June Diane Raphael, Jessica St. Clair

Jessica St. Clair  01:31

Hi, I’m Jessica St. Clair.

June Diane Raphael  01:33

And I’m June Diane Raphael.

Jessica St. Clair  01:35

And this is The Deep Dive. We’re about to do what women have done for centuries we’re crowding around the fire with our generous hunches. We got babies hanging off our tents and we’re gonna share with you our fears.

June Diane Raphael  01:48

That’s right.

Jessica St. Clair  01:49

Our joys, our tips on how to stay alive.

June Diane Raphael  01:53

Now Jess, we’re heating a call that no one has made.

Jessica St. Clair  01:58

Not a soul but you’re invited to listen. Absolutely, because we make one promise and one promise only we will not Google a thing because frankly, we’re too damn tired. Please get ready to go on The Deep Dive.

June Diane Raphael  02:18

Hi, Jessica.

Jessica St. Clair  02:20

June, how are you?

June Diane Raphael  02:23

I’m laughing so hard that I mean, if I may speak plainly about it that you had COVID.

Jessica St. Clair  02:31

No, I didn’t just have COVID I had COVID I didn’t know it, and then right after I tested negative for COVID or like the day I got a horrible cold that I thought was a rebound of COVID but it’s just a horrible cold. That seems to be taking both BB and I down and meanwhile, Dan is just zippity doo da da just doing just fine.

June Diane Raphael  02:58

You know? I’m obviously I’m heading out on a big European adventure. And I’m I don’t feel great, you know, and I’m just gonna will myself to feel better.

Jessica St. Clair  03:13

Yet, like I’m at the point where I’m like, and this is not yesterday.

June Diane Raphael  03:17

Oh, good.

Jessica St. Clair  03:18

This isn’t really a joke. I’m kind of I know we need to contact like a shaman. Do we need to get an exorcist like I feel like I don’t even know is here.

June Diane Raphael  03:28

Remember what I had a respiratory disease for no less than six months for a year, we had a respiratory disease.

Jessica St. Clair  03:36

And we haven’t gotten better.

June Diane Raphael  03:38

I really want to say like, I wouldn’t say I’m 100% not 100% Now, I did do some some sort of, like data pooling yesterday where I think that I’m worse when I’m outside so which makes me think I have allergies.

Jessica St. Clair  03:56

Oh, I love for that to be the case. But I really do think we need to be sent away for a Victorian rest cure.

June Diane Raphael  04:02

like to what are those things called Sanitarium.

Jessica St. Clair  04:07

Sanatorium, I don’t know if that was for but I remember people would be to the south of France for, now it turns out it didn’t do anything for them. But they got to be in the south of France so that’s something.

June Diane Raphael  04:22

Well just I you know, I just laughing so hard and you’re coming on today because Jess and I were gonna shoot something last week and we had.

Jessica St. Clair  04:30

You were gonna put me in a sauna.

June Diane Raphael  04:32

I got it all I have it all blocked out on my calendar like this is what we’re doing. And then like honestly felt like moments before you were supposed to arrive. You texted and said I forgot, I have COVID I laughed so hard. You’re like do you still want me to come? And I no.

Jessica St. Clair  04:52

Didn’t know I kept forgetting because it was so ridiculous. It’s so 2022, and yeah, here we are.

June Diane Raphael  05:01

And you know, it’s so funny because I’m also really like, you know, my brain is like not great. Yeah, and I’m like did I also thought we already recorded this podcast this week, did we?

Jessica St. Clair  05:15

I wish I knew I don’t know but I will tell you things that the GC like couldn’t have never been better.

June Diane Raphael  05:24

Oh my god what’s going on lift me up.

Jessica St. Clair  05:26

As you can see I have my eye makeup on from last night, although it looks great.

June Diane Raphael  05:31

Thank you haven’t gotten dressed yet today. So lift me up, take me somewhere.

Jessica St. Clair  05:35

So, […] never been no when you when you go from a dual parent home to a single suddenly you’re all of these duties because I walk around thinking I do everything. Oh, I do everything. It turns out actually not true. There’s half of the tasks I haven’t been doing. You know, as simple as walking the dog walk.

June Diane Raphael  05:59

Dog is a big one. I find it very hard to walk the dog and take care of children in the morning.

Jessica St. Clair  06:05

Now when I tell you that BB swing crawling into my bed at 2am every night every night, I’m like Bibi, you’re in your own bed. She’s like, Absolutely, I gotcha, gotcha boo, and then like crawls in there, right? So what she did last yesterday was she took my phone which had the alarm on it and brought it woke up at 5am brought it into her room and was looking at God knows what you know, on Tiktok or whatever she was getting on to. And then the alarm went off and she just silenced it. So I woke up at 7:40 that’s the other thing is Dan such a grounding force. He is like Punxsutawney Phil, he is Groundhog Day he is getting up and he is chopping wood and carrying water all day all day. And I’m just an impulse the same we can get distracted on a whim.

June Diane Raphael  06:53

I feel like I’m more you know, I’m the first one to rise I’m I’m studying house in the morning I’m opening up the shutters and taking the newspaper.

Jessica St. Clair  07:02

That’s middle town, quite village.

June Diane Raphael  07:06

Every day like the one before.

Jessica St. Clair  07:09

And that’s the other thing is you don’t give credit to your partner for what they give you and complete you in terms of your ground their grounding presence. So when Dan’s and I hear I’m just like there are no rules I’m up. So I got up at 7:38 and we got out of the door at 7:48 we got out of the door at 7:55 case a […] made case a […] no eight o’clock 12 minutes case a […] made a brush tear toothbrush all of it in the car lunch made. And Dan found that so because here’s the thing, I have a superpower, chaos. I thrive in it. I’m so good at at last minute chaos. It fuels me. I am I’d be great as an EMT if I had any medical expertise so anyway, so that’s what’s going on so the house looks insane. So how many of you have the opportunity to walk out of your house close the door and hop across the street? To the GC?

