Kulap Vilaysack  00:09

Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of ADD TO CART. A show about the things we buy and buy into and what it says about who we are. I’m Kulap, soon to be water tiger Vilaysack.

SuChin Pak

Wow, quite the intro there. In 2022, as we roll into our second week, I’m SuChin Pak. This is also a podcast about what we don’t buy, that says about who we are. And we always want to be specific. Some other kind of housekeeping news, as some of you have seen on our social media, SF Sketchfest has been postponed until 2023. And if you’ve already purchased your tickets, hang on to them, Sketchfest will reach out to you as soon as the new date is decided. We kind of saw this coming.

Kulap Vilaysack

Yeah. And by we, everyone listening as well. And by everyone

SuChin Pak

Yes. And by we, also meaning the entire country, the world, globally.

Kulap Vilaysack

Any aliens that are observing us

SuChin Pak

Yes, as the Omicron variant just rustles through the crowd like a wind. Like the wind in your hair by a lakeside picnic. I think it is. It is best that we stay safe. So for now, the live show is postponed and I’m gonna have to put the routine, you know, we had a little fun sexy routine on for you in 2023. Get your juices flowing. You know all year long.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:01

You’re such a tease.

SuChin Pak

And a letdown, because once I’m going to get them all moist and I’m gonna get there and what a snoozer I had planned for you. Add to Cart, figurative blue balls. That’s a good, that’s a good book title. Anyway, that’s the housekeeping we have but we’ve got an amazing show. Right?

Kulap Vilaysack

So before we get into our add to carts, we are trying something new. This week we are actually going to test out a product to see if it works.

SuChin Pak

Now the product we are testing is called The SolaWave. It is a four in one skincare tool that according to their website provides the following benefits. Number one, microcurrent, it uses a low voltage energy to stimulate the muscles and deeper layers of the skin helping with signs of aging and promoting smooth healthy skin. Okay, number two, red light therapy. Now the optimal range of LED red light at 660 NMs helps deeply rejuvenate the skin and improve the appearance and vibrance of the skin. I don’t know if that’s the word and vibrancy of the skin. Number three, facial massage.

Kulap Vilaysack

We talked about that, right?

SuChin Pak

That low vibration provides a gentle massage, it helps decrease the appearance of puffiness, boosting the skin’s natural radiance and number four finally, therapeutic warmth.

Kulap Vilaysack

Now guys we talk about that a lot of add to cart.

SuChin Pak

So much Asian warming here. The warming wand head helps to increase the absorption of skincare products reduce redness and support healthy glowing skin. Okay, so those are the promises of this SolaWave.

Kulap Vilaysack  04:08

So let me introduce our inaugural scientist, tester, guinea pig. On the day of this recording, it is his birthday. He’s a presence. He’s one of my bestest friends. He’s a writer and actor and the co-host of the podcast Homophilia. Please welcome Matt McConkey.

Matt McConkey

It is Dr. McConkey, but we don’t have to get into the weeds because of my scientific background.

Kulap Vilaysack

I’ve known you for over a decade. Okay, sure. Yeah.

Matt McConkey

Thanks for having me. Is this an ad for SolaWave? Are they a sponsor of the show?

SuChin Pak

Are they?

Kulap Vilaysack

All right. So let’s get disclosures out of the way.

SuChin Pak

I actually don’t know the answer to that question.

Kulap Vilaysack

Okay, so I was gifted a solo wave by my beloved niece, Dina whom everybody on mic knows over a year ago. Yes. And so I enjoy using it when I do but the answer is still the same to the question when our past guests Chriselle Lim asked me, does it work? I do not know.

SuChin Pak

Yes. So they’re not sponsors, but we did receive free ones so I don’t know whatever category that’s in. I received a bond.

Kulap Vilaysack

Yep. Claire got a free ones. Right. And I wish that I got that free one before I purchased your wand.

Matt McConkey

I got a free wand. But apparently it was not free to you.

Kulap Vilaysack

It wasn’t, I purchased it because I had this idea. I wanted you to try this out. Namely, because Matt, you have strong opinions about my skin.

