I think, SuChin, you are, when I would watch MTV News I would see you SuChin and I would be oh, I could be that too. I feel like I unconsciously or like I was like oh, that’s what I want to do. But I never said that out loud. And yes, so you are a trailblazer and I stand on your shoulders Well, I’m not heavy.

SuChin Pak 

No, and you know what a lift you know here we are talking about our carts. It’s interesting because you know we’ve been doing this a really long time and to be here while it does feel like are we only here it does also feel like we’ve come a long way in just even the past few years right? I feel like the first 15 years was just sort of the same old same old. Even having these conversations even saying that the Emmys were white? This is all stuff that isn’t surprising. But I think the conversations around in the last few years, at least from my perspective, where I stand has just been so mind blowing and I have to imagine that’s kind of why diaspora just like made sense, or how did that all sort of come together?

Well, I remember while I was working at deadline, I was just there’s one day when I was wouldn’t it be cool if there was a trade publication that solely focused on people of color and other marginalized people? And everyone would be like, oh my god, that would be so great. And I was like all, I know right? And then I will just go on with my life. And I carved myself this space out and deadline because it was severely lacking of covering people of color and I launched the New Hollywood podcast while I was there and let’s just be honest, a lot of people in these legacy journalism spaces aren’t with the times or they question things like when I wanted to do the podcast I kept on pushing for it and I just said can we do this and they’re like oh well anyone listened to it. They’re like what is it like 15 minutes long and I was oh no, no, no, it’s a whole hour and they’re like oh well people listen that’s long and I’m like, do you know what a podcast is? And yeah, and then I slowly made this name for myself as the DEI guy at deadline and then after leaving..

Really and I think a lot of what I gravitate towards is you know people who look like me for one and also interesting stories and you had an interesting story.

Dino, let’s get into your cart, let’s get to the things that you have been adding and I’m so interested in what protecting my piece is from mess in a bottle.

Mess In A Bottle is a company owned by Kalilah Wright. She’s the founder she’s an architect based in Baltimore. So she founded this company around 2016 when Freddie Gray died and the uprising was beginning you know for you know, killing of Black men by police officers. She started this company where it’s basically these t-shirts and they have messages on them and it’s Black owned and Mess In A Bottle means message in a bottle and each t shirt comes oh let me show you comes in a bottle. I am wearing one right now call and it says outgrow your own bullshit. And I have plenty of others. I’m all for a message T and especially how it’s done.

These are so elegant. They’re done really well.

I love it. And the first time I saw it was on the red carpet and Lena Waithe was wearing a shirt that said, keep creating dope shit until someone notices and I was all where’d she get that? And then I bought that same exact shirt. And ever since then I’ve just been looking at her site.

You have a list that you’re sharing with us of weed companies owned by people of color. And the first one is Ball family farms.

Dino-Ray Ramos

Yes. I’ve always asked are there any dispensaries in LA that are owned by people of color? Ball family farms. Chris Ball, has this amazing story. He was a professional football player. And he had a side hustle. He learned when he learned about cultivating wheat he got really, you know, into it. And I think he was playing football in Vancouver. And on the side he would be kind of bringing weed from Canada to the US and this was before legalization and all that. And then he was eventually charged with conspiracy to distribute 1000 kilograms of marijuana in the United States and he spent time in jail. But then he later qualify for something called the social equity program la social equity program which helps cannabis and entrepreneurs you know, impacted by the war on drugs. And then he launched ball family farms I’m like really truncating his story but his story is amazing and so he started this family farms and it’s black owned and just to see kind of him start from like getting in jail to now starting his own company whereas you know a shirt like white people before we’re selling weed and not getting the deal he did obviously but now he like I’m just excited because he has strains based on characters from the last dragon like Bruce Lee Roy […] and what was uh, what was vanities name? Laura Charles, I don’t know if you all are like the Last Dragon or if y’all.

And I’m also seeing Karate Kid inspired strains like Miyagi dough and Daniel Russo. The other companies that you mentioned are Luchador and Atrium cultivation.

