Kulap Vilaysack  01:30

Well, hello Carter’s Welcome back to Add To Cart. This is a show about the things we buy the things we buy into and what it says about who we are. I’m Auntie Kuku Vilaysack.

SuChin Pak  01:39

And I’m Auntie SuSu. Kulap, so excited. There’s a brand new movie featuring an all Asian American lead cast. It’s in theaters now. It’s called Joy Ride. You guys. Like run to the theater? The trailer alone will have you spitting milk out of your nose.

Trailer 01:58

The banks look at me, look at me. Look at me now. Going back to the motherland. It’s a big deal going into your birth countries and talking about it all the time when we’re little remember grand adventure to find your birth mother so proud of you. Your Economy.

SuChin Pak  02:18

The plot revolves around four female friends on a trip to China to help one of their friends reconnect with her birth mother. It’s a comedy, so you know stuff isn’t gonna go as planned. It’s an absolute roller coaster ride of friend high jinks. It is so hilarious Carter’s immediate Add to Cart.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:37

Absolutely Su. And this movie has all of our faves everybody.

SuChin Pak  02:43

Yeah.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:45

We love we love this movie so much that we’re dedicating not one but two episodes worth of gas from the film. Listen, I don’t want to brag, you know? Yeah, I do. I love to brag. Mama’s got connections. So to kick us off today’s guest is a comedian, actress and writer. You’ve seen her on Good Trouble Cloth and I Love Dick she plays Lolo in Joyride and is 1/4 of this hilarious crew of Asian American women please add to cart Sherry Cola.

SuChin Pak  03:14

So exciting. Are you just like pumped all day long?

Sherry Cola  03:19

First of all, what an intro. My two favorite aunties. Okay, like this needs to be a group chat immediately. Just for advice, and healing. I feel like my skin is clearer. I feel like listening to me speak is like emotional key goals. You know.

Kulap Vilaysack  03:34

Oh my god. I’ve never I’m, I feel so flattered. I’ve never been I am somebody who needs words of affirmation. But those ones. Those ones were delicious Sherry.

Sherry Cola  03:44

Emotional Kulish merch coming soon. You know, I am just on cloud nine about the fact that joy ride. It can touch all of the eyeballs in the world right now. Because we’ve been sitting on it for, you know, years. I guess we filmed it, September to November of 2021. So we’ve been just, you know, exploding inside from juiciness and sexualness and Asianess  and the fact that people can see it now and hear their feedback. I mean, to hear their feedback is just, I’m still pinching myself, because it really is the first of its kind. You know, we’ve never seen an R rated big studio comedy in this way. And yeah, we’re for Asian leads. But at the same time, it’s just funny.

SuChin Pak  04:32

Ah, ah, standing ovation.

Sherry Cola  04:36

And yeah.

Kulap Vilaysack  04:38

In my lifetime that we finally have this.

Sherry Cola  04:41

It’s just funny first, you know, like we’re literally doing drugs on a train. I wearing a blue wig. I’m talking to Tom with Baron Davis. You know, this is just Tuesday. You know what I mean, we’re just telling human stories here. Okay. No, the This is a side of Asianess that people don’t get to see the debauchery.

Kulap Vilaysack  05:04

That’s right.

SuChin Pak  05:05

I mean, we’ve all seen it for years firsthand. So live you know, it’s almost it’s almost like watching this movie. It’s like both the cat is out of the bag, but also like, yeah, it’s a Tuesday. you ain’t telling me something? I don’t know. You know what I.

SuChin Pak  05:18

Know. Yeah. Catch up.

Sherry Cola  05:21

Seriously, what took you so long, honey? The door was open. Let’s throw that down and sit on it.

SuChin Pak  05:30

Sit on this.

Sherry Cola  05:37

Sit on this 2023 That’s the energy. That’s the theme.

Kulap Vilaysack  05:41

Got you. Right. But Sherry, this is a banner year for you. A banner year for you. So we’re in July Joyride comes out following month you’re in another movie.

Sherry Cola  05:52

Oh, we all know Randall Park deserves the world.

Kulap Vilaysack  05:55

He does the nicest man the funniest the sweetest, so talented.