Matt McConkey

I do. I do. And going into this I just want to say SuChin hearing you talk about a need for plumper skin, adult skin that needs to be vibrant. I felt attacked personally. Especially because it’s coming from the two of you who are literally ageless. And I’m not saying that in a nice way. To be clear. I’m angry about it.

SuChin Pak  06:20

Yes, yes.

Kulap Vilaysack

I feel it. I feel it.

Matt McConkey

I’ve got pictures of Kulap and I for 12 years ago and let’s just say one of us looks very different and it’s not Kulap.

SuChin Pak

I want to ask a little bit about your skincare and your skin because it’ll help us understand how the SolaWave may or may not work.

Matt McConkey

Well, you know, I don’t know where to begin. I mean, I know this is meant to be a short segment, but some of my concerns have to do with gravity. And some of them have to do with texture. There are some under eye things that you can’t see because I have the zoom filter on like, maximum.

SuChin Pak

Kpop level. That’s what we use.

Matt McConkey

I have like extreme under eye bags that are I have gone to dermatologists and been like, I will throw all my money at you. Like do whatever you can, inject anything and they’re all pretty much like you need surgery if you’re going to fix those. I’m a tough case.

Kulap Vilaysack

Okay. Okay. All right. Okay. Okay. All right.

Matt McConkey

Have I brought the room down too much?

Kulap Vilaysack

No. We are getting real here. Okay. And I you know; it is that that’s why I think you are a better candidate for the SolaWave. I mean, cuz I’m not.

Matt McConkey

You’re like, I don’t know if it works because I started off glowing and vibrant. And I still am after using it.

SuChin Pak

Now. I on the other hand, is this where we get to talk about our SolaWave experience? Okay. Yes, yes. Matt. I like you spend a lot of time and energy in the caring of my skin, the sagging of my skin, my eyes, I have different issue with my eyes. I’m not going to get into my omega three folds. My oily salmon folds. But I started the SolaWave, I think it’s about three weeks. I love it.

Kulap Vilaysack  08:38

Su’s not a love it person.

SuChin Pak

I didn’t start to see results until about week three. So maybe I’m about a month into it. And I’m using it, let’s say five times a week. I think with this kind of stuff and probably you know this Matt from you know, being you know, sort of a skincare fan is it’s consistency.

Kulap Vilaysack

This is a perfect transition to the add to cart Matty SolaWave challenge. Let’s talk about the parameters because Matt we want you to use the solo wave that again, I purchased for you and this year, um, that I paid with my own money. We want you to come back later and let us know if you would add it to cart. Okay, so but let’s decide. Yeah, for how long, so SolaWave says the results started two weeks. Do you saw results at three? I think we go longer.

SuChin Pak

What do you think, Matt?

Matt McConkey

I will do this until the thing runs out. Whatever the thing is, at which point I hope they will send us another free one.

Kulap Vilaysack

Okay, so six weeks, how does six weeks feel/.

Matt McConkey

And am I committing to five times a week?

Kulap Vilaysack

Well, this is what I want to talk about. Or is it every day? Because it’s only five minutes.

SuChin Pak

I think you will see more results, doing longer sessions for less days.

Kulap Vilaysack  10:06

Let me swing back. How long are because it says you can use it for five minutes how long? I’ve never used it for more than five minutes.

Matt McConkey

It’s says very clearly on the back. Use for five minutes a day for all skin types.

SuChin Pak

Okay. Okay, wait, don’t put this on the podcast. Which is why, maybe on one of the sessions. I may have slightly burned my eye area.

Matt McConkey

How long were you on there?

SuChin Pak

You know, I go for like 10-15.

Kulap Vilaysack

Matt, I think we should try. I can do five minutes.

Matt McConkey

And SuChin, you can continue doing 15 and just see who still has skin.

SuChin Pak  11:02

I had to pause. I got a little bit of a burn. I have to be honest. Be careful around your eye area. It’s not for your eyes anyway.

Matt McConkey

It’s not for the eyes. Su is doing like a rapid sort of hammering motion near her eyeball. It’s very scary.