Yes. So Luchador. We’ll start with Atrium cultivation. My friend Ritesh Rajan on who you probably have seen in Russian Doll and he also is in a movie directed by Sujata Day called Definition Please. He’s an investor and board member of it and it’s a luxury cannabis brand based in Northern California. And Space Age cake is my fave and I just like it because it has cake in the title. So they’re a good company Luchador was created by Carolina Vasquez-Mitchell, Latina and she’s from Guadalajara and she created more than 60 cannabis products and Luchador and if you could find when you see on her website I love the packaging because it actually has a Luchador on there and my favorite flavors I basically do gummies and pineapple mango and cucumber chili lime so to have like a Latina woman owned this company and she’s a scientist too She’s like the Chief Scientific Officer of her lab so I love supporting you know these kinds of companies you know especially from people of color and I love me some weed guys let’s it’s no shame.

Dino, you know before we let you go and I don’t want to but we must, I want to talk about this remove from cart that you’re saying, that you want it out. You say no to the bodyguard remake?

Oh my god. Sacrilege, right? I mean, there’s a lot I want like when people are like what do you want to remove from cart there’s a lot, you know, trash, trash in general I want to remove and when I say trash, I’m not meaning garbage. I’m meaning trash in this industry. But yeah, the body guard that it was recently announced that they were going to remake the iconic movie the body guard which started Whitney Houston, rest in peace. And Kevin Costner. When they announced it I was immediately not on. I just don’t know why. Why? Why? it’s like, is it a money grab? The only person who I would accept in the role is Beyonce. Like that’s it. She’s doing her Tiffany campaign.

She’s got three kids, you know she’s probably working on another album that she’ll drop in the middle of the night and we’ll just be oh my god, you know?

Okay, SuChin. I’m gonna get into some add to carts. My first two are TV shows that I just been loving. These are relatively new shows. The first one is called Reservation Dogs. reservation dogs is about for indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma. They steal, rob and save in order to get to the exotic, mysterious and faraway land of California. Indigenous actors D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Devery Jacobs, Paulina Alexis, Lane Factor, to name just a few. It’s an amazing, an amazing cast. Bobby Lee is reoccurring he’s hilarious in it as well. It is co-created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi of what we do in the shadows, fame, of course, JoJo rabbit hunt for the world of people and just a little Marvel movie featuring the god of thunder, Thor. It is so fucking funny and good. And one of the only shows that is out there in recent history. That reminds me about being Lao. This is set mainly in the reservation. And so there’s this culture of calling people on seeing uncle and cousin and are they actually bread related doesn’t matter. There’s also getting into a world where people don’t got money. And that to me is really, like it really reminds me of how I was brought up and the acting and the writing is tremendous.

This is really exciting. I had no idea that this even existed I’m so glad that you’re bringing this on the show because these are the types of creators and the types of shows and the actors and the tone and the intent when it all comes together and it’s beautifully executed, which is one in a million. I mean it’s so fun to watch.

I don’t know if you watch the Emmys this past weekend, but I was hooting and hollering when the cast and the creator were up there giving out an award, I was so excited I stood up just so I could see them because it was just you know it I just had representation is so important and to see these creators and these actors just shine and be hopefully, be recognized enough to be on the show but hopefully what I goddamnit I hope will do they will be nominated and you know unlike unfortunately most aside from Michaela Cole um well no actors of color who were nominated in historic numbers actually one so anyways, that was a big mouthful, and I was ramming a bunch of things all I wanted to say is that the show is so good and you should watch it.

SuChin Pak 

All those things are things that are the headlines of what happened at the Emmys. I mean I didn’t watch it but I sure read the next day coverage and I sure wasn’t so prized, Emmy so white again, you know? It’s like wow did we not just spend oh I don’t know, the last year and a half just talking about some stuff and here we are but that’s not what we’re here to do. We are here to celebrate a show like Reservation Dogs. Adding to cart immediately.

Speaking of why people my next TV show that I’m saying guys have to add to cart is Only Murders In The Building. And this is starring Steve Martin, Martin Short […] white people, but also Selena Gomez and only murders in the building is about when a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, three strangers with an affinity for true crime suspect murder. They employ their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. Perhaps even more explosive are the lies they tell one another as they are trying to make a podcast. It is so fun and funny. Truly. I love Steve Martin but Martin Short I mean, say no more.

Steve Martin, Martin Short together?

