SPEAKERS

SuChin Pak, Kulap Vilaysack

SuChin Pak  00:03

Guys, this is Add to Cart. I’m taking over just the top because Kulap is nibbling on an apple as if her life depended on it today is one of those days. Neither one of us knows what’s going to happen on this show. And those are the kinds of shows I love. Usually Kulap, is in control. And I am not here and she’s texting me where are you and today the tables have flipped.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:25

It 100% flipped and yet she will not surrender as much as she is a mess. And this is your auntie Kulap Vilaysack co host of Aadd To Cart here shoot, I will still attempt to grasp at the moving target which is control. And the tension of that hopefully will be entertaining to you guys and also to SuChin Pak.

SuChin Pak  02:46

It’s already like I may have to switch my shirt in the middle of it. I’m sweating, so freakin hard. I’m on such like Level Nine of menopause. It’s just my body temperature is it’s unpredictable. But besides what’s going on with my body, Ku, you just shared some jaw dropping things. I was like, let’s just record this.

Kulap Vilaysack  03:10

I have to hit record.

SuChin Pak  03:11

The hell is going on with you over there in that gorgeous moody office of yours.

Kulap Vilaysack  03:16

Look, to I live a great life, it’s grant. But it’s Louise here, strap yourself in, let’s room room.

SuChin Pak  03:30

That should be the title of every parenting book. It should start with Thelma and Louise and then the subtitle, whatever your particular angle is. Because at some point, everyone gets there. Everyone gets in that convertible and looks at the edge of the club and says today’s the day.

Kulap Vilaysack  03:49

Precipice, now Su, I’m going to word salad at you and you’re going to select what you want to know more about, okay, let me word salad things that are happening. So pre Miami a couple days before so now at this point, folks. It’s been many weeks, three weeks at this point by the time this recording. I hope you’re listening to it. I hope it’s over. I hope it’s over because I’ve had a chronic nosebleed. Yes, I’ve been to the ER yes, I’m trying to get an EMT. They can’t see me for weeks and weeks. Yes, I’m calling every day see if I can come in to do something to cauterize me. I went to the ER they said they didn’t want you. I’m sure we’ll get back, we’ll swing back to that. We’ll swing back to the bleeding. Scott David document husband, friend of the show, former guest future guest has finally gotten a foot surgery from when we played pickleball with Casey Casper husband. The conclusion is he’s in a boot for two weeks, and we’ll be doing PT after that. The upshot of that is that he can’t carry the baby down the stairs, walk the dogs. It’s things like that, okay, there’s that. All right, what else? Madog Georgia, the brown one. Friday, she got all five teeth pulled doing dental cleaning, and then while we were there she was under. So let’s just check out what these little bumps are cut off some warts. So she’s got a colon for two weeks.

SuChin Pak  05:19

Oh no, I hate that cone.

Kulap Vilaysack  05:21

Got a poor cone.

SuChin Pak  05:22

That cone will take me off into the sunset.

Kulap Vilaysack  05:26

Into the sunset into the sunset.

SuChin Pak  05:27

I hate those damn cones, okay, go on.

Kulap Vilaysack  05:30

Friday, 4:59, five o’clock is when my my wonderful beloved nanny Paloma was like hey, can I get Monday off? It’s my birthday wish I knew I knew that already was I was gonna prepare cake you know I got that on lock, which is all fine dandy. I can take care of my kid. It’s fine except 10:30 this morning we got to do a swim lesson so here I am in the pool gotta get everything ready basically by myself with with an assist from Scott I’m not saying that he’s that I’m single parenting but I think you’re reading between the lines.

SuChin Pak  06:01

You’re boot parenting, yeah, your boot parenting and then you have this record for who knows how long so you got to prep everything right? For in your four year absence. I don’t know who is with the child as.

Kulap Vilaysack  06:14

The child right now. I had said about lunch and then I said I pieced out and I slowly backed away. I’m what headed right now SuChin, and rightfully was like okay, bump up the filter in your zoom slap on some lipstick here we go, here we go. Do the workforce right tech No, no, you morning consisted of waking up taking the dogs out. Giving the dog medication holding the dog’s food so because the cone so hard to take on and off holding it while she eats, then you got to nosebleed then you bled for about 35 minutes. A lot of bleeding, then you got to get the baby ready. Then he got the duck. Anyways, I’m repeating myself SuChin, though that’s the word salad, we could also leave it there if you’d like.

SuChin Pak  06:56

No, I don’t want to leave it there but I’m interested in two things. First thing I’m interested in is this nose grain situation. What the hell is going on?

Kulap Vilaysack  07:06

As a kid I got a lot of nosebleeds. I’ll say that so I’m not not okay, so understand that, I’m also familiar with nosebleeds and how extraordinary this moment in time has been of how excessive and consistent these nosebleeds have been has it? That’s what really shocks me. My therapist says that 40s are the humbling decade. And It shocks me at how delicate I’ve become because they don’t understand it. I’ve been such a tank for most of my life, and I still feel I could take in yet. Blood is dripping down my face.

SuChin Pak  07:40

No, you’re in your orchid era. Ah, come on in, come on into the tightly sealed coffin vacuum.

Kulap Vilaysack  07:47

Yeah.

SuChin Pak  07:48

I try to put myself in, every day straight, it’s so delicate. And I’m not trying to make this about me but, not too long ago, we talked about this thing on my foot. And I said I was just gonna give it a vinegar bath till it went away. It went away. Anyway, thanks, Sam B though for your concern. I’ll let you know if I need to ring you back. And I’m not saying the way I do things in life. You shouldn’t do it. There’s never a point. I hope it’s very clear on this podcast, I never promote this as something that I recommend for other people. It’s how I’ve arrived here. My particular sense of traumas, neurotic tendencies is it’s this is a very particular sense […] You can’t live this. You can’t live this nine and I’m not asking you to. But this is why I don’t go to the doctor. Because, yeah, you go. No answers or it’s a full time job trying to chase down a an appointment.