Kulap Vilaysack

They have very specific instructions of how to handle your eyes skin.

SuChin Pak

I did not read one letter of the box. I am that person. I like to plug it in. I like to just fucking go. Yeah, you’re right. Okay, five minutes a day.

Matt McConkey

Do you actually touch the skin with it?

SuChin Pak

I don’t know. I should stop. Is there any more questions? Which is why? After only having this for a few weeks, I’ve already run out of the SolaWave juice. I’ve been doing this thing for 30 minutes a day.

Matt McConkey  12:11

I’ve been using a year supply once a week.

SuChin Pak

I just I love this thing though.

Kulap Vilaysack

Matt, if possible, if you could keep your regimen as is. So we’re trying to keep it control. So like, new products, you know?

Matt McConkey

I’ll stay at the same level of in love with my fiancée.

Kulap Vilaysack

And also, you’ll have to disclose at the end of this if you’ve done any sort of procedures because we really want to know, does this thing work? Does the SolaWave work? Did you do some sort of facial? Did you do some sort of some, you know?

Matt McConkey

I can commit to that. And I can tell you I probably will. But we’ll see. But I also think that I will still be able to tell the difference between what was you know, intervention by a professional versus what was done by my own hand.

Kulap Vilaysack

For Matt, the SolaWave will be you know, let’s do a before and after picture. For SuChin, her challenge would be to read the box and the instructions.

SuChin Pak

Don’t need to I just got the tutorial here.

Matt McConkey

What’s it like using it before reading the instructions and after instruction.

SuChin Pak

Big difference. Let’s just say big difference had a had a week to mishap with the SolaWave. And now I know why. I’ve got it.

Kulap Vilaysack

Thank you SuChin for giving us sort of a cautionary tale. Yeah, I think that’s good. I think that’s good. And I think it’s very helpful.

Matt McConkey

And it’s helpful to me because I mean, as I probably made it clear, I would have taken an aggressive approach.

SuChin Pak  14:05

I am very aggressive with my skincare. That is something I need to work on. And I’ve learned my lesson guys.

Kulap Vilaysack

Okay, so Matt, just review we’re going to do this for six weeks, you’re going to do this for five minutes with the serum. And for those six weeks we’re going to need a before and after pic if you feel so inclined if you want to share any progress pics videos, we’ll accept them.

Matt McConkey

For sure. Yeah, happy to generate content.

SuChin Pak

My goodness. SolaWave, what are we getting? We better get more wand.

Matt McConkey

Everyone’s like am I listening to an infomercial?

Kulap Vilaysack

But Matt here’s the thing. It could it could not work. It could maybe be in a removed from cart for Matt. We don’t know. And Matt, you shouldn’t feel in any way pressured to add it to cart if you wouldn’t.

Matt McConkey

I didn’t pay for this. I don’t plan to pay for another. Unless I’m pleasantly surprised.

Kulap Vilaysack

There we go. And that will be the add to cart Matt McConkey SolaWave challenge 2022.

SuChin Pak

Oh God, here’s to hoping there’s so many more of these. I can’t wait.

Kulap Vilaysack

Let me say this, too, Matt is prepping for a May wedding. So this couldn’t come at a more perfect time.

Matt McConkey

That is right.

Kulap Vilaysack

So we have steaks. We have rules. We’ve got free wands.

Matt McConkey

And a ticking clock.

Kulap Vilaysack

We have a ticking clock.

Matt McConkey

I can’t wait. Thank you for bringing me on this journey truly an honor.

Kulap Vilaysack

Welcome back to ADD TO CART. So, SuChin, in last week’s episode are what to keep what to leave, you talked about sober January, aka no SuChin shopping January. How’s it going? I mean, give us an update.

SuChin Pak  16:14

You know? It’s going okay, so far. I’ve had a few shaky, shaky moments. I’m not gonna lie. What I did was because I was scared of a like, full cold turkey January, I kind of eased into this at the last weekend of December. And man, a lot of sales happening end of year sales. But I felt like if I didn’t start to get kind of in this mode. My January was going to be. And I did the one last thing I did buy; I did by dermatome was having a 15% off of SkinCeuticals. So it’s my last purchase of the year. Probably like a December 29-30.