June Diane Raphael  08:18

It’s wonderful.

Jessica St. Clair  08:20

There’s not there’s nothing in here it’s been recently cleaned. I started dirty can’t because there’s nobody here right it’s up for you, and Carl though he’s not allowed in for the I can’t stand to look at his face for one more second he has to stay back in his home and then it’s an I planted an herb garden.

June Diane Raphael  08:42

Oh my Jess.

Jessica St. Clair  08:44

Out on the picnic table outside and a very hot fireman came by to check my level.

June Diane Raphael  08:52

Oh even even the worst looking firemen let’s just let it be known are hot. Like no matter what. And we’ve talked about touched on this before that is like a cliched fantasy that that I am so on board for it’s like yeah, they’re.

Jessica St. Clair  09:11

You never dated anyone in the in the services of the not the armed service. But you never dated anybody like a fireman or a cop. Or anybody did you June? I would have thought from Long Island. I know it’s like so out of reach my friend brandy did dated a DEA agent. And listen, was she afraid? Cuz he did do a tour in Iraq and I think she woke up at one point and he had just like was going crazy punching a pillow and so like, you know, there were some teachers there.

June Diane Raphael  09:44

Don’t worry about that, yeah.

Jessica St. Clair  09:46

But that’s hot. So when it comes a knockin at the GC and says, can I check your levels? The answer is yes.

June Diane Raphael  09:55

It’s a resounding yes.

June Diane Raphael  09:57

Yes, that’s gonna be it yes.

June Diane Raphael  10:00

No, Jess, here’s where I have to. I have to ask you for help. I need advice. And I thought you just a person.

Jessica St. Clair  10:08

Sure.

June Diane Raphael  10:09

So, okay, so spring break is upon us going to, you know, going to Paris I’m going to […] Saturday and I know it’s so crazy and I mentally don’t have my head around it except just before this. I finally print it out. I just want you to see what I did here, can you see these?

Jessica St. Clair  10:28

Oh, dabs she’s showing me an itinerary with tabs and different tabs and highlighted sections and this is oh.

June Diane Raphael  10:39

Lights to Belfast train to London, then flights to car pickup Belfast. Oh Glasgow car.

Jessica St. Clair  10:47

Wonderful […] out all days.

June Diane Raphael  10:50

Well, because honestly, I need there’s a lot of like tickets and stuff. Here’s what I need to here’s what mentally I need to prepare for, and they need advice on. I am incredibly sensitive to the rain.

Jessica St. Clair  11:10

Yeah, but it’s more romantic over there.

June Diane Raphael  11:13

Okay, so this one I should ask you. Now I’m bringing rain boots. I have no choice. I need to be ready for the elements. You look at the weather the 10 day weather report. It’s gonna be raining Scotland rain, like.

Jessica St. Clair  11:24

End of March. It’s gonna have to tell you I that was when I arrived in London. And it does, it’s quite cold. They haven’t taken a turn yet into spring.

June Diane Raphael  11:33

So I need to do a little bit of work mentally to combat it to say, June this is what it is. Go have a great time, suggestions?

Jessica St. Clair  11:50

Yes, and we have several British listeners, some Scottish and Irish listeners and some people in the academy who of course we can hit up. We have an Irish step dancing instructor actually, that we can hit up. But here’s the thing, so the reason why and I think what you’re worried and you’re having PTSD is that you remember how depressed I was over there when it was raining in your room.

June Diane Raphael  12:14

You’re depressed, I was in New York when it would rain.

Jessica St. Clair  12:18

That’s right, but here’s the difference. I when I was over there in the rain, I was not allowed to go into pubs because it was the dark days of the Pandy. So I was out in the elements all the time. The thing about Europe is that in the in the early spring is that you get to go inside and be around a pub and what I want you to do is really lean into drinking and it will arise.

June Diane Raphael  12:44

With me but okay.

Jessica St. Clair  12:45

That’s fine, because no because the kids are welcome. So what you’re going to do is get on board for an endless string of cafes and pubs and warm beverages, Ales.

June Diane Raphael  12:59

Oh, I love this […]

Jessica St. Clair  13:00

Hot porridge, and you know what? […] hot chocolate.

June Diane Raphael  13:03

That I’m putting on my my list. Is deck, I need to bring a deck of cards.

Jessica St. Clair  13:09

Uh huh, yes, yes. And it’s all about getting cozy by up they always have fires there. Everyone brings their dogs inside dogs are welcome inside the pubs. Did you know that? If I were you, I would literally think of this as a 10 day pub crawl.

June Diane Raphael  13:27

Okay, wonderful. I really just I really[…] I’m just like, I can get really turned around. So I moved to Los Angeles, you know, so I really love the weather in LA because it’s it’s consistent, and I can rely on it. And so I’m just having to really breathe into like, and I’m gonna buy a new raincoat this week.

Jessica St. Clair  13:49

Absolutely invest in one.

June Diane Raphael  13:50

Because the one I have is bullshit and I’m just gonna.

Jessica St. Clair  13:52

You have to be ready and I, also you have to understand they don’t stop for the rain. So when you’re out and about the rain comes you’re not going inside and so you can but they also just put their hoods up like if you can get season where you don’t have to hold a rink because sometimes it’s just sprinting yeah all the time on yeah, but that’s if you can get romantic about it if you like thinking about cozy sweaters and like and just get into the romance of the rain. You’re only there.