Kulap Vilaysack  08:56

That’s exactly where I find myself in having started a notes on my phone. That’s called a nosebleed log. Just because I was like shocked at how many times I’ve been bleeding. So this is pre Miami. During Miami.

SuChin Pak  09:13

You were bleeding in Miami?

Kulap Vilaysack  09:14

I was bleeding in Miami too, and then I returning and then a couple days later, like a week later. I was like God, this is still happening and that day before 2pm I had like 30 minute nosebleeds four times.

SuChin Pak  09:31

Hmm.

Kulap Vilaysack  09:32

So calling my doctor he’s like you need to get cauterized. We need to find you an EMT. It takes months to see an EMT. And after the fourth bleed, I was like so do I go to urgent care? They’re like yeah, yeah, go go go go to urgent care. We don’t have cauterizing tools. You gotta go to e and t or go to the ER find myself at the ER.

SuChin Pak  09:51

Again once again, and they didn’t cauterize it?

Kulap Vilaysack  09:54

By the time I got to the ER I wasn’t bleeding any looked at my nose. He’s like I wouldn’t suggest Is it? It’s painful, it could traumatize the area. And I then joke to him, I made a joke. I go, oh yeah when it really started bleeding in Miami was after Matt McConkey made me go into the cold plunge. And then he was like dunk your head. So it ducked my head, felt the rash of a cold plunge in Miami at the standard Hotel and Spa, then walked away from it. And a server was like your nose bleeding. And my first thought was, oh, I hope he doesn’t think that I do cocaine. Like I was so worried. It’s like, oh, I’m in Miami. I’m doing cocaine.

SuChin Pak  10:35

You’re in Miami. You’re dressed for Miami.

Kulap Vilaysack  10:39

I’m in a bathing suit. Yeah, photos.

SuChin Pak  10:43

And so I’m just saying you look like you were doing it. But you’re not.

Kulap Vilaysack  10:47

Yes, exactly, so then I talked to I tell the story and joke to the ER doctor. And he said, actually, cocaine would help the situation. And we have cocaine here that I can give to you. And I was like, huh, but?

SuChin Pak  11:05

I mean, only in frickin LA. Are you going to the ER and they’re offering cocaine? Unbelievable.

Kulap Vilaysack  11:13

We’re talking talking, he brings it up again. And I am such a like, you guys know that I do. shrooms, I don’t do weed, because it doesn’t suit me for whatever reason. But I felt like I felt like such like he would bring it up or the aversion to it. And I also felt like, am I being entrapped right now? I was like, no, I don’t want cocaine […]

SuChin Pak  11:37

Nope, okay and thank you for the second time.

Kulap Vilaysack  11:38

It was like, Yeah, I can prescribe it for you, it would really help. Or I can give you this prescription for a spray. I’m like, I’ll take the spray. I’ll take the spray please.

SuChin Pak  11:49

With or without the cocaine.

Kulap Vilaysack  11:52

It’s so interesting that the problem can be the cure, like wow, I had no idea. Nor did I know that this could be prescribed at Kaiser Permanente on Sunset. But also, I’m taking care of a one and a half year old. So even if it stops the bleeding. What am I? Can you even imagine? I don’t know.

SuChin Pak  12:15

Grinding your jaw holding your daughter. This is this is I don’t know what to say about this.

Kulap Vilaysack  12:22

Su since then, over a week later, they the spray helps. But I’m still bleeding when I am gently washing my face. When I am walking the dog when I am like it’s nothing. I’m doing nothing, I’m not blowing my nose. I’m not doing anything. It’s not dry. It also, the only time that I feel bad was one having a sop up blood. And when it comes in the back of the throat and I just spit it out. Two oh, all the time. It’s disgusting, that’s how much blood that’s annoying, especially last week when it starts bleeding. 10 minutes before I have a general meeting. And I have to push it. And I wish it was a person who can’t bring it up and can take 10 minutes of that meeting to talk. And I’m not I’m just not that person. I have to talk about it. Anyways, it’s just it’s very annoying. I I’m calling a bunch of agencies. The first the first one I called through like June 15. I’m hoping it will go away on its own but it has not it has not such an it has not.

SuChin Pak  13:26

God and life felt so bad about my footwork last week. You are just having one of those weeks, man. I we’re gonna get into it about my my girls trip with my daughter, but one of the things was I and I’ve said this before, I’m like moving every year more into my era as a parent. Because when I think back of years one through eight of child rearing, it’s like a dark curtain is just always about to go down on it like, like, I don’t even want to remember how like, hectic, traumatizing, just emotionally scarring. It was for me, and I’m not saying that it is for you. I’m just saying it’s not whatever level of difficulty or whatever level of difficulty it is. For whoever, it’s so hard. And we live a life of privilege.

Kulap Vilaysack  14:34

Absolutely.

SuChin Pak  14:35

High childcare, this second I brought my kid home. And I still was so severely depressed and anxious.

Kulap Vilaysack  14:43

Trust that I think about like, you know what my mom went through and especially in a new country and and just not you know, not having help. And of course these things come up. Think about it.

SuChin Pak  14:54

Yeah, and here we are you guys speaking of our mothers and where we’re from nn Mother’s day after that preamble, it’s mother’s days around the corner we talked about it today is our big kickoff for we’ve got we’ve got two big moments in our podcasts that we really liked just go hard you know we just full on speed into Christmas is one of them. Kulap, your Christmas season starts in about three months.

Kulap Vilaysack  15:22

Yeah, let’s take a one minute pause and play Jingle Bells.

SuChin Pak  15:26

No.