Kulap Vilaysack

Well, well within parameters.

SuChin Pak

As of this recording, we are four days in. And I did have to text Kulap, to see if there were still a sale on fastAF I did not get to partake of their end of the year of 50% off sale. And I just asked you I said could you just look on the app, could you just open your app and just let me know if they’re having a sale and she said.

Kulap Vilaysack

I replied. That’s what I call a no, SuChin.

SuChin Pak

Okay, got it. Now I know you see, see these lines. They’re being drawn.

Kulap Vilaysack  18:06

Let’s say even if I said yes, even if I said no, right, right. What does it, where does it get you?

SuChin Pak

It gets me can you buy me more solo wave serum at 50%? off, two glasses, two glass vials of that? Can you have it at your house? So that when I next see you I can pick them up?

Kulap Vilaysack

Claire, I’m going to need to ask you a question. I need a third voice here. If I buy it for her, is that against sober January?

Claire Jones

Yeah.

SuChin Pak

That was quick. Gee, Claire. That was a real quick, well, quick answer. Alright, that’s fine. Hey, you guys. By the way, you too are judging jury on this issue in my life. And I’ll take that with no. I asked you, not Claire. Okay. By the way, you brought her in. I asked you. And then Claire came in. So that’s how it’s going. It’s day four. It’s fine. I’m realizing a few things. I am starting to realize what my main triggers are like, when do I shop? I shop whenever I have my phone in my hand. So that pertains to all else. Yeah, it’s like a […] thing. I pick up my phone. And then I go to my apps. I realize that as I’m scrolling through Instagram, my feed is filled with what skincare stuff, fashion stuff, home stuff. It’s not even ads. It’s all the algorithm telling me the things that I’m interested in so then, you know, it’ll be someone talking about a new makeup palette that they’re using and that they love. And then suddenly I have this little itchy feeling that oh, I just want to click and see what does this make? How much does it cost? What it Where did they sell it? What’s it made of?

Kulap Vilaysack  20:15

Is there a world? I have two things? Two suggestions, not even suggestions, thoughts,  that you don’t have.. The[…] of yolk.. Give me just a second. I really just tried to push that out. I need one more minute. One minute. Okay. Got it. Back on. What if for the month of January, you were to delete those apps off your phone? Your account exists.  That’s what I thought you were gonna say.

SuChin Pak

I don’t know what because I don’t know what will happen to all of the things that I have on the wish lists and those disappeared.

Kulap Vilaysack

Second suggestion, what if you were to move all those apps to like the fourth page on your phone, and you never go to that fourth page?

SuChin Pak

You don’t even need to go there. Because I mean, the way that my phone is organized, I don’t even know where they are. How I find an app on my phone is I use the search function. So couldn’t even tell you where the app is.

Kulap Vilaysack

So now I understand a little better.

SuChin Pak

So what I had said last week was I am not going to be bringing my phone into my bedroom. And I have done that. That’s amazing. I have done that. That was hard. That’s a big one. Another trigger will be this thing that I do. And do you do it? Does everybody do it? Because I know I’ve got a little bit of an unhealthy relationship with sales and price comparing. But anytime I see something that I like, I have to immediately go on an hours, days, weeks long search for the best price value available. I’ll give you an example. Like the other day, I had this craving for matcha tea and I didn’t have any of the matcha powder. So when I went to the Japanese market, and I was getting you know my other things, I was like, I’ll just buy the tea here. And I looked at the price. And I was like wow, $25, this is a very small thing. And I was like, is it ceremonial grade? You know, I’m trying to read it. And then my instinct was to well, let me look it up and see if I could find a ceremonial grade matcha for less than this price on this site. I had to stop myself, right, because that’s where I’m losing all my time. So I just bought the thing, you know, which I would never do. But this price comparing thing. This feeling like I’m saving, being productive, all under the guise of I just want to waste time shopping.