Martin Short is playing this like pompous director Steve Martin is playing this actor who’s you know good days are behind him and Martin Short is in character will constantly give notes to Steve Martin that are cutting and so Martin Short leg and I love every I love I want Martin Short to chew all of the scenery. He is so, he delights me to no end. And then I didn’t know that we needed the trio of them joined by Selena Gomez. Sure. Some of the humor is just like old people, young people when they’re interacting but there’s some great stuff that like supersedes that. And I’m laughing so hard I have been in this podcast game for over a decade. I just remember like those like the first five years nobody could care and nobody knew what it was. And now so many like shows and so many lines are like in reference to or about podcasting.

Well, but, Su, because you know as our guest and friend Tony Rotunno says you know you’re a woman who likes a high touch item. So you had to make sure all these people touch the idea of a podcast.

I will never be on the forefront of anything new. I am not a pioneer; I am not a risk taker. Everybody fails and succeed. Bring me the cliff notes and then cut that in half and then give me the first top three lines, stop that’s all I can do.

Oh my God, I cannot believe that I missed that add to cart. Oh wow. Okay, go I’m not gonna. I’m not gonna steal your add. But I have so many things to say about that add to cart.

Oh, I cannot wait. It was such a delight. Su and I, we came together to do, a little thing that you guys will share with you. We made a little bit of content. And because of that Sue came down on Friday to stay over and I just loved it. I loved having you.

SuChin Pak 

She rolled out the Su carpet. Okay? She had the sutras, the sleep crowns. She had, she had an extra blanket, because she knows that I like it warm.

Kulap Vilaysack 

Because Scott’s like it cold, and I want you to be comfortable.

SuChin Pak 

And I slept like a baby, which is very rare for me in general, but definitely super rare for me when I’m in a new setting, partly because I also was fed and Scott grilled. One of the best things I’ve ever had so good that the next night, I went and got a steak. And I made a steak the second night because I was still chasing the flavor didn’t get it right have to come back to it. I think I’m using the wrong pan. But that’s not for now. So I need that add to cart from Scott.

Oh wait, hold on. don’t, wait, why are we moving past my sides?

Did I think about as I was trying to make my kids eat vegetables last night how this Kulap make carrot tastes like candy?

Kulap Vilaysack 

Well, Kuku does it with butter, brown sugar, maple syrup. And that’s how you make it like candy.

SuChin Pak 

It was like a butter scotch crunch carrot. There was no carrot in sight. It was the most delightful carrot I’ve ever had. You know, I have to say when you guys came out with that food. And I sat down and I took a bite of it. I was thinking in my mind. Oh, this isn’t going to be enough. How do I eat everything and also let them also eat something. I mean, I was so distracted from like, these aren’t enough carrots. I don’t know how to ask for her carrots on her plate. But she would give them to me if I you know, like lots of that I was present but not present. What I’m saying it was an incredible meal. It was just lovely. It was lovely to be taken care of.

She took a steam shower. Just took a steam shower. I said Su, do you want some Eucalyptus essential oils? She said yes. drop drop here. drop drop there. Set her up with some hair story.

SuChin Pak 

Oh my god, you guys, this is all true. Did set me up with some hair story. She was like do you want me to get the scalp brush? I was like yes. If you will. Thank you. Oh, it was like being home. It was kind of it was amazing. But now that I’m talking about, we’re weird. It was weird. It was weird to be in someone else’s house but also in my head at the same time. You know what I mean in a strange new place, but also the most familiar place I’ve ever been.

And in the morning we were getting our hair and makeup done and I went into my freezer and I looked at my H-Mart frozen goods and I warmed, I steamed up some buns and pork and onion buns and I air fried some red bean sesame balls, and that was our breakfast that was our Asian breakfast.

SuChin Pak 

The whole time I’m like oh god, how do I ask for six more of these? Six more of these. But no, it was so fun. It was just the best sleep over ever. And then we spent the next day with Paul Scheer not only doing our fun project but also hearing about his add to carts we have to have him come on and talk about his cart. He’s got some new magic cards we added to cart it was just like it was a lovely time. The whole thing was lovely.

You’ve got to remove from cart, exciting.

SuChin Pak 

Oh boy. I’m not gonna get into it but my landlord, and I think a lot of people can relate to this. I think a lot of people have had this experience where after you rent, this woman is now suing us for beach towels. Chairs that were never there. Buttons apparently that will ripped off of a pillow that never had buttons on it.