Kulap Vilaysack  15:35

Mariah Carey, All I Want For Christmas Is You.

SuChin Pak  15:43

July last year. That was, that’s it. I cannot move that. I speak for the other people on the conference call. Who do not want to speak up? I have to put my foot down for the conference callers, July we cannot do any Christmas stuff until July.

Kulap Vilaysack  16:03

Only gonna let it go because we have so much to talk about in this episode.

SuChin Pak  16:07

Yes, and then and then the second time of the year we go hard is this month. We have really big guests lined up which is fun. We’ve got Auntie Book Clubs. You guys like we’re just tap dancing over here. But in some ways we’re already celebrating.

Kulap Vilaysack  16:26

Because today is a […].

SuChin Pak  16:28

Every day is a [..] for us. Number two to toot. We are number one podcast in our category. I’m not even going to say the category the category is the world.

Kulap Vilaysack  16:42

I mean.

SuChin Pak  16:43

Number one podcast.

Kulap Vilaysack  16:44

I can look at my phone now and I don’t know. I mean do you want me to see if we doesn’t matter?

SuChin Pak  16:48

No, no, shush. I already have the screenshot. At some point, we were number one podcast in our category which is the world I’m not gonna gloss over it. Because we are five freakin years into this and to have to have gotten there with this team with these the this just workhorse of a team. And here we are here and so I just I just want to say there’s a lot going on in this episode. There’s gonna be a ton coming up this month, which we’re excited for. I’m already tired for but tired for in a good way. And then of course we have your birthday.

Kulap Vilaysack  17:28

Wow, surely a national holiday if I’ve ever heard one.

SuChin Pak  17:32

I hope it’s not a bhoot birthday.

Kulap Vilaysack  17:34

I gotta say. The truth is it’s a low key birthday. It’s a low key birthday. Okay, low key birthday.

SuChin Pak  18:41

Why?

Kulap Vilaysack  18:41

It just I don’t know.

SuChin Pak  18:42

There’s so much going.

Kulap Vilaysack  18:44

Yes, you’re gonna laugh I say low key birthday. And then when I tell you what I’m going to actually do on my birthday.

SuChin Pak  19:17

Let’s get into it, baby.

SuChin Pak  19:33

Okay, let’s get that out of the way.

Kulap Vilaysack  20:37

All right, now SuChin Pak.

SuChin Pak  21:08

Yeah.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:08

A little bit of a preamble.

SuChin Pak  21:10

Okay,

Kulap Vilaysack  21:11

A couple weeks ago, I finally got to do what Scott got me for Christmas which is the falconry private sector. Why are you laughing?

SuChin Pak  21:25

Why fucking specific to you that that is looking at you, your nipples are hard.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:30

That’s right.

SuChin Pak  21:31

You just like there’s like a gleam in your eye for Falcon.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:36

Yeah, they’re so high right now that I beg for a Falcon to land on them. That’s how hard to put her on. My nips, SuChin Pak, would you ever do this?

SuChin Pak  21:50

No. I mean, the fact that you suggested I’m offended.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:55

I just checking double checking, hey, Scott gave it to me. It was the weekend after his boot and he could not attend. So I went with some of my besties tall John Schrader, Kevin Sesha and friend of the show former guests future guests Matt McConkey.

SuChin Pak  21:55

And we had that time of our lives.

Kulap Vilaysack  22:00

Su the fucking guy’s hot though would you.

Kulap Vilaysack  22:06

Think that doesn’t when I tell you a hot guy registers so fucking long my list of motivated after.

Kulap Vilaysack  22:32

Because I did barely noticed what he looked like because I was so enamored with Archie The Barn Owl, Jasper the Harris ha. And I can’t remember her name right now but she was an agar buzzard. She was so big and aggressive that we couldn’t fire so I didn’t really commune with her as much but she’s gorgeous. Gorgeous, I tell you, and we put a, put a little bit of like rabbit meat onto the onto you holding on to it and then you raise your gloved hand and they come right at you. They swoop right at you SuChin Pak, now I noticed that Kevin and Matt all wear sunglasses.

SuChin Pak  23:08

I should just say I was they don’t give you safety goggles.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:10

No, I was wide open clear, I clear hearts catch.

SuChin Pak  23:17

Out because juicy balls out for the prey.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:20

I’m communing with the Falcons.

SuChin Pak  23:24

I mean, thank God you didn’t bust out with the nosebleed and they smelled the you know.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:30

The sharks.

SuChin Pak  23:31

The blush.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:34

[…] Yeah, they are.

SuChin Pak  23:36

Birds of prey.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:37

That agar buzzard almost got a squirrel while we’re at Deb’s National Park. I wish he got the squirrel. So now I tell you that and I want to do that immediately again. Before Mariah starts singing. I will do it again.

SuChin Pak  23:52

Are there like voice commands?

Kulap Vilaysack  23:54

I mean, I don’t have them. But the Harris Hawk atom could shine a light like a laser light at like a branch she would fly there and then I could lift my hand and give her her bloody meat.

SuChin Pak  24:07

And what about this activity just tickles your nips?

Kulap Vilaysack  24:11

They’re amazing majestic beasts. They’re beautiful, SuChin you indoor kid.

SuChin Pak  24:19

They’re […] are the stuff of like people and blazing them upon national flags.

Kulap Vilaysack  24:25

They sing to them.

SuChin Pak  24:26

And again things on national flags so low on my list of motivating factors, my balloon.

Kulap Vilaysack  24:34

This is this is related. This is of the same bucket of what I’ve decided to do on my birthday. So originally, I was gonna go to out of town. Something happened and workout so back to square one. What am I doing dragging my feet don’t really want to do so much and then I just happened upon this thing, went well. I had heard of wolf connection.

Kulap Vilaysack  25:00

Oh no. Are you doing something with wolves last season?