June Diane Raphael  14:23

Romance in the rain. That’s the title of this episode. The Romance of the rain.

Jessica St. Clair  14:28

Okay, okay. Outlander think Outlander.

June Diane Raphael  14:31

Never seen it.

June Diane Raphael  14:32

No, I am.

Jessica St. Clair  14:32

Think pelts think for pelts, think, glasses of mead. Think because you’re going to you’re not going to London, right?

Jessica St. Clair  14:38

Oh, you are okay. But you’re going to be in Scotland, right? and Ireland. Okay, so that’s, it’s easier to be romantic over there. But pubs yet do what the locals do look around, see where they’re congregating […]

June Diane Raphael  14:56

Plan this itinerary to the minute.

Jessica St. Clair  15:00

That’s fine but you have to also the best thing about traveling is throwing out the plans and I know that’s not.

June Diane Raphael  15:09

That’s not, no.

Jessica St. Clair  15:14

No but that’s where the magic happens.

June Diane Raphael  15:17

Can I show you the itinerary, can I share my share screen and I don’t want don’t read it out loud because like but I just want I just want you to see okay, so I’ve done a lot of work here.

Jessica St. Clair  15:30

And it’s called The Rat the Rayfield Shear Big European adventure she’s given it a title with an underline okay and then here’s enough listed all the participants and their by their full God given Christian names June Diane Raphael and Paul’s Scheer and August and Sam Raphael Scheer. With William and Christine Scheer. This is weird, this is just for you. Okay, that’s.

June Diane Raphael  16:01

Here’s what I will show you though. Here’s what I show you. I’m really what I’m really proud of is I did a little bookmark. So if I want to, if I want to go to Lake Loch Loch Lomond, I just press this and I go, ooh, we’re right there, okay. And I got all of the stuff.

Jessica St. Clair  16:19

Boy, do you really have it?

June Diane Raphael  16:21

Yeah, you’re gonna do I do now all.

Jessica St. Clair  16:24

I love to have land, you want to have a plan but loosely held.

June Diane Raphael  16:28

Yeah, this is also because we are working there we have shows right? So it’s a little bit like, this is the one thing you’ll see the one day in London I haven’t planned and I actually did just buy tickets to the London Eye, so that’s kind of.

Jessica St. Clair  20:14

And you’ll see I wrote the weather every day.

Jessica St. Clair  20:24

That’s this is really intense […] dinner blank, a four minute walk from hotel like, you know where things are. Now, I really wish someone had asked me what to do in London. I did live there for almost a year but no one give me your Rex. Well, no, I will have to look at your itinerary I have to look. I gonna tell you one of the best trips I’ve literally ever taken in my life. I my friend best friend Kristen and I she flew over and met me for only three days in the El de France, which is where Claire Vivia had stalked her on Instagram and seen she used to visit there with her family. And when we got on that she met me in Paris and when we got on the train, she handed me in a colored sleeve in a colored sleeve our itinerary that she’d printed out for us. She had made all of the reservations and I the way I am is he I would love to go on your itinerary that would make me feel so safe. So taken care of. And did we have the most magical three days of our lives just because I knew we wake up and I will go and now we’re biking and we’re eating muscles and we’re now we’re didn’t have to worry about reservations you know, so there is I do think I forget if it’s Bob Odenkirk somebody said no Michael Showalter said in a writers room you need to have strong opinions loosely held.

June Diane Raphael  21:51

Oh I love that.

Jessica St. Clair  21:53

Feel like haven’t have a plan but also know oh, hey the rains too much then maybe we

June Diane Raphael  22:00

Go into pub, yes 1,000%

June Diane Raphael  22:20

I like an itinerary I’m not gonna lie but more than that. We are traveling with family members gonna help with the kids or we’re doing the shows but I also don’t like and this is you know, not a great quality but I’m willing to admit it to you. I don’t like to be asked questions.

Jessica St. Clair  22:36

Oh, I didn’t realize that

June Diane Raphael  22:39

Really so this is also way to protect myself from questions, like they like you can’t have you actually can’t have a question.

Jessica St. Clair  22:49

it’s it’s your version of check the cow.

June Diane Raphael  22:52

It is check the […] check and you know we’re going to Miami for you’re not going dress which is such a big issue but trapped here he is trust and believe there’s an itinerary that’s an a shared note right now that lots of people are adding to an end because clubs there and Danielle of course we have a lot of Taipei energy heading in there.

Jessica St. Clair  23:15

I never forget the insanity that I felt of when we were going to leave for the airport. Danielle wanted us wheels up at 3am You wanted to get on the car at 7:15 and I was in the middle where the twain shall meet and I’ve never felt such stress in my wife.

June Diane Raphael  23:35

Well, listen, I I will say this about Danielle, it’s really interesting because I did sort of bully her into taking an early flight with me to Miami. And when I say early I do mean we’re leaving at 5:45am, like wheels up at 5:45 But I knew she wanted to get on a later one with Matt and kill and I was like and I wrote on the text I said I’m fine with that, Daniel I just want you to consider what it is to get on the first flight out at LAX with […]

Jessica St. Clair  24:06

Know check and we get on the first.

June Diane Raphael  24:09

First flight out baby.

Jessica St. Clair  24:11

You are a first flight out that first flight amateur hour if you’re going later.

June Diane Raphael  24:18

What are you doing?

Jessica St. Clair  24:19

What are you doing? So it’s an hour? What are you doing to arrive at 9am you must be mentally ill.

June Diane Raphael  24:27

At LAX at Los Angeles International Airport?