Kulap Vilaysack

Yeah, I mean, that is also just something about being immigrant kids, like are kids of immigrants cam that you and I are there it is, it is hard. You know, I’ve gotten over it buying things full price. But you know, but that said even though I have gotten over it and do sometimes on off to buy things full price, I love a deal. I love a deal. I love the scrappiness of the hustle and all that. So like that’s also something like just fully embedded in the way that we were brought up and having high powered computers in our hands and pockets. Certainly it really encourages that type of behavior. But another part of the math, I think, for me is that, that other factor, right, which is how much it is my time worth and how much and what’s the sum and the gain of the cumulative activity that I do, right?

SuChin Pak  24:21

Yes, I earn an hourly wage of three cents. Three cents an hour is what I’m freakin worth at the rate I’m going. So I bought the thing, which is so hard for me to tell you the last time I’ve ever done that. And I did it as an exercise of like, let me just see how this feels. And it’s a mixed bag. Okay. I was like, Yeah, I was like, oh, wow, that felt really good to make a decision really fast and not agonize over, you know, the, the $5 savings that I was going to make and then the other half of me is like probably paid five, you know probably paid a little too much for this tea that I’m drinking now in so many cupfuls trying to get my money’s worth that I’m paying every three minutes but that’s a whole other thing.

Kulap Vilaysack

She’s using a lot of water into that tea. It’s like she’s cutting it with more water over and over again.

SuChin Pak

What it is, is a phantom promise of green tea in my cup? God damn you. I have been watering and re-watering this cup of matcha tea since yesterday.

Kulap Vilaysack

It’s not tea anymore. It’s a memory. The memory of tea. You maybe had tea yesterday cuz I know you’re asked to do a full survey. Maybe?

SuChin Pak  26:01

Oh my god. So I just want to tell you what I’ve gained so far. In just short four days. In four short days, you guys so listen, if you guys want to do this with me, that would be fun. But by no means am I requiring this.

Kulap Vilaysack

Now we got two challenges. We got two challenges happening on this episode of ADD TO CART. The Matt McConkey SolaWave challenge. Now we have the no shop January.

SuChin Pak

Jiggly thoughts, jiggly thoughts in January if you want to join my no shop, jiggly January come on down, this what I’ve gained, you guys, I have gained some time, I have gained some time, I have been walking. Not hiking. But walking at a vigorous pace. I downloaded an app; I downloaded a walking app to track how many steps I walk. And so that is interesting. The other thing I’ve gained is instead of shopping now I am cooking. Is that okay? So I am now instead of, you know, shopping online for, you know, high waisted, you know, sweat pants, I am cooking a bit more. It’s amazing. And then the final thing that I’m realizing, which is very interesting, is awareness of my times. So what I mean by that is because I’m having to sort of think about and monitor when I get that feeling to go online to shop. I’m realizing that I’m monitoring and being aware of a lot of every of all the other things that are triggering me to do things that feel like I want to shop. So, for example, I realized that in between calls, when I do work, whatever, and I just kind of want to zone out, I open up YouTube and watch a cooking video, which will lead to a makeup tutorial which will lead to a reality show. And it will be two and a half hours later. I have been on YouTube watching hundreds of nonsensical videos that do not uplift my life. And so I just was realizing that I have all of these kinds of and we all do these unconscious behaviors things we do to sort of, I don’t know what you would call them like you’re just like twiddling the time away. And how we twiddle.

Kulap Vilaysack  28:47

100% Instagram for me. It’s excessive. What I do is excessive. I know that.

SuChin Pak

Well, maybe you want to get on this trickily January with me.

Kulap Vilaysack

I don’t know if that’s the right name. I think people hit that […]. They expect breasts that are shaking around. They expect you know; I don’t know. I’m not sure whatever else jiggles

SuChin Pak

Is that actually the neck of a penis?

Kulap Vilaysack

I think it’s the base of the shaft.

SuChin Pak

What the hell are you talking about? If you can’t put a SolaWave on it I’m not interested in it.