Kulap Vilaysack  25:04

SuChin?

SuChin Pak  25:04

Oh.

Kulap Vilaysack  25:05

Well yes, Suchin.

SuChin Pak  25:08

No, and is this what this Lincoln wolf connection actually I thought it was gonna be like a sweatshirt brand.

Kulap Vilaysack  25:14

Nope, on the day of my birthday, I shall be doing a day long workshop. It’s called a Woman And Wolves. Hit that link to tell the people what I’m going to be doing with my friend Laura kindred.

SuChin Pak  25:28

She’s going to be doing wolf therapy keep going. A Woman And Wolves 2024 day retreat inspired by wisdom of wolves. The wolf breeds in the beauty of every moment embracing this space that feels like slow. Wait, what the hell, we hope you’ll join us from one of our most popular programs. This is a day long journey where we unlock as a pack in our immersive women and wolves program deep within the high desert. We engage in rituals and activities. While we ale there’s while there’s there’s going to be wolves.

Kulap Vilaysack  26:13

Yeah, it’s in the name.

SuChin Pak  26:15

Oh my god. So you’re you guys are going to be.

Kulap Vilaysack  26:19

Going up to the forest. Probably an hour and a half drive. And then you’re going to be hiking and chillin and talking about our feelings with wolves.

SuChin Pak  26:28

No, Tiffany, she just texted, are they real wolves or dogs? No, these are wolves.

Kulap Vilaysack  26:33

Because it helped that they’re mainly wolf dogs.

SuChin Pak  26:36

Are they wolf dogs because they look like wolves. But a wolf dogs.

Kulap Vilaysack  26:40

There’s a lot of Wolf and those down.

SuChin Pak  26:43

Wolf, I hope that you are not bleeding.

Kulap Vilaysack  26:47

I aswell, hope that I.

SuChin Pak  26:50

When you were coming?

Kulap Vilaysack  26:51

As well hope that.

SuChin Pak  26:56

Oh, Lord have mercy. So you’re going to, I love that this is low key for you.

Kulap Vilaysack  27:01

Okay, this is this isn’t a party. This is it, you know, this? Isn’t that? Oh, yeah, this is me. Well, it’s a party. It’s in some way. It’s a wolf party. Some might say that.

SuChin Pak  27:14

And so you’re going to commune with the wolves and get in touch with this, this Huntress.

Kulap Vilaysack  27:20

And it’d be in the forest. The Wolf Connection Ranch, the Wolf Hart Ranch, something like 100 plus acres in the Los Angeles forest.

SuChin Pak  27:29

So you’ve got birds of prey, you’ve got wolves. Like I see this trend very clearly. And am I gonna hear from one of your friends? That maybe a year from now as your spear hunting in the free diving in the ocean that you have lost a limb? Or is this where this is going? Are you are you ice climbing?

Kulap Vilaysack  27:53

Well, here’s the tough thing. You know, the thing about me and nature, I do love it. And I love to camp.

SuChin Pak  28:00

And by camping.

Kulap Vilaysack  28:01

I mean, I love to glamp and by glamping I mean the four seasons that hopefully you hear some one tree.

SuChin Pak  28:12

You are both. You are both the butler service in Rome.

Kulap Vilaysack  28:17

Yes.

SuChin Pak  28:18

And you are this majestic woman of prey? That will bite your head off and eat it for lunch.

Kulap Vilaysack  28:27

So don’t you see that I too am a wolf dog. Both wild and domesticated. Don’t you see that this is the perfect place for me to be on my birthday. Where I turn 43 or 42 I don’t know.

SuChin Pak  28:43

Wow, that’s um, that is that is your version of lowkey birthday. I once again I bow down on my knees. Hands raised. Hands raised. I bow down.

Kulap Vilaysack  28:59

That’s uh, that’s what’s happening.

SuChin Pak  29:00

I cannot I just, be safe. And I can’t wait to see the photos.

Kulap Vilaysack  29:08

Yeah, because the thing you know, they’ve made very clear is that self service cell service is not spotty up there.

SuChin Pak  29:16

Oh, God, don’t make me come out of my balloon to rescue your mangled body. Please don’t do that. I mean, I will but I’m going to be mad when I get there. Like every right.

Kulap Vilaysack  29:31

As is your right.

SuChin Pak  29:32

No, you were you were never more in trouble with an old Asian woman than when you get sick or injured. Hell hath no fury look.

Kulap Vilaysack  29:42

I don’t want it to happen. But if that’s the situation, then I hope that.

SuChin Pak  29:47

No, oh, I don’t have to listen to oh, what a birthday. Let’s just close your eyes and blow baby.

Kulap Vilaysack  30:01

It’s our favorite time of the year everyone. It’s AAPI Heritage Month but it lines up perfectly with another one of our favorite moments this year. Rack attends Big Give week.

SuChin Pak  30:12

Coincidence? I think no, I don’t think so they know what’s what, this entire week is a celebration of shopping. God, I love saying that. Which is what we’re here to do guys on Add to Cart. So get on it, you can get 15% cashback on hundreds of stores that’s double digits. Okay. It’s so easy to use. While you’re shopping. You’re also saving and that’s that’s the auntie promise.

Kulap Vilaysack  30:43

That’s right. Rakuten continues to be the shopping platform to use so you can save while shopping. You can download their app or browser extension to use on your computer. I use the app because it’s so easy to browse for anything you’re looking for store by store. So if I’m getting a new makeup or blush, I’ll actually go into the racket an app, pull up the Ulta store and shop as I normally do. I know it sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t Rakuten magically deposits that cashback straight into your PayPal account.

SuChin Pak  31:14

That’s correct. I mean, I love I’m gonna do a coffee table book on our Rakuten saving screenshots because that’s what we do. I mean, does it not ring your bell?