Kulap Vilaysack 

Oh my goodness.

SuChin Pak 

And, my first reaction is like good luck. Good luck. I don’t know what that means. But so that’s another thing you guys if I shouldn’t be going to small claims court can you just let me know that because I’m talking a big game over here. So I was like I’m not absolutely not, this is so wrong. Oh my goodness. It’s been eating me up inside and then there’s the other part of me. The other part of me that has read all the books has the […] children, the meditation app, part of me that’s like, write the check and get on with your life. And I don’t know where I am. In this moment, it changes all the time. Because every time I think about going to court and fighting it, some of me feels really good about it. But it’s also very draining. And I feel the same way about writing the check. Like, I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to deal with someone who is seeking revenge is in the wrong. Again, this is from my point of view, she can have her own podcast and tell her side of the story.

SuChin Pak 

We have one. It’s really, really easy. Okay. Anyway, but, you know, so how do you deal with that in your life? Like, how do you deal with when you feel like you have been so wronged? And there’s a part of me that says, okay, I should let this go. But then there’s a part of you that’s like, no, no, like, I need to stand up for myself. I need to. I need to set the record straight. I need to you know; I don’t know. I’m at a loss.

Kulap Vilaysack 

Will you share how much she wants?

SuChin Pak

Yes, she wants in damages. I think it came out to something like $4,500.

Kulap Vilaysack 

I would fight her on it.

SuChin Pak

Beach towels.

Kulap Vilaysack 

That’s a big check. Yeah, that’s a big check. And but how will this boil down? Is it he said, she said thing?

SuChin Pak 

I don’t know, I don’t know how small claims court works. So I was like, well, it’s, you know, I’m willing to go there. And if the judge says, hey, you know, there were buttons on that pillow, you know, then I have no regrets. But I think if I write that check, there’s a part of me that I just, I haven’t been able to do it. And generally, I’m the type of person that will give in and just be like, you know what, it’s not worth it. But this was so egregious, and the amount isn’t insignificant.

That’s your answer. That’s your literally your body’s telling you what to do. Yeah. So you’ll show up.

SuChin Pak 

This whole notion of what we do in the face of what we deem as either challenges or danger, you know, when we go into fight or flight, and I was thinking about how my whole life, all I do is just a piece, you know, it’s like I walk around, I apologize, I smile. And that’s like, that’s how I get out of things, you know, because I’m just too scared to deal with it. And even though thinking about standing in front of a judge to defend myself makes me want to vomit. I think that’s the kind of vomit that is a good kind of vomit. Like, I think that’s the kind that like, builds character. And I think that’s the kind that like, when I look at my daughter, and I tell her that whenever she sees something wrong, that she should be the first in line to speak up for herself. That I can’t do that, if I don’t do it here. That’s, and I’m not trying to make it a bigger deal. But it is a bigger, it’s become a symbol. And I think that you’re right, there’s something here that is very different from how I normally operate. And I think that that’s a good thing. So off to court, I go/

SuChin Pak 

As I’m doing this, I want to just give a few lessons because I’ve been researching it. And for all those people that are renting, I think this is all very common knowledge. But you know, it’s just worth repeating is that when you move in, you take photos, and you do an inventory of everything, the condition of the apartment, and you email it to your landlord, you do a video walkthrough of the apartment, when you leave, you do the same. This is the other thing, when something happens, report it to the landlord immediately and always have a paper trail. So things were going wrong constantly in this house like not a big deal like the toilet would be broken and then I would have to fix it or the tile cracked in the bathroom. But I don’t know after a while you just sort of stop telling your landlord about it, you know, and I just ended up fixing all of these things.

And I’ve learned now that anytime you make any sort of improvement or do something or something goes wrong immediately tell the landlord first and if you’re in a rental now and you haven’t done it, do it, do it now like have everything an inventory of paper, everything, cuff marks with the ceiling looks like you know take pictures of all the fixtures all these things that have normal wear and tear right but your definition of normal wear and tear is very different than what a crazy landlords definition of wear and tear is so there’s simple things you can do to protect yourself should you find yourself in this situation.

I mean I think what’s very clear is that this woman took ownership of the house and is pissed that there was no security deposit and does not want to pay to you know paint.