05:58

He I, I have no words of Powell full circle. The situation was Let’s just tell a fun story. So Randall Park, the first time I set my eyes on him was on the show Wild And Out on MTV.

Kulap Vilaysack  06:14

I had forgotten Yes.

06:16

Su and Ku O G. Asian on Wildin out was Randall Park was on the first couple.

SuChin Pak  06:23

Whoa, I totally forgot about that.

Sherry Cola  06:26

So I of course, you know, just watching him back then I was like, Oh, this guy is representing all that stem stuff. And then we started to see him, you know, evolve into the Randall Park. We know now. a household name, you know, and Randall Park is on my mailbox. I decided to put his name there. And, and so I got to know him the last few years just seeing him at events. I actually met him backstage at Ronny Chang, Netflix taping the first one because I opened for Ronnie. That’s actually the first night. Adele says she saw me as well. But she saw me in the audience, and was like, Who’s that girl on stage? So I I owe Ronny Chang 10%. Yeah, but But my point is, though, I knew him I saw him at events. We had this, you know, report. And oh, another little side lobby plot is that in 2017, I auditioned for Wildin out because that’s also a little up my alley, the rappy phonies, like that’s what I do. That’s, that’s one of my passions. It was like an eight hour audition. Like we’re just making songs on the fly. I didn’t get it. I was fully devastated. So that was 2017. All I wanted to do was be a cast member on Wild and Out. So cut to top of 2022 I think it was March. Wild ‘n Out hits me up. Because they want me to be a celebrity team captain. So I just like overwhelmed.

SuChin Pak  08:10

Wow, I’m much better. Yeah, your your vision board. I mean, you couldn’t have even imagined it. It’s bigger. Bigger than that.

Kulap Vilaysack  08:18

Come on a universals like I got a better idea.

SuChin Pak  08:21

Yeah, this one.

Sherry Cola  08:22

Universally, honey, just, just, just, just.

SuChin Pak  08:26

Sit on it. University. Sit on it at peptidyl just throwing it out there possible. peptidyl.

Sherry Cola  08:34

Exactly. So I immediately want to tell Randall so I email Randall. You know, keeping it professional I guess. I don’t know why. I emailed him. Paper Trail. You know, I love to list. I’m a big Lister. So I go one. I’m going to be all that out. Yada yada yada, full circle. Goals two, congrats on shortcomings. I can’t wait to see it, you’re gonna kill it. That’s it. I had no idea. There was a role for me and shortcomings. I knew that Randall is going to direct this film called shortcomings based on a graphic novel. I didn’t know much about the characters I admittedly have hadn’t read it. So I that was that that was that you know, so he replies one while then I want to watch while the Netflix yada yada full circle goals. And then two like there’s a there’s a character in Shortcomings that you’re one of my top choices for. And I was like, what, like, that’s bananas. The just the fact that you’re saying those words to me. And he sends me the script. I read it. I love it. It just is having these conversations that are overdue. And you know, the graphic novel came out in 2007. So it was way ahead of its time.

Sherry Cola  09:21

Yeah, it’s a it’s by Adrian to mean a who I’m a huge fan. I have all of his books. It’s this is I’m so excited for this project.

Sherry Cola  09:55

Brilliant and Adrian like deserves all of the flowers, you know Oh happy this is happening, you know that his is, his book is on the big screen. But yeah, I went through my due diligence, of course and audition and chemistry read with Justin and stuff like that. But anyway, so shortcomings, you know what I love is like the range that I didn’t even know I had because Joyride, do not have more going on and Shortcomings to not have less going on, it’s very much just sitting and talking. You know, yeah, and being in fighting, just like exploring relationships and complacency and insecurities and things like that. And we’re just so beautiful, because that’s another version of Asian is that we haven’t seen just to normalize the everyday experience, you know, so I just feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of these two incredible, impactful films for the culture and also for everyone, you know.

Kulap Vilaysack  10:55

I like to see you do on this stuff, too. I like seeing you do this, sit on that Sherry.

Sherry Cola  11:01

I will sit on it. I have my legs criss cross, I am sitting on it. Thank you, that means a lot, boo. Because you know, the hustle is real. You know what I mean?