Kulap Vilaysack  31:25

Thank you for putting it so succinctly.

SuChin Pak  31:27

And big give week is just a huge celebration because like I say, you can earn fifth teen percent cashback at hundreds of stores. So we are talking stores that you are already shopping at. So why not get cashback I’m talking about stores like Dyson, Adidas, Alta, you know, I go hard at the dermstore during this week 15% cashback on all my serums my syrup’s my moisturizers. We’re entering travel season, this is the perfect timing. So you’re planning your summer vacation, you could be shopping rocket 10 and actually getting cash back on booking those trips this week.

Kulap Vilaysack  32:25

SuChin Pak  32:37

Now let me tell you what’s in my recommend shopping cart. Merit Beauty. I mean premium.

Kulap Vilaysack  32:44

Okay, oh good, so good.

SuChin Pak  32:45

This is a brand we have talked about on the show. I love this brand. Do you know why? Because they have five minute makeup looks. And you can do them with your little fingertips. You get a little dab dab dab the it’s so easy. There sticks. There’s little pots. You don’t need any fancy equipment to get fresh. Do we Lux my favorite is the blush. Have you tried the blush and it’s like this little tiny, almost like dome thing and you just rub it on your cheeks on the apples of your cheeks and you just look like you’re young. You’re young and alive. I mean yeah, your eyeball juices are juicy. And I will be stocking up on all the colors this week and earning 15% cashback, thank you very much.

Kulap Vilaysack  33:33

If you haven’t tried Rakuten yet, this is the week to do it. Membership is free, and when you sign up and shop today you get an extra 10% cashback boost, that’s an extra 10% cashback on top of the 15% cashback. You won’t see higher cashback rates and these go to rakuten.com or download the Rakuten app, R A K U T E N shoppers get it?

Kulap Vilaysack  33:59

Okay, what are we missing? Are we ready to launch into a celebration of Asian, are we ready?

SuChin Pak  34:07

Every day all day, 24-7.

Kulap Vilaysack  34:10

We haven’t talked about this but I bet Sue and I do like at least a Add to Cart pod. Kind of rundown of our favorite AAPI brands. There’s so many amazing companies out there that are Asian American owned that are Asian owned. You know we love of course Goodlight we love Blue Land, but I wanted to kind of like what are some other stuff that perhaps we haven’t talked about or talked in depth about. Su, we haven’t really ever talked about Tower28 Beauty. I have tried the make waves mascara and jet black and I love it. It’s great, I’m a contact lens where it is waterproof.

SuChin Pak  34:52

Doesn’t smudge.

Kulap Vilaysack  34:53

There’s okay, all right. There’s a little bit of smudging. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. I mean, is this the time this A little bit of smudging for you might be a lot of smudges. Yeah, it’s yeah, it’s such a good mascara though. I say I say.

SuChin Pak  35:08

I know, I’ve heard of this mascara. But to be fair, I only so far out of all the mascaras that I’ve tried and I’ve tried dozens of them only one works for me. So I think it’s a very particular thing, it’s like my feet, I don’t think that this is the case for me.

Kulap Vilaysack  35:25

Right

SuChin Pak  35:25

So are you talking about don’t think that this is a high recommendation?

Kulap Vilaysack  35:28

Are you talking for you the two big one?

SuChin Pak  35:30

Yeah.

Kulap Vilaysack  35:31

Is that the one that works for you?

SuChin Pak  35:32

I mean, I’m not a big mascara wearin general. And so I’ve tried and did it a duck but I’ve worn a lot of mascara in my past life or and I used to get my face beat every day.

Kulap Vilaysack  35:43

True.

SuChin Pak  35:43

And so I’ve tried every mascara so what I found one that actually works and I just I’m just sticking with it.

Kulap Vilaysack  35:49

But since your iconic days of MTV, a lot of technology has showed up true that I don’t think there was tubing then. So SuChin, you know if you don’t have salmon lids like SuChin, and I say that with love and she’s the one who says it.

SuChin Pak  36:01

I receive it with love, yeah, especially from a woman of prey.

Kulap Vilaysack  36:06

I highly recommend the Tower28 Beauty make waves mascara.

SuChin Pak  36:10

Oh, by the way, they also Tower28 any of their lip glosses.

Kulap Vilaysack  36:15

Oh yeah.

SuChin Pak  36:16

I love love, love, love, love love and you get so much of it.

Kulap Vilaysack  36:19

Yes at the very end it’s a clean brand. Pair that if you dare with One Size ON ‘TIL DAWN MATTIFYING WATERPROOF SETTING spray.

SuChin Pak  36:30

This stuff.

Kulap Vilaysack  36:32

This this stuff okay, every everybody knows Patrick.

SuChin Pak  36:36

Legends are built on.

Kulap Vilaysack  36:37

He’s a legend Filipino American makeup artists influencer. He created this brand. Prove that makeup is one size fits all I first kind of got into the brand when a pass gas brought it up, and then have come to just like, love, love everything in this spray. Like that’s, you know, that’s what I took to Miami.

SuChin Pak  36:57

I mean, and when you took it to Miami, he tested, blood tested, human tested, stood through the test of all of those things.

Kulap Vilaysack  37:05

Yeah, yes, look, I wish that I could have sprayed it up my nose to set and Matt my Blair liquori.

SuChin Pak  37:11

This ER doctor, why not? I mean, when you’re at cocaine, I’d say this is a pretty clean choice. That ER doctor Let’s not mention is not down with his wrecks. Okay, go on.

Kulap Vilaysack  37:27

I can already picture myself in the future opening an email from Keegan going hey, should we do a disclaimer about, don’t take any adverse health advice from the autnies? And we’ll go yes, yes. And you should never ask us it should always be a disclaimer in our show description.