Kulap Vilaysack

You know, Sue, you know, you mentioned walking and not hiking of course, and I wanted to share a game changer. As most of you know, I have very large breasts. And you know, when I’m active, I can’t be wearing my road bras I can’t be wearing my lacey things when I’m trying to, you know, move this body around but these […] they need to be harnessed. And when I need to do that this is this is the bra that I highly recommend a true game changer. It is by a brand called Panache.

SuChin Pak  30:23

I haven’t been to a, I haven’t been to a, let’s talk about it. Oh my god you’re having a semiannual sale prices. Oh my God, look at that. They have my band size. I got a little boobies. I’m not clicking. I’m not clicking. Okay. I’m just looking. I’m listening to your story with the visual aid. Okay, I am not clicking.

Kulap Vilaysack

Oh boy.

Claire Jones

Okay, I think I think we should just screenshot your pics, Kulap. And just put those in the doc. We just won’t share links. We just won’t put any links.

SuChin Pak

Did you get a bunch? Tell me please. Did you get a bunch on this semiannual sale?

Kulap Vilaysack

Oh, I feel like, Su, I need you to get off that site right now. Tell me when you hit you’ve closed the window.

SuChin Pak

Complete the look. Yes, the tab is closed. That was weird. Just looking at that. Just the whole graphic of an online shop. Wow. And not having seen that for over a week.

Kulap Vilaysack  32:08

And to be specific the website that I sent her is bare necessities and it’s made it is for large breasted women and Su lit up being not a large breasted woman just because she wanted the taste you know

SuChin Pak

it’s the sales man, they get me, semiannual.

Kulap Vilaysack

Just the idea of a sale. Really got it going. And so Okay, I’m gonna agree with Claire going forward I’m just gonna send it’s not gonna be links to websites it’ll be pictures of products.

SuChin Pak

What the fuck am I on here for, I’m not shopping but I get to ask what you’re buying.

Kulap Vilaysack

Yes, and I will show you the things that I’ve bought pictures of it but not links to purchase because I’m honoring my dear friend SuChin’s challenge, her jiggly January.

SuChin Pak

Shaky ground I’m on. All right. So this sports bra tell me about it then. I mean, just tell me about it. I can’t look at it. But go ahead describe it to me. How this is fun. I realize this is a podcast and I realize all of you guys have only been listening and I get it. I get it. Go on what is it? What is a fabric feel? What does it look like? Walk me through it.

Kulap Vilaysack

Su, this is an underwire sports bra. High impact. It reduces bounce they say by 83% and I’m going to tell you that is true, but it is both comfortable. It looks good under a t-shirt, whatever you’re working under, but more than anything, it keeps my girls in, while I’m trying to do you know I’m on the peloton. You know I’m lifting weight.

SuChin Pak  34:09

How did you discover this?

Kulap Vilaysack

Well, I was a size 34 D in middle school and so I’ve only gained since then. So finding the correct bras and apparatuses that I need to.

SuChin Pak

Is a lifelong commitment.

Kulap Vilaysack

I have tried many sports bra that have been okay this one guy’s again a game changer for my big boobie ladies out there. I won’t steer you wrong here that you know Bare Necessities is the link that will share with you and not SuChin and right now they are having a sale SuChin mentioned, and I would grab some.

SuChin Pak

You know what I’m just realizing that we do a podcast about shopping and that this may be a terrible idea that I’ve embarked on, we shall see. All right that’s it for our show. Wow there are moments of fear you know there for me, I’ve come back I’m sorry I was acting like a baby I do feel good about my January, Kulap, don’t let my face and my pouting deter you from that, we are on the right path to enlightenment and beyond follow us on @AddToCartPod to see what we’ve talked about today to see what cool off is buying, to see what I’m not buying.

Kulap Vilaysack  36:00

Call us at 833-453-6662, and maybe you know give some encouragement to SuChin.

SuChin Pak

And maybe some of you will be joining me on my January journey. Tell us if you want to join this if I haven’t sodded this no by January then really what else am I good for? All right, we’ll be back next week.