Kulap Vilaysack  11:11

I do know that I do know that. And I know when.

SuChin Pak  11:15

When the crown lands, when the crown lands on the head of of, of someone who is a solid, you know, and not to put that pressure on you. Because you’re an artist and you can do what you want. And you we don’t we’re past the era of like, every Asian person has to wear the crown for every Asian person. But when it does land on someone that you’re really proud of, and like just going to represent us well. It’s just like herself. Yes, yes. All of it. It just Yeah, it’s for us. It’s such a joy. And we’re such fans and supporters and like on the sidelines, just like rootin for you 100% Every day all the way.

Sherry Cola  11:56

Coming from the two of you like that means the world like it’s it’s not lost on me that y’all are also just bad ass bitches having these conversations from day one, you know, I would say that we’ve been walking the walk, talking to talk before it was trendy. You know, and that’s what’s so powerful. Now we can all have this group chat conversation, you know, now you have this fight within the community, due to trauma bonding, honestly, in the last few years, you know, and it brought this like, fuel and fire and fight that makes us not want to settle for any thing less than what we deserve. Because just me with all these layers. immigrant, queer, Chinese American woman, like these are things that society never rooted for this country ever rooted for in Hollywood never really prioritize, and yet we prevail. And yet we have this resilience and, and yet, we are owning our voices in 2023 more than ever. So when you talk about like, you know, the crown and whatnot, like, you know, I, I feed off the fact that I can possibly amplify voices and create a ripple effect, like, people ask me about the responsibility of representing or whatever, but I’m thrilled to be a motivator of any any sense. Like just to show that, you know, kids who look like me, or identify in all of those boxes, um, you know, don’t limit themselves. You know.

SuChin Pak  13:41

You didn’t have that we had that.

Kulap Vilaysack  13:43

But we didn’t have a lot of models. We didn’t have a lot of models for what you’re describing.

Sherry Cola  13:47

The thing is, you know, we had obviously the trailblazers Listen, I am sitting on the shoulders of the trailblazers,

Kulap Vilaysack  13:53

I mean, I’m looking at SuChin Pak right now.

Sherry Cola  13:55

Listen, tell me SuChin realize that, you are like, equivalent, to the iconic status in my heart of Phoebe from Hey Arnold. I’m really making a lot of.

Kulap Vilaysack  14:12

Really strong. with Hey Arnold. I don’t know if it was pre recording, but this is her second. I’m just letting go through second.

SuChin Pak  14:20

Hey, Arnold.

Sherry Cola  14:21

I’m obsessed with Hey Arnold. But like, you were out there SuChin you fucking legend? Like, right? Honestly. And I E TRL. You don’t Carson Daly gave me my first big break on radio?

SuChin Pak  14:36

No.

Sherry Cola  14:36

So I was on air here at 97 One FM.

SuChin Pak  14:40

Wow.

Sherry Cola  14:41

It’s after college. And I like got on the street team of AMP radio and I climbed up the ladder did everything under the roof like board opping you know, from like, midnight to 6am social media stuff, et cetera. And then I started doing stand up and I had one word just like viral video. and Carson Daly who was the morning show host at the time? caught wind of it. He was like, Wait, there’s a girl that is funny and like does stand up and went, like got a million views like why aren’t we using her? So adding me sporadically to the morning show would come on and poke fun at pop culture and celebrity news and stuff like that. So Carson Daly’s a real one honestly but what I’m saying is that entire era was so pivotal like so defining for for just who I am really honestly even references you know, so SuChin is like, I mean, you were doing a babe like you, you know, Margaret Cho, I can count on one one limb Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh yeah, may not Oh my god. There was star on the Walk of Fame, so well deserved. Like, they probably faced even more problematic situations, you know, and roles in Hollywood. So that I can literally like be on a red carpet and talk shit like, you know what I’m saying? Like, you know, it’s always that sense of community. I feel like we really appreciate you know, the sense of appreciation. Like when we recognize like, oh, hard work, you know, all that.

Sherry Cola  16:20

Yeah, yeah. Add to Cart that.