SuChin Pak  37:44

Yeah, you’re stupid if you think that that’s not the second title of this entire series. Like just get out of here call us into something else. Okay, go on.

Kulap Vilaysack  37:54

I love it, it’s so good. Now moving into things to put in your mouth. Off your favorite now in your mouth. Nam Coffee now SuChin, I know you’re not a coffee drinker but Nam Coffee is coffee in Vietnam. I first heard about it and tasted it at a cape event. bought a bag to grind myself and use and make coffee at home. They have a coffee shop in East Hollywood. I beg of you to go there those who drink coffee and order the decadent Vietnamese a coffee.

SuChin Pak  38:31

Wait, I have to see this Vietnamese egg coffee that link baby is there an egg?

Kulap Vilaysack  38:36

Egg Yolk.

SuChin Pak  38:37

Wait what?

Kulap Vilaysack  38:38

Tiffany’s like? It’s so good you can get this at any Vietnamese coffee shop but I’m calling out both Nam coffee and.

SuChin Pak  38:45

I never heard of it.

Kulap Vilaysack  38:47

It’s so rich and not you know if you’re Asian you know the the highest compliment to anything that is dessert or like is a too not too sweet. Not too sweet. It’s egg yolks on top frothed egg yolk.

SuChin Pak  39:01

Now are you egg yoking in your pants after?

Kulap Vilaysack  39:07

No, no.

SuChin Pak  39:09

I’m amazed how smooth.

Kulap Vilaysack  39:11

So smooth it’s so luscious and delicious.

SuChin Pak  39:15

You guys have to go to this Nam Coffee CO on the Instagram they do a little video tutorial of egg coffee and it looks like actual sex in your mouth does. Now this though this you tell you wave a shirtless 10 Pack falconry you know instructor in front of me snooze button. You put an icy creamy Yoky beverage in my mouth. I mean, raised from the dead. Yeah, move the tombstone.

Kulap Vilaysack  39:52

Here she is, it’s a miracle, and so happy and so thrilled full of life as she cuts it with some sparkling water.

SuChin Pak  40:00

That may just be what Nam needs. And guess what? You’re welcome, free business advice for that segment of the population you’re not hitting.

Kulap Vilaysack  40:09

I almost was going to do a list of just like these Asian influence that I followed and I made that might be my separate list Su, if you do the products, I’ll do products influencers, because there’s just so many great and funny ones. There’s a new SuChin, hot guy who does pottery. Yeah, he’s Thai. I know it’s new because if Su saw him I would have already seen her liking it so I know theater her.

SuChin Pak  40:37

Oh my god, that’s so embarrassing. Oh my god, I you know what? I just remember how Instagram works. Where you can see like it yeah, friends of yours liked a post in like your your exploratory, that is so embarrassing.

Kulap Vilaysack  40:56

Will Su, the algorithm is like it pushes it towards me because you liked it.

SuChin Pak  41:01

Oh, no, A my algorithm in my head is not for public consumption. I mean, I do everything from Yes, it gets my egg yolk creamy to man, this person is trying so hard. And we just got to keep on trying forever.

Kulap Vilaysack  41:20

Patronize you like.

SuChin Pak  41:22

Yeah, like I was sharing it like.

Kulap Vilaysack  41:25

From SuChin Pak.

SuChin Pak  41:27

I really wish I didn’t know this because I don’t want to change how I I do Instagram like nobody does Instagram and it is not meant for I need to come to Meta to give a class on how one person can also use Instagram. And I just it’s my own way, you know, and people are like, I message you. I’m like, maybe I’m on there. 24/7 but not in the way you think I am. There’s no way to get in touch with me. I don’t know how to get in touch with you. I just do what I like to do.

Kulap Vilaysack  41:59

Oh, I would like that TED talk. I do want to know how you go about this. I’m so intrigued.

SuChin Pak  42:06

I mean, it makes my packing look almost logical. You know? But anyway, oh, so Vietnamese coffee that’s news to me. Okay, a pan month. That’s news to me, all right. What else you got?

Kulap Vilaysack  42:20

My good friend chef saying Dong Daraa. Who you must follow him period. He’s he specializes in Lao food. And he has his own spice line called Laos Spices. And it’s fantastic. I really want to highlight the lob seasoning. Now once again, we’re gonna do allow PSA. For the folks out there who don’t know, the R is really soft. Okay, so not like in Spider Man where Marissa Tomi says larb now I get it, it’s tough that’s how it’s spelt larb that’s not it. Slop. Lop, it’s more like L A lathe and anything larb hurts my feelings, it hurts my ancestors. So now you know, and then we can all do better and move forward with lob, lob. And he has lab seizing that you can put on anything, and it’s.

SuChin Pak  43:20

What is lob seasoning what’s in it?

Kulap Vilaysack  43:21

Got proprietary blend that includes roasted, sticky rice powder, which that’s always pieces, like, among other things is like I’m not gonna have to wrote toast up some rice then I’m gonna have to there’s just like, the thing about laughs food it’s simple. But there’s so many ingredients, a much like Korean food to where you there’s so many ingredients that you have to prepare. But then the actual making is easy. But they’ve got all you know, the pre work all this pre work. And what I like about him is he knows how to make food traditionally. By the way, I didn’t even tell you this is that he does Lau foodie trips. And he’s done one before he’s going to do two this year.

SuChin Pak  44:03

Oh, yeah, this is who your did your mom go to go on when she’s going. She’s going in June.

Kulap Vilaysack  44:08

She’s called he’s actually going in June, it’s wild.

SuChin Pak  44:12

That’s wild, yeah.