Jessica St. Clair  24:31

You’re never gonna see me on a third flight, no. I got her there believe me I got her there but it was you know shocking and then you are not also not going to this other trip that we’re going to be talking about in further detail hits. I know you are. You are you are but on this other trip I’m traveling Casey and Danielle. And well first of all, something terrifying happened which was Danielle just wrote yesterday, like, did anyone get a text that our flights for all canceled and no one had except for okay, so we did have to go back to the drawing board. But you better believe I got myself on my children because we’re all going as a family on a 5:15am plane, because we have a connecting flight and the two of them are looking at 8am and 9am. Oh, never see them, again.

June Diane Raphael  25:25

We got to connect.

Jessica St. Clair  25:27

Now you’re talking like St. Clair, magic there. You’re talking like St. Clair magic. We would when we would drive to New Hampshire for this for the summer, we’d be up at 3am my dad’s like, get on the road, we didn’t even have time to like fully boil the egg. It was a car that was just to drive six hours to another state.

June Diane Raphael  25:51

But Jess, an end, you know, I was getting a lot of pushback on the text about like, I mentally can’t do it that early. And I’m like, I’ll tell you what I mentally can’t do. I mentally can’t, like, be stuck in Dallas be stuck in Dallas and not miss my connecting flight and not arrive till 10pm. That’s what I can’t do, can I sleep on a flight? Yeah.

Jessica St. Clair  26:14

And you know, I think it’s really good that we’re working out these kinks as a group because the truth is, and all the men will be dead and we will be left and we will have to figure it out. And we’ll be traveling together. I mean, that’s the Internet content that I’m here for is all of these best friends in their 80s in Paris, and a dream or like there were two best friends that decided to literally travel around the world in an in a year. I can’t think of a better way to spend your habitude than fuck it. That’s why I love the Marigold Hotel. If you said to me, hey, you want to check in to a place in India and live with me? I’d be like, Okay.

June Diane Raphael  26:56

I love it.

Jessica St. Clair  26:57

I love it.

June Diane Raphael  26:59

Well, and I’m not I haven’t done this level of travel. And of course I’ve done traveled. I’ve actually traveled a lot, but I have not travelled over the pond.

Jessica St. Clair  27:10

And there’s nothing like it. You’re gonna feel like you’ve been gone for three months.

June Diane Raphael  27:14

I know, I haven’t done it before since the kids were born again.

Jessica St. Clair  27:17

And I’m going in June, June I’m going multiple countries. I am afraid.

June Diane Raphael  27:22

Good for you.

Jessica St. Clair  27:23

That’s my passion. It’s planning it.

June Diane Raphael  27:26

It’s so much fun to plan. That’s where I’m like, how can you not have an itinerary Jess?

Jessica St. Clair  27:32

Well, you know that we’re going in June. I don’t have anything booked because I do leave things to chance.

June Diane Raphael  27:38

Where who knows where we’ll be in what days?

Jessica St. Clair  27:40

I don’t know. So Majorca and I.

June Diane Raphael  27:46

Literally, I knew I had this this hotel, the Belmond residency is so crazy expensive. It’s like the number one hotel in the world. And I knew that if I booked a hotel, the last minute, like literally the minute before we got on the plane, I booked it for two people. And I rolled in with a child. And they said, well, this is too small room. And I said, Oh kelda maj what are you going to do? Put us in the supply closet. Cut to I’m going to sweet for the same price for that same discount last minute price, so sometimes the last minutes out […] I can’t live that way. But you know, an even like the very end of our trip was like, oh, we’ll just do like, you know, we’ll drive around Ireland and like, I had like a loose idea of it. And I wanted to keep it loose and then I was like, I’m gonna have to make some dinner reservation.

Jessica St. Clair  28:45

Now the grandparents are involved, do you not if you’re out Uber’s involved?

June Diane Raphael  28:50

They’re not care for that end of it, but like I just needed for myself. Now, I’m also someone who’s fine to cancel a reservation.

Jessica St. Clair  28:58

Great.

June Diane Raphael  28:59

So I’m not structure but I like having I like seeing on paper, I like a tab, you know.

Jessica St. Clair  29:06

I could see you as an as a travel agent from the 80s. And you know, what, where did they go? And they why aren’t they back? Remember where you would go in when I was interviewing in Spain? I know, but like that’s, you’re not gonna replace a human’s touch tomorrow, that’s rare.

June Diane Raphael  29:24

That’s very, very true. That’s very, very true.

Jessica St. Clair  29:29

Sorry, I want to give one more hot tea or listeners, a lot of these Instagram. So most of the people I follow on Instagram are travel bloggers, people who travel for a living and take pictures themselves. A lot of them have a business that you can actually have them plan like for a couple $100 these are the spots that we went to and these are the hotels so if you ever follow someone that you like, go on their website, they may actually plan a trip for you. In fact, that’s a great way to do my […] that thanks for that million dollar idea.

June Diane Raphael  29:59

Well, you know and we did use a travel agent for the flights and in the like trains and stuff like that stuff I didn’t do but I had something really upsetting happened yesterday which I needed to tell you I’m it’s tough that it’s happening at this point. I received an email from Marriott Bonvoy. And the subject of the email was your status has changed.

June Diane Raphael  30:21

Now of course I think I’m move to a higher status. I didn’t know that. I didn’t know you could be divided. No, and Jessica was reached the email. It was like, I was like fucking Marriott Bonvoy. Like, I don’t need this. I’m getting, I’m getting like. Okay, so the subject line is an update regarding your account status. Now, I should have known that it wasn’t like congrats. I just figured like, I’m going to, I’m going to find out something special. And it says you’re now Gold Elite, which again, I think that must be like, wonderful. And then I see. Thank you for your commitment to Marriott Bonvoy, while you didn’t quite meet the requirements to renew your […] by Platinum elite status, please enjoy your Gold Elite benefits, Jess.