Sherry Cola  17:24

Speaking of Add to Cart, I want to get into your cart. And I love what you brought to us because they’re their concepts, my opinion their concepts and I think because they’re gonna go into something I think that are that’s under the surface but let’s start with you’ve been adding to cart Asian snacks and hot sauce.

Sherry Cola  18:54

I have a problem. I am an addict. I have a toxic trait. And it is just binge buying is that a term? Here we go.

Kulap Vilaysack  19:07

Yes, it is. 100% It’s it’s it’s this podcast. Go ahead.

Sherry Cola  19:10

I’m BB I’m binge buying snacks and hot snacks and hot sauces but like hardly even utilizing them. They’re just sitting in my cabinet or, or I like to give it out because I had that auntie energy. So whenever anyone comes over, I’ll give them a bag of the you know the Irvin’s Salty Dog chips. I’ll give them you know, like a just a jar of Momofuku chili. Oh, but but recently I made the decision. The unnecessary decision of subscribing to the Hello Kitty collaboration with Bokksu.

Kulap Vilaysack  19:49

I saw that I saw that you added to cart.

Sherry Cola  19:53

I fully added to cart for a monthly subscription of Hello Kitty bokksu snacks. It’s important I this is how I do self care. Okay? Like I don’t spend money on clothes. I’m wearing a karate shirt. While I’m really like eight years old at heart like Hey Arnold and Sanrio What the hell?

Kulap Vilaysack  20:14

But, but Sherry you’re not eating them. You’re just looking at them. Boxing.

Sherry Cola  20:20

A lot of it’s the unboxing Whoa, de.

Kulap Vilaysack  20:23

Oh, is this have to do with something? You were denied when growing up? What is this coming from? Let’s go.

SuChin Pak  20:30

Worthiness is it delayed gratification? What is it

Sherry Cola  20:34

Let’s get deeper? Let’s get deeper. I identify as an only child.

SuChin Pak  20:40

And another box. That’s another box. Which is really weird because she has two siblings.

Sherry Cola  20:45

Yeah, so my dad remarried. I do have two half sisters. One is 14 ones 18.

SuChin Pak  20:53

Spoken like an only child. Yeah, before. Besides them.

Sherry Cola  20:57

I am an old, you know, listen, they’re vestigial organs. And no, I truly adore them. But I grew up for like, so long as an only child. And it’s just liberating. I think, to be able to buy your own snacks. You know, we all know that. We were at 99 ranch with mom and you really want the Pocky you really wanted the Hello Panda. But it was two sweets, you know and diabetes runs in the family. Oh, we’re going deep.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:30

Now you can also have the White Rabbit, you can have the jellies.

Sherry Cola  21:35

Wish that’s a deathwish. So it’s, it’s definitely these these decisions of binge buying are at 3am always, like, not even drunk, just sober. I’m just like, I’m a big swipe upper in life. I’m a sucker for a swipe up opportunity.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:55

You whether you’re an advertiser’s dream, because they are hammering you and you view it as an opportunity.

Sherry Cola  22:05

I see it as a lending hand. A bridge. A gap bridge. No. Bridging the Gap. That’s what I’m talking about. That’s what I’m that’s what I’m saying.

SuChin Pak  22:15

Self care.

Sherry Cola  22:16

Yeah, Snacks is definitely I mean, what’s your favorite Asian snack?

Kulap Vilaysack  22:21

And free for SuChin? I was gonna say it’s the Chingoo right. That’d be.

SuChin Pak  22:24

Yeah, have you tried Chingoo snacks?

Sherry Cola  22:26

I’m not sure tell me more.

SuChin Pak  22:27

Okay, so I think we all have different friends and we have different micro relationships with those friends right? The overarching is like a love but then every friend you have like your thing and I have a thing with another friend of mine Carol who have mentioned we’re just snack fiends and all I want to do wherever I go is is there a cute like independent Asian inspired snack shop? You know and so it’s called Chingoo  snacks and Chingoo is the Korean word for friend. They you DM them on Instagram. And it’s like a chex mix but in different Asian varieties so they have like a matcha one they have like a Korean like a bean powder one they have the original spicy not spicy and they’re delicious like they’re made obviously probably one at a time.