Kulap Vilaysack  44:14

What I like about is the way that he cooks is very approachable for the Lao American, who I know you can meet, we all get these conversations about how you’re supposed to make things how you’re the right way to make Korean dishes is the right way to make Italian dishes. And everybody kind of has their own version. And it’s always like their grandmas or whatever so sometimes people get stuck in the weeds of like, you know, how you’re supposed to, but like, he does a great way of like, making it really accessible. And especially apt to in my opinion for the LAO American audience member or the American audience member. It’s way more approachable, it’s way more there’s a little bit more storytelling. It feels a little easier, and like to have the spice is taking it to the next level.

SuChin Pak  44:59

Especially have you live in areas where you don’t have an agent? I rely so heavily on these specialty like spice blends to cook Asian food because I am not getting any of this fresh stuff or even the spices on their own to mix on my own. You know what I mean? Like I rely so heavily on this to have the flavor of whatever Asian food I’m cooking so I love blends of spices.

Kulap Vilaysack  45:29

Su, the last like five years there’s so many like, that’s what’s so exciting so many different Asian spice blends, from powder blends to chili sauces, and we’re not going to step into the we don’t need to step into the Momofuku of it all. But I think it just is so exciting is just like, just the how how accessible and approachable. Many different Asian foods are, I think is not something that we grew up with.

Kulap Vilaysack  50:03

That’s my quick rundown Su, I mean, obviously throughout the month we’ll be talking about more things, but I just wanted to kinda, you know, get it going.

SuChin Pak  50:11

Thank you, God, despite all the hecticness you somehow still well did your fucking homework, Look at you.

Kulap Vilaysack  50:20

Want to get an A plus.

SuChin Pak  50:21

You Asian American gem, teacher’s pet.

Kulap Vilaysack  50:26

Extra credit.

SuChin Pak  50:27

That’s right with extra credit. So my cart is very simple. Number one, before we get into my card, though, I just want to a quick like, salute a nod to Zouk’s Cube, Episode 2.5 slash three if you guys haven’t heard very, again, always high demand. But what just continues to surprise me is the amount of freaky horny, insane people that come out in the comments and our DMS whenever this gorgeous beast comes onto our show. So many comments so many cubers not a lot of finger jammers. I have to say but, more so I would say this time around more finger jammers than there have been ever in the past. We’re moving towards a growing number. We’re never going to overtake the cubers. The cubers are there hardcore.

Kulap Vilaysack  51:27

I think part of those too is that now you have your own banner. We didn’t have the term finger jammers until this.

SuChin Pak  51:34

Yeah, but we we had lots of other things, zip lockers.

Kulap Vilaysack  51:38

This I think is something that more people can circle around, who knew?

SuChin Pak  51:45

Who knew that? That finger jamming was going to be the rallying cry.

Kulap Vilaysack  51:50

It’s a movement, yeah.

SuChin Pak  51:51

I knew, yeah. All right so speaking of birthdays, speaking of APAM month, I took my daughter on our first solo trip together. For her 10th birthday, we went to Mexico City.

Kulap Vilaysack  52:06

Mom of the year, fucking mom of the year.

SuChin Pak  52:09

And I learned a few things. My daughter is me. I am her, we are one. I know that people are like, well, I mean, that seems very common. But I am continually shocked because I’m not one of those moms who are like twinsies you know, whoever like matching shirts and ball. You know, I just was never that I was never even excited about. Do you know what I mean? Like having a girl that was like, kind of be my girl. You know what I mean? Like I just never had that.

Kulap Vilaysack  52:43

Real quick, can I just insert that? I added to cart and it has already arrived matching? Nike panda dunks for me and emerald.

SuChin Pak  52:52

By the way, you’ve been matching panda dunks with your your pooches your your little dog babies.

Kulap Vilaysack  52:59

Fair  enough.

SuChin Pak  53:00

Yeah, you just your mama, mama Hawk, Wolf. And I am continually personally surprised at that. When I see her growing up. I’m like, wow, this is I mean, I don’t know if it’s good.

Kulap Vilaysack  53:15

No, I think I think it’s great.

SuChin Pak  53:17

And so we went to Mexico City did we eat at a restaurant?

Kulap Vilaysack  53:20

No, you didn’t, not once. Not once.

SuChin Pak  53:25

And you know what? Kulap I’m trying to be so even handed and open the world up for her. Like I’m not trying to enforce my way of life on her because I don’t want her to live this life. I want her to live a full life and then come to this tight fisted Control Center at 50, like, I don’t need you here at 10 like, I bought tickets to a museum I bought tickets to the Frida Kahlo museum. I booked reservations at a restaurant. And I had to pull her into the museum. And the only reason I pulled so hard is because I prepaid for that right? Yeah, so I wasn’t gonna ask the tension there. I wasn’t gonna let her get but she really was like, really first day. I was like, oh my God. And then and then the dinner reservation was the next night and after the first day I was like, so we have this dinner reservation food is amazing. Do you want me to cancel it? And she said, yes. And so we never ate out, are we eating ordered in room service? We Uber Eats from a really lovely Vietnamese restaurant we found around the corner and just ate on towels. When I laid down a towel on my bed, and I looked over I couldn’t even take the picture. I was just in like. I just was in so much shock that this child was so happy to be eating on a hotel bed on top have a towel. I actually can’t take this picture because I don’t even know what I would do with this picture because it feels like I’m forcing my way. And yet this was of her of her own choice.

Kulap Vilaysack  55:12

Well, can I throw throw this in there? Like Mike would never let her do that at home?

SuChin Pak  55:18

No.

Kulap Vilaysack  55:18

That’s what it is. Then you make good because it’s like.

SuChin Pak  55:21

I hope so.

Kulap Vilaysack  55:22

It’s like, yeah, you can go out to eat in Santa Barbara, but what like, to me as a kid to get room service was like, whoa. Like, like, it was a very special thing. And it’s, you know, it’s so expensive. So it is like, oh my god, like, so, it’s in part that I think.