Jessica St. Clair  30:21

Oh, no.

Jessica St. Clair  31:21

That’s like getting waitlisted.

June Diane Raphael  31:23

I’m getting I’m getting rejected from parts I find out I didn’t get this part. I find out I didn’t get that your shows not moving forward, whatever it is. Those hits are coming all left in left and fucking right, okay, time to let that thing go. That’s not happening, okay, move your energy over here. That doesn’t seem to be doing that. Well either like, I get this fucking email from Marriott Bonvoy really is like.

Jessica St. Clair  31:51

Such a tough pill to swallow.

June Diane Raphael  31:53

And I don’t even really understand what it means. Does it can’t mean I haven’t spent enough on my credit card. That’s not possible like that. I don’t. I know it’s impossible. So I’m like, what did I do wrong?

Jessica St. Clair  32:07

Well, that’s like, why does Dan have a four star Uber rating? He’s been trying to get it up to five for years. He pissed off somebody in London somehow didn’t show up on the corner. There was a miscommunication, but he still haunts him and follows him. What do they think, too? He said he goes I have to get a cat you know, an Uber at 5am what if no one picks me up because I’m a four.

June Diane Raphael  32:36

It’s so scary. And I’m like, I just wish I knew you know? Are there things that I know like oh, they didn’t like you for that? You’re too old you’re too this you would have are like fine okay, that hurts but fine. But to get this email to get a four star rating and not even know what I do, what can I do to deserve this? Especially just like right before I’m about to travel now, I did put one hotel on Marriott Bonvoy. But I didn’t have enough points for anyone another one so.

Jessica St. Clair  33:11

You know, and when you sent out that text about Miami, anybody have any points, I thought boy, we’re in a different era of our lives were not you know.

June Diane Raphael  33:20

I spent all my points gathering gold status now. I don’t know. I thought it was based on what you’re putting on your credit card.

Jessica St. Clair  33:28

Oh, how dare they? I don’t have the time to look at that fine print, I don’t.

June Diane Raphael  33:33

And I won’t investigate further.

Jessica St. Clair  33:35

I don’t.

June Diane Raphael  33:36

I will not.

Jessica St. Clair  33:37

We’ve given them too much free press. We’re done with them. We’re done with, we’re done with them. Unless they of course come back to us with an offer and then.

June Diane Raphael  33:47

I know I’m like let me go over and see what Chase preferred points have to offer.

Jessica St. Clair  33:52

Exactly, let’s go on the point sky you know.

June Diane Raphael  33:55

See what the points guy has to say because this I can do bad all by myself. And I can feel bad all by myself. I don’t need these emails.

Jessica St. Clair  34:06

This is the problem was zero inbox. You know what I mean? Because you had to open it, I would […]

June Diane Raphael  34:11

Well Jess, I was excited to open I thought I was upgraded and then that’s what I really fuckin resent is like, you buried the lead. You had me open that.

Jessica St. Clair  34:21

That’s like when I didn’t get in to Dartmouth but this very dumb person did from my high school and I went fucking ham on him in the cafeteria. I went ham.

June Diane Raphael  34:36

What do you say?

Jessica St. Clair  34:37

I went ham, this was this was the gentleman who I had had a crush on my whole childhood, my whole unrequited and I think I told you I he was sleeping over my best friend Mike Doyle’s house and then Mike Doyle said that he liked me. And all all weekend I thought my life I was going to change. I thought this is it. And it was like, you know, in Downton Abbey when you get an engagement to the finest family. Because this wasn’t just one popular person, the he was part of a legacy of a dynasty. There were the tourtellotte sisters. And then they were this this family. And I’ll leave his I’ll leave his last name unsaid for the privacy for his own privacy. And so I showed up on Monday. And really, it was a Cinderella story, but it was too good to be true and fairy tales aren’t real and you can’t get plucked from obscurity, you simply can’t, especially when you have a bowl cut that looks like the Tour de France helmet.

June Diane Raphael  35:48

Wearing a mock turtleneck.

Jessica St. Clair  35:49

And you’re wearing no real turtleneck and like a kilt and probably a kilt with like very scratchy tights. And so on Monday, I showed up and I was like this is it. This is where my life changes. And he was ignoring my gaze. He was ignoring me all day. And you would have thought that that was enough for me to get the sign. But instead, I wrote him a note that said, what’s up? Are we doing this? And he wrote back, I actually asked the lead that most popular girl. I asked her out this weekend. And so then I had to labor and I still don’t have closure on this. Even though I did get drunk on a bunch of Long Island Iced Teas several years after we graduated, and I confronted him and his then wife, who was the girl that he asked out that weekend to ask.

June Diane Raphael  36:49

Was it for societal reasons that he couldn’t go through with it? Or was it a joke? Was it to keep the class in a system place?

Jessica St. Clair  36:58

To which he replied, I have no memory of this. Then, my friend Mike said it’s time to go. All of this is to say, I don’t even know how we got into the story. He got in he got into Dartmouth and I was 15 minutes from my parents house and I am in where we’d spend the summers. I thought I was a shoo in and.

June Diane Raphael  37:26

The proximity.

Jessica St. Clair  37:28

Yeah.

June Diane Raphael  37:29

That’s our [..]

Jessica St. Clair  37:31

And I, I remember just he said I got in and I said, you? You got in? You got in? And every one was like, oh, no. And I Tracy flicked exploded. I was like, how is this possible?

June Diane Raphael  37:53

Possible.

Jessica St. Clair  37:53

No, Soccer was a soccer player.