Sherry Cola  23:26

Panda here oh my god I need to step that game up.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:30

Okay the other one that SuChin got me into is Loaf Language. And these are Asian inspired Rice Krispie treats so they all have mochi type of mochi in but they’ll have like they have like a matcha matcha there’s Ube one, Ube Oreo one so delicious. And Sherry also good gift great gift.

Sherry Cola  23:51

I’m like my nipples are hard my nipples hard. Talk dirty to me like why tension suddenly get tension yet and Radek? I, I am immediately adding to cart those two.

SuChin Pak  24:04

But what’s like the last one that you love that just got everything hard?

Sherry Cola  24:08

Well, really though the Irvin’s Salty Duck Egg Chips Do you know those?

Kulap Vilaysack  24:14

No, I’m looking it up right now.

Sherry Cola  24:16

Let me set up at one time. It’s there’s a bunch a bunch of different kinds. The salmon skin we all know and love. Right? Imagine a salty duck yolk just infused in it. Okay, let me let me let me reverse let me reverse cowgirl. So. There is a delicacy specifically in the Chinese culture. Salty duck egg. It is a hard road egg but it’s duck and it’s really salty. I don’t know how they do it. I think it’s some sort of just like maybe salt and clay. I’m making that up. I’m completely making that up. But you eat it with porridge. It’s also often in mooncakes you know the salty, just picture that flavor, just like rich saltiness and yellowness on top of a potato chip and on top of of fried salmon skin. Like it’s a cow out of this words and out of okay, not even paying me. I bought a 24 pack with my own money like I posted about it I don’t even care. It’s not even an ad. It’s just it’s just the glad I’m very glad about the.

SuChin Pak  25:32

Snatch tag. Yeah.

Sherry Cola  25:34

So good.

Kulap Vilaysack  25:36

And it just sounds that like then you just for your friends you just kind of like trick or treating and handing these things.

SuChin Pak  25:43

Auntie style?

Sherry Cola  25:44

Yeah, all treat no trick. I mean, all treat no trick. Well, am I okay, am I okay? We’re gapping the bridge and we’re we’re tricking and treating that is absolutely up there. I also you know what? I’m a sucker for just OG, Wasabi peas.

Kulap Vilaysack  26:02

Oh, yeah. Oh, those are great. I love clears up the sinuses. What a crunch.

SuChin Pak  26:08

I like them in the mix pack. You know cuz you just sometimes, right? Because sometimes I have gone hard on Wasabi peas. And I’ve gotten an ulcer from that like so hard that like your stomach lining gets eaten up. So now I have to roll it back. And I gotta get it in the middle.

Kulap Vilaysack  26:29

She goes really hard on stuff you really.

SuChin Pak  26:31

Heavy hand heavy, heavy, heavy, heavy handed with like skin products to like she just goes you really have to explain to her like you got to calm it. You got to be a little bit more Zen.

Sherry Cola  26:42

You got a firm grip. You got to firm grip.

SuChin Pak  26:45

Yeah, I got a firm grip. It’s a tight grip. So I had, I had to go back to the mix. But oh, when you get a wasabi pea, and it just shoots right up your nose.

Sherry Cola  26:55

I think that like is like it’s like packs lovin I think Wasabi peas, you know, really just is the cure.

Kulap Vilaysack  27:03

Guys, Sherry’s joking Sherry’s joking you get COVID don’t eat Wasabi peas and ivermectin.

Sherry Cola  27:10

Su, with Wasabi peas. You have to microdose.

SuChin Pak  27:14

Oh, I know. I know.

Kulap Vilaysack  27:16

She only macros Sherry. Yeah,

SuChin Pak  27:18

But it’s so hard. It’s so hard because after a while that numbing feeling you just it only begets more numbing like you know what I mean like you just can’t it you just can’t stop and then and then you lose all sense of proportion. And that’s why I have to stop. I have to go back. I gotta go back to the variety pack. I gotta mix it up.

Sherry Cola  27:44

Is really good too. And my one of my favorites is another OG Is the rice cracker with the seaweed towel around his body. Well, seaweed beach towel. You know it’s been laying out.