SuChin Pak  55:41

Yeah, but I mean, it’s in part that why I do that? Why I love it. You know? Do you think that Mike Flynn’s me?

Kulap Vilaysack  55:52

No, I we know about your sandwich, your sandwich. We know about that sound like a native sandwich.

SuChin Pak  55:59

So were there times I felt like I was just a credit card following around another human being just swiping as she was adding to cart furiously. I mean, this child, the amount of shopping like she did is the damage that she can do is all.

Kulap Vilaysack  56:19

Rivals you.

SuChin Pak  56:20

Oh, yeah. I don’t even don’t even compare.

Kulap Vilaysack  56:24

What a fucking dream mom of the year mom of the year. This is a dream trip. This is us guys. I hope it’s clear, it’s providing in a way that we didn’t receive.

SuChin Pak  56:32

No, it’s my Christmas Village. Who I say no, when a Ferris wheel pops up with animated music.

Kulap Vilaysack  56:40

Do you hate magic?

SuChin Pak  56:41

I don’t say no.

Kulap Vilaysack  56:42

Do you hate whimsy?

SuChin Pak  56:44

No. You pull out that card and you swipe and you know, she just had the time of her life.

Kulap Vilaysack  56:52

Only want to hear and want to hear.

SuChin Pak  56:54

Yeah, she had the time of her life. She got home the first night so we get home and just burst into tears.

Kulap Vilaysack  57:02

No.

SuChin Pak  57:03

Because she just like the magic. She couldn’t let go of the magic. And you know had the time of her life. And I do have to say as of now, I think she’s a Cuber.

Kulap Vilaysack  57:15

How how so you provided her cubes. How could you possibly be?

SuChin Pak  57:20

Well, I don’t have cubes per se. But I do have you know containers bags.

SuChin Pak  57:26

Yeah, we know but you are if anything? You are a bag lady, yes.

Kulap Vilaysack  57:30

She doesn’t know about the cubes. But I think once she finds out that cubes exists, she’s not looking back. But just watching her pack watching her sort of keep track of her things. She did not want I mean just her rules in her head about what what where and how uncomfortable she was with some of my choices, just finger jamming things books with toothbrushes like none of that was okay with her and it just didn’t sit well with her and I just thought wow like I may be raising a cube or so I’m just putting that out there.

Kulap Vilaysack  58:02

Well you know what that’s the thing about genetics. That’s where Mike Bender shines through.

SuChin Pak  58:08

Oh god I forgot about yeah, so that that was it in that was my cart.

Kulap Vilaysack  58:15

Wow.

SuChin Pak  58:16

I just yeah, I just had I had a really great time.

Kulap Vilaysack  58:19

Awe, SuChin, my heart.

SuChin Pak  58:27

Yeah, after after that van trip.

Kulap Vilaysack  58:31

I know, I listened to a recent deep dive and I got called out for my travel style by Miss June Diane Raphael.

SuChin Pak  58:39

What do you mean? She’s not butlering in Rome? I find that very hard to.

Kulap Vilaysack  58:43

No, the conversation is about travel times she and Danielle and like a St. Clairl, they want that first flight there early risers they’re gonna get on a 6am flight. I’m just never going to do that. That’s not who I am.

SuChin Pak  58:57

No.

Kulap Vilaysack  58:58

And she’ll call it amateur hour and I call it at the end of the day. We all have different styles of travel. Okay, travel. And so that’s what it is. It’s like, as we get more in our Auntie ages and our mommy ages and our human ages, we just settle into who we are and know what works for us. And there isn’t a lot of flexibility. I’m not saying that we can all cooperatively travel. I’m just saying we have to respect what people like and they’re going to show up when they show up. However they show up.

SuChin Pak  59:37

Absolutely.

Kulap Vilaysack  59:37

For one another because we all have different personalities.

SuChin Pak  59:41

That’s right, and we’re too old to change and.

Kulap Vilaysack  59:45

I don’t want to, I don’t want.

SuChin Pak  59:47

I have no intention.

Kulap Vilaysack  59:48

Yeah. If we wanted to we would yeah […]

SuChin Pak  59:51

If we wanted to, we would nice. Well, that’s it.

Kulap Vilaysack  59:55

Is it? I can’t believe it.

SuChin Pak  59:57

Yeah, we’re kicking off this month, with a bang.

Kulap Vilaysack  1:00:00

With a bang and I want to say through this episode My heart rate has lowered my thoughts are clear. You know I feel I feel very chill so thank you think I do feel, thank you Suchin.

SuChin Pak  1:00:16

Listen you know every once in a while I’m there for you these these grasshopper arms can hold, can hold a heavier, yes we I keep I keep my bird feet.

Kulap Vilaysack  1:00:28

Grass and eyelids.

SuChin Pak  1:00:31

Can hold whatever burden you lay just for the duration of the show. And then gotta give it back.

Kulap Vilaysack  1:00:41

Well that’s it take some time this month to uplift and support AAPI folks making change in the world. Our episode next week we’ll have a very special Asian American guests. Here’s a hint he talks about Costco and his Netflix stand up special.

SuChin Pak  1:00:55

I mean, what’s more Asian than that. I also want to mention we have a newsletter and siblings. It is just link after link of stuff we don’t get to in the show, really. This month we added to cart I added to cart a bunch of kitchen stuff that makes me happy in my life easier. Ku, added a bunch of stuff from her Miami trip. It’s all there. The link is in our bio sign up. Follow us on Instagram at Add to Cart pod. We are posting videos this month. So you can see all of our faces all of our salmon lids in person.

Kulap Vilaysack  1:01:33

Yeah, all right.

SuChin Pak  1:01:34

I’ll do better next week. Bye guys.

Kulap Vilaysack  1:01:37

Bye, see you next week.