June Diane Raphael  37:56

So he is an athlete.  That’s the entire story there.

Jessica St. Clair  38:01

Yeah, and it was like, just yeah, that was when you know, white men reigned supreme, you know, and they, they probably still do over there.

June Diane Raphael  38:09

But if they play sports they do. I mean, they get in.

Jessica St. Clair  38:12

I told myself I was too interesting in the interview, and my dad said, do you think that was it?

June Diane Raphael  38:22

Too interesting oh my god, Jess.

Jessica St. Clair  38:26

That’s what my dad drives, with that guy, this older kid Dave Schwartzbec dated me for like two weeks and then you just stopped calling and I thought that he was on vacation and my dad drive me over to give him a car. And he drove me over to his house and he said, look, all the lights are off. God damn it, it’s funny to me when dads have to just like give you a slice of reality. They just can’t see it happen anymore to their baby girls. They can’t you know?

June Diane Raphael  39:10

That is so fucking funny.

Jessica St. Clair  39:13

Yeah, these are our formative. These are our formative moments, you know. And we carry them with us.

June Diane Raphael  39:20

We sure do, we sure do. And you know, I don’t understand why you didn’t get into Dartmouth and tell you like I’m sorry, any alums of Dartmouth, but like, they breed fucking assholes.

Jessica St. Clair  39:37

To say that.

June Diane Raphael  39:38

I know I’m serious. It’s no surprise that you didn’t go to Dartmouth. They need assholes, and I know why that’s true.

Jessica St. Clair  43:29

Somebody I know gave me a gave me a tip was that. Before I went off to college, he said, hey, if you ever get yourself in a situation where you’ve had sex and you didn’t, you know, you didn’t want to like be unprotected. Just do shoot with coke. Okay, wow, […] what I want to know is is that true? Would it work? Because it seems like a yeast infection waiting to happen.

June Diane Raphael  44:27

No, it sounds like it.

Jessica St. Clair  44:29

I mean, I’m sure could it could do a lot of.

June Diane Raphael  44:31

Damage, in fact.

Jessica St. Clair  44:34

it would, for sure throw the PH off.

June Diane Raphael  44:36

Absolutely.

Jessica St. Clair  44:37

So sad part about that. That conversation was another boy that I loved for so long. And when he brought me aside, he was older. He brought me aside away from the bonfire we were at I thought this is it. He’s gonna tell me he’s loved me all along. And instead he said hot tip. When you go to college, if you ever get yourself in a situation just remember you can always do shoot coke. Is that with my whole career has been about like trying to be the person who gets kissed outside of the bonfire?

June Diane Raphael  45:26

We’ll just uh, you know, it’s so interesting because when, when I was taking care of me both with the refeeding with a feeding tube, you know that it was rushed to stomach by was a crush the good old days, they had to crush pills and get them into the tube.

Jessica St. Clair  45:44

Oh, my God.

June Diane Raphael  45:45

To have, and of course, the tube got clogged almost immediately. That night it did when I got home. And they told me to flush it with coke.

Jessica St. Clair  45:58

Because it kills everything. Because like, I’m telling you, I think it would work. I’m not giving out this advice.

June Diane Raphael  46:04

Please don’t.

Jessica St. Clair  46:07

But I, I have to tell you, I did keep it in my back pocket. You know if it would jam.

June Diane Raphael  46:13

In a real jam […]

Jessica St. Clair  46:16

Because if you put up a tooth, a human tooth, there was a science teacher we have that would put a human tooth in a glass of coke at the beginning of the year. And by the end of the year, it was disintegrated fully. Think about that for you. You crack open a frosty one.

June Diane Raphael  46:34

Well, I’m sure like yes. And by the way, you know, I made of Coca Cola like you.

Jessica St. Clair  46:39

I know. we do.

June Diane Raphael  46:40

Yeah, we both are like a leader was put down when it was dinnertime, like let’s, let’s see. No, never offered a glass of water like I am me. So what unfortunately, bingo is B has become obsessed with us his shoes.

Jessica St. Clair  46:57

Oh, no. So he really wants to get at them. And while they’re on his feet, or just now while.

June Diane Raphael  47:03

They’re on his feet, but shoes and so. So much of like the Malay of the day is like trying to get him to drop a shoe. You know, it’s so hard to get him to drop a shoe. And again, I mentioned this before, but like he knows and to see him prance off with.

Jessica St. Clair  47:21

It’s funny, you know, it’s a funny bit. I know that sometimes our children can be poorly behaved because if it’s a funny bit.

June Diane Raphael  47:29

I can’t let it slide. I have to give it its due. I must give it its due, that’s my commitment to the the Comedy Arts.

Jessica St. Clair  47:38

That’s yeah, he did an impression on me last night after I was yelling at her about something and it was spot on and perfect. And I said, bravo.

June Diane Raphael  47:47

You nailed it.

Jessica St. Clair  47:48

The Golden Globe goes to you.

Jessica St. Clair  47:51

Speaking of, Jess at the academy, as some of you know, we’ve talked about it. I have we both been taking over a lot of the how you say.

Jessica St. Clair  48:04

Creative we’re editing and shooting our own stuff now.

June Diane Raphael  48:11

A lot of the operations you know.

Jessica St. Clair  48:13

Yeah, homesteading, you know, when you would not just plant the crops, but you would can sell them and that’s what we’re doing. Yeah, we’re taking where the academy I I know, we’re gonna be talking more about this as we go forward, but we are experiencing a rebrand that is going to be looking.

June Diane Raphael  48:35

Oh, we have something exciting to talk about. But we should we talk about it now or.

Jessica St. Clair  48:39

Let’s we can tease it.

