdoot  39:43

She sent it back. Which brings us back to now so I’m back in my dog fever.

SuChin Pak  39:50

No. Dan Yeah.

Dan Ahdoot  39:54

Dan.

SuChin Pak  40:03

We’re looking at.

Dan Ahdoot  40:05

Guys, guys, guys, I got this I got.

Kulap Vilaysack  40:07

No, as it else coming knocking again.

SuChin Pak  40:13

By the way, great merch for whatever project you’re working on shame on you like I mean the though that I’m still recovering from that that that stole my breath.

Dan Ahdoot  40:26

What was the last time you heard someone say shame on you in like a serious way not like shame on you like shame like a shame be upon your home like shame.

Kulap Vilaysack  40:35

A lot of decisions and my personal is based on never hearing that because I don’t want that so bad.

SuChin Pak  40:42

So that was a while ago. Now you’re on another dog site.

Dan Ahdoot  40:48

Okay, so I went on one of these sites that you know, they’re like the Cosmo questions like answer these 10 questions will tell you what dog is best for you. You know, so I answer the questions and it spits out you, my friend are 100% match for a Cirneco dell’Etna Dog.

SuChin Pak  41:04

I’ve never heard of this dog breed before.

Dan Ahdoot  41:07

What is the check of the Letna and so I look it up and it’s I’m like, Oh my God, this dog is so goofy. I love it. And it’s it’s got a cool story. Like they’re only in Sicily and they were like feral hounds were related to them and they would hunt rabbits and they’re like, very finicky like me. I was like, Oh, this could be a good match. Anyway, everyone I showed this dog to is like, that’s literally the ugliest dog that is in the world. My brother calls it a Nazi dog because it does have like a little like an intense kind of.

Kulap Vilaysack  41:38

Very upright .

SuChin Pak  41:39

Yeah. And it’s and it’s is it hair less? I mean, is there, are these images of just one dog? It looks it looks like a yakitori skewer if I’m just gonna be honest with you.

Kulap Vilaysack  41:54

Okay, it also it’s an athletic Hunter dog Dan, let’s just talk about your lifestyle. Okay, yes, you want one hunting podcast?

Dan Ahdoot  42:05

Right right right right right.

Kulap Vilaysack  42:06

You’re but you’re you know you’re a writer and influencer and an influencer? Yeah, I don’t know if it’s a match and lifestyle. You know what I mean?

SuChin Pak  42:17

But let’s hear your pitch Dan. Let’s hear your pitch.

Dan Ahdoot  42:20

Well, my pitches I DM the breeder and I’m like, give me a discount on this fucking dog. I will put you on the map.

SuChin Pak  42:28

Please let it be the same San Diego.

Dan Ahdoot  42:32

Like, Wait, what happened? Oh, yeah, now, man, I’m writing. I’m writing I’m Barry. The writers room is in LA back here.

SuChin Pak  42:44

So okay, this is your dream dog. But you’re not going to get the dog.

Dan Ahdoot  42:49

I don’t think I’m going to but at night I do watch videos of it and I fantasize about getting it I do on YouTube. And no one else likes it.

Kulap Vilaysack  42:57

I just don’t know if your energies match and you don’t have like land for it to run on and actually hunt things. That’s just the piece because a dog that is bred for that and meant for that they will start to be destructive. If they don’t get that.

SuChin Pak  43:14

So you have to just buy a farm. You have to buy a farm.

Dan Ahdoot  43:16

Yeah.

SuChin Pak  43:17

Sorry. You’re gonna DM a farm? Yeah.

Dan Ahdoot  43:20

I will DM a farm.

Kulap Vilaysack  43:23

Just gonna like look at a farm. Like are you on Instagram? I’ll put your farm on them more on the map.

Dan Ahdoot  43:31

I mean, if celebrity is not to be used to get free stuff then what is it for? I’ve gotten out of so much stuff by just like hey, you know? So it’s like this is why we do this. Whoa. Oh, I want to be an artist. I mean my art to the world. No, I don’t I want free fucking tuna. That’s all I want. I’m a simple man.

Kulap Vilaysack  43:55

And a farm.

Dan Ahdoot  43:57

And a farm.

Kulap Vilaysack  43:58

For my doggie.

Dan Ahdoot  44:00

Farm and a free dog that can roam on this farm.

Kulap Vilaysack  44:04

Dan tell all of the companies that are listening right now how where can they DM you? What are your socials?

Kulap Vilaysack  44:12

I thought you’d never ask my socials or at stand up down. It’s very easy because I do stand up and my name is Dan and no one can spell a dude. So stand up Dan, on Instagram, and on Twitter and on Tik Tok and on all the things.

SuChin Pak  44:35

On this podcast, one of our most favorite things to do is to share amazing women owned businesses on the pod. And today, we’re doing something a little different, but kind of still the same. And we’re calling out a nonprofit organization that has been making a difference for women and for girls all over the world. I’m sure you’ve heard of them. Our partner Care.

Kulap Vilaysack  44:59

Care is a global nonprofit that works around the globe to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice snaps. It is one of the world’s largest humanitarian organization with a holistic approach to work in crisis response. That means like food and water, health, education, work and climate change, all centered in gender equality. And in support of International Women’s Day this year, Su, they’ve launched hashtag women know how, okay, yes, because women know how to make the world a better place. Where’s the lie? Su? Where’s the lie?

Kulap Vilaysack  45:01

Yeah. Wow.

Kulap Vilaysack  45:01

Dan, I love you. I love you, Danny.

Dan Ahdoot  45:09

Love you too.

SuChin Pak  45:35

And there are so many lies in this podcast, but not here. Not here that hashtag women know how. Listen, some of you guys may know this, but Kulap and I met in the activism space working for time’s up. And our API group in time’s up is called a plus. And some of the best friendships have come from there. Some of the best working relationships have come from there. And this is a community of API women in media and entertainment. And yes, we connect women with mentors, we’ve, you know, done amazing work in politics, we get boots on the ground about issues,

Kulap Vilaysack  46:14

Voting drives, we’ve done panels, Su and I we hosted a show at UCB, featuring Asian American women talent.

SuChin Pak  46:23

And we’ve done all these things. And those things have been extremely fulfilling, you know, trying to create a world that we want to live in that reflect our values. COVID hits, right, everything comes to a halt, things are falling apart at the seams. And I think one of the things that we decided as a group was, you know, what our community needs. We need a self care Sunday via zoom, of course, during that time. And so we launched this monthly thing, where we asked leaders of the community to come together and do things like Atsuko came and did a torquing class to get our bodies moving.

Kulap Vilaysack  47:02

We had our favorite for Blanchon Sandra to do self care for us. I mean, it was just this like really this acknowledgement of like we do all these things. But we also need to make sure that we’re taking care of ourselves.

SuChin Pak  47:14

And that’s for me, how women know how we know how to take care of our communities. But we also know how to take care of ourselves and our community.

Kulap Vilaysack  47:24

And we are so proud of care as a sponsor for the show. They truly are doing amazing work all over the world. And if you want to support the efforts, you can join them at care.org/women know how.

Kulap Vilaysack  47:40