June Diane Raphael  48:41

Oh, we can tease it. So we are really excited because Jessica and I are about to launch the deeper dive at the Academy, which is going to be an after show that discusses with our students, we’ll be we’ll be bringing them on live some of the topics, that we discussed on the episode so it is going to be a part wrapped around interaction.

Jessica St. Clair  49:11

Interactive experience and what’s interesting excited some of our podcasts are recaps of other podcasts so if anything this is a is an After After Show.

June Diane Raphael  49:21

That’s right.

Jessica St. Clair  49:23

This was born out of our happy hours, which we also will still be doing but as head Mistry we were feeling there was a distance and too much of a distance because what we started to realize is so many of our students are so good looking.

June Diane Raphael  49:39

You know, I see them.

Jessica St. Clair  49:41

And we want to see them in their bodies and we want to see them more specifically their body. We want to see them in their place of work. I mean, we’ve had people get on from bakeries here.

Jessica St. Clair  49:53

A Bundt cake bakery from a preschool I mean, from office, you know conference room, I want to see deep divers in their natural environment, we are like the Jane Goodall’s of the deep dive, then this is why we are an enter coursework is going to be born as as it is, it is out of our lives, but we’re going to be bringing people on live to see their pool.

June Diane Raphael  49:53

Everywhere.

June Diane Raphael  50:19

And that’s right. And we’re going to be discussing and further detail with you all these episodes, which will be so much fun, we’d love to talk about itineraries, we’d love to talk about airport in times, but that’s going to be saved for the deeper dive, but Jess.

Jessica St. Clair  50:35

Join us ahead of time only because if you want to join us now at The Deep Dive Academy, you will have all the lessons for the past since that’s July to catch up on and, and certainly it’s not mandatory.

June Diane Raphael  50:48

But it is encouraged.

Jessica St. Clair  50:50

You get yourself in shape, you know, you don’t start running a marathon, you know, out of nowhere, you haven’t ever run a light, you know, we will want you to have a red lip if you can.

June Diane Raphael  51:00

Just to debut for us. But so to just to speak about the some of the post production, what’s been done in post, and how Jessica and I have crude up crude up at the academy. So we are now filming ourselves. And like true content creators, we are editing ourselves. And I just will say I didn’t even notice this on one video I posted a few weeks ago, you couldn’t read the title cards and like it’s taking everything in me not to redo it and repost it because I had him in a different framework, and I’m like.

Jessica St. Clair  51:39

No, listen. This is wabi sabi and was one of our shops, you know it took you to my bar met the class, one of our shots was literally directly up my vagina. I’m sitting there. You look shoot me. I knew you were the camera. […]

June Diane Raphael  51:56

Did I did I know not to send that to you for approval first?

Jessica St. Clair  52:00

You didn’t, and I thought boy, that’s but that’s what you’re getting in the academy is really some raw unfiltered looks at what we’re up to.

June Diane Raphael  52:08

But why I will say not to toot my own horn editor. But usually, but Jess.

Jessica St. Clair  52:14

I, you’re like the Farrelly brothers found, female content.

June Diane Raphael  52:19

I have found your colleagues about something now again, takes me a bit of time, although I do feel like I’m gonna get done quicker. And one sec, eally Jess, I didn’t want to walk you in conversation. But I do feel like for deep divers, it’s important. It’s important actually, for me to share because this is a skill set I have never touched down on ever. It’s an I am cultivating it. And I do that excites me because we think we know everything at this point in our lives or we’ve done everything we could and I’m like, oh, maybe there’s still a little meat on the bone over here.

Jessica St. Clair  53:02

Listen, you’re a Cornish game hen honey, and you’re just we’re just nibbling away at some tiny morsels of meat here and we’re getting some succulent pieces because I was so impressed. I am and I have to learn. You know, for me for an ADHD person to sit down and watch tutorials on a fucking editing thing. It’s my worst nightmare, but I am gonna live. Oh, God,

June Diane Raphael  53:22

Let me ask you about that.

Jessica St. Clair  53:24

You know, I’ve been editing on my phone.

June Diane Raphael  53:27

Okay, well, that’s probably.

Jessica St. Clair  53:30

Too scared to open the computer, but we’re gonna get there. And I have to do one. I’m actually going. This afternoon, I’m going to walk the dogs that Wags and Walks. And I’m going to be filming Uncle Josh and I and BB are going just to film all the different dogs and encourage all of our Academy members to be giving back to animals in whatever way they can. So I have to edit that. So don’t expect all the bells and whistles for me yet, but boy, boy, June, you really. You’ve uncovered something in yourself. You’re like a Francis Ford Coppola of, of Instagram.

June Diane Raphael  54:04

It’s just nice to know. It’s just nice to know. And I’m so shocked that you don’t like watching these YouTube tutorials. I mean, I’ve also just recently taught myself how to play hearts, all via YouTube tutorials. And I love it for us. It’s all there for us literally late. Everything is available via YouTube tutorial.

Jessica St. Clair  54:26

But it’s this thing that we think, well again, stem girls can’t do math, but it’s this thing where we say like, oh, we have to pay somebody to do this. But here’s the thing, pay somebody that’s money out your own pocket. And I’ve been trying to really set my sights on my goals and it involves keeping some of the money in the pocket or you’re never gonna get there. And so sometimes the things now when it comes to coloring our own hair, that’s something we should outsource there’s low there’s lots of be outsource. But there’s lots of things we can learn. And and as women, especially because I really think I said to myself, well, that kind of electronics is for someone else to learn.

June Diane Raphael  55:14

I, that’s why I.

Jessica St. Clair  55:16

And you push me June you push not forced me, I didn’t want to do it. I still don’t want to do it.

June Diane Raphael  55:22

I know you.

Jessica St. Clair  55:22

I dread it, I dread it but I know, I know that if I push past that fear, I’m gonna love it.

June Diane Raphael  55:30

Well, first of all, please take it to desktop.

Jessica St. Clair  55:33

I’m going to try. But the YouTube tutorial that I saw the only one I could force myself to watch for five minutes, he did it on his phone. So I was just no there. But it’s impossible.

June Diane Raphael  55:46

It’s impossible. And it’s like, there’s programs now that are so intuitive that are so user friendly. Like, it’s just like, what I mean, please come on as a sponsor, I’ll sing your praises forever, but it’s just like it is. Absolutely, you know, like, you can figure it out.

Jessica St. Clair  56:05

I consiting time because.

June Diane Raphael  56:07

It’s an exciting time.

Jessica St. Clair  56:08

We cannot be entrepreneurs. It’s exciting. I think actually about all of these people have all sorts of things to say about Instagram influencers and all this I don’t, because I don’t.

June Diane Raphael  56:20

I mean, I have if I can tip my hat.

Jessica St. Clair  56:22

I tip my hat you’re making your bag out there like I tip my hat. I really do, and it’s like nobody’s forcing me to buy the gadget you found on it’s on Amazon you know, but now I have a gadget that I can pump up and a lever that allows me to slip a rug under my under my bed and I was able to find that in purchase it.

June Diane Raphael  56:49

I saw one of the questions and I would love to have an influencer on it specifically an Amazon finds influencer because yes, Floyd are they finding things like sometimes I’m like wait, how are you even like what are you searching like how are you finding this?

Jessica St. Clair  57:05

I don’t know they must order and I feel like Paul is just gonna jump away from there. Because he has like whenever you show up to June’s door and and I know Amazon is the devil but there’s piles it’s like it’s Christmas.

June Diane Raphael  57:19

Shopping addiction. I know.

Jessica St. Clair  57:21

Yeah, He does but but you know I do appreciate also these people going out there like for instance you know one of my favorite things to do is look for resort wear for life. I don’t frankly have but I love that there’s these finds of like a cover up you never thought Abby Arad are stylish. She’s always finding, you know, gold hoops like, you buy my tech pack.

June Diane Raphael  57:47

I love her finds. And if you haven’t signed up for her newsletter, your stylist says I highly recommend it because she does. She does and it’s a lot of high low stuff. So you can find stuff that’s affordable and then save for the splurges. But like she’s she curates a great list.

Jessica St. Clair  58:03

But you know, what’s great too, is that women and this is what I love about the academy. Women love to share information with each other. It’s what we do best and.

June Diane Raphael  58:13

And how we survived. Boy boy, was there some drama that went down for the volleyball League, because we went in to get our picks, and we were just going to have our same team together. They’re all friends. And one of the dads came hard at us and said, This is a draft. And I’m here to win. And we were like what? I thought what the fuck is wrong with some men? I’m like, what are you doing? But then a mom named Sam slammed him down so hard I’ve never seen it was so scary. This mom was so scary that he backed down. But I’m like, you know, like women aren’t like that. We’re like, let’s share, let’s share what we have with each other I hope but that’s what I feel like those low light situation

June Diane Raphael  59:00

Were there is that teams were getting blown out to such a degree that they need.

Jessica St. Clair  59:04

This and are we rushing people? Yes […]

June Diane Raphael  59:09

I am sort of siding with.

Jessica St. Clair  59:12

Yeah, is it embarrassing sometimes?

June Diane Raphael  59:14

Yeah, so he had a great point. Yeah, he’s silenced now. So I guess he won’t be able to make it. Jess, I’m so excited to launch our new After Show more on that in the coming weeks. It’s going to be so great. And wish me luck. I’m gonna send you the I 10 I’d love you to throw some comments in anyway.

Jessica St. Clair  59:37

You have you probably won’t listen because you do like to be in charge. But I will give you so I’m London.

June Diane Raphael  59:43

I mean, again, I’m really only trying to plan one thing a day with children. I feel like that’s.

Jessica St. Clair  59:48

I love for you to go to the Museum of London, which is actually a place that not a lot of people think of you think of the British Museum, etc. But the Museum of London is really cool. It’s the history of London I would skip the plague that shit scared the fuck out of so.

June Diane Raphael  1:00:03

That’s what I want us that’s what I want to.

Jessica St. Clair  1:00:05

But Gus will probably love it and Sam definitely will but like we went with our my friend Bill but Ben will bond most attractive British actor on the planet and his children and they were just like baby you will see the play and then like dragged but that’s a great one anyway have lots of tips and tricks.

June Diane Raphael  1:00:27

Yeah, okay great. Deep divers love you so much for those of you are heading on spring break have a wonderful holiday yeah, wherever if it’s us home or wherever. Just enjoy the time and Jess I love you so much.

Jessica St. Clair  1:00:41

I love you friend, okay have a safe travels.

June Diane Raphael  1:00:43

Thank you so much talk to you soon. Bye guys.

We are up to some pretty kooky stuff over here we have got lessons in the culinary arts. We have field trips, June forced me to go on a three mile run lesson and maybe most importantly, we have Friday happy hours. Okay, at four we pour. We have been having the most fun drinking and interacting with our students getting to know quite frankly we are getting to know each and every one of our students intimately. And the thing I love the most about it June is the community and the cheerleading that is going on. We have women sharing their dating pics, they’re asking for opinions on their hinge profiles. I mean it is just so it’s so much fun and it’s exactly what makes women special holding each other accountable and cheering each other on.