SuChin Pak  27:58

So it’s a little belt around the waist.

Sherry Cola  28:03

Asian snacks are everything What about?

SuChin Pak  28:06

I love a shrimp chip.

SuChin Pak  28:08

Oh, come on. Now which kind the traditional the traditional big one or the Korean ones that are in spirals?

Kulap Vilaysack  28:16

I like the traditional big one I loved and we would we would make it at home. It was like a beautiful science project. Where are these tiny little like, like almost looks like glass chips that would pop up and expand your fried oil. I mean that you know I’ll fuck with it any any type of shirt but but I like some crackers too. I’ll do those too. Like I like Trump.

Sherry Cola  28:36

No the OG crackling ones. I love how like they’re so iconic. We don’t even question the fact that they’re also pink and green.

Kulap Vilaysack  28:43

Yes, right.

SuChin Pak  28:45

We don’t. Styrofoam, like a package.

Dr. Monica Band  29:18

You know, if you go into an Asian snack situation wanting to read the ingredient list then you’re not that you shouldn’t be in that room. Go somewhere else like not what that’s pure for as a totally different category.

Kulap Vilaysack  29:41

Let’s talk about you adding to cart choosing Zen.

Kulap Vilaysack  30:00

Ignorance is bliss.

Sherry Cola  30:16

You see these beads. I’m rocking these beings from the Buddhist temple, Monterey Park, my, my, my go to a Buddhist temple out in Atlantic. You know, I say Zen Zen is a strong word. I’ve been saying that a lot, because there’s so much unknown in the world right now, you know, like, this industry is unpredictable. Life is unpredictable. And you know, the people in your life you just gotta cherish and et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. I feel like choosing Zen, especially in times where you have anxiety and you are round up about something, you know, I’m a big dweller. Like, I will spiral about some thing that someone said to me eight weeks ago, and it’ll be something tiny, like the tiniest thing. And I’m like, Why? Why would they say that? I mean, like, In what world was that necessary to speak out, but almost eight weeks ago, and I need to choose then, and just live in my own sacred sanctuary of just not being bothered by things like that, because it’s so easy. It’s so easy to be you know, they made a whole show about it beef, the brilliant masterpiece beef, I love the place is literally about like, it’s anger getting the best of you. And, you know.

Kulap Vilaysack  31:31

I think it builds explode letting it affect every part of your life.

Sherry Cola  31:37

Choosing Zen, I think I’m just also letting the good be good. Because sometimes I’m worried about you know, what could happen or having expectations about this and that, but choosing Zen just like, literally focus on what’s in front of me Be present. And just take it day by day, hour by hour. Even, you know, like, a lot of times we get frustrated because let’s say you know at 12:05pm something happens that makes me mad or sets me back. It feels like the whole day is ruined. But no at 1pm We can start fresh.

Kulap Vilaysack  32:12

Look man, like our adrenal system, our nervous system, our cortisol, all these like, you know, we’re trying these are these are precious fluids, you guys, let’s not be expending them. You know, willy nilly.

SuChin Pak  32:25

Okay. Listen them out for free.

Sherry Cola  32:27

Energy is not free. Energy is not a BOGO deal. Energy, the stocks of energy is just going up. You better invest in energy right now. Because those numbers, it’s expensive.

Kulap Vilaysack  32:46

Yeah, that’s it’s that streamer level, the tech company level.

SuChin Pak  32:50

Yeah, keep going. These energy analogies Z.

Sherry Cola  32:54

Elon Musk is shaken. Because the amount of energy I have from choosing Zed.

SuChin Pak  33:03

You know what you said, that example is so good. Because I had come across, I don’t know if it’s article or post or something. And I’m gonna butcher it. But this person was talking about how if you’re upset about something, you know, and thinking back, you know, on your day about what the day was, like, thinking about how long the upset lasted versus how long the actual emotion around it lasted, like, we could have something a common something that we did, or someone said to us, that lasted maybe an interaction of two minutes. But then we spend 72 hours or more or, you know, months, days, weeks, around that energy, and it’s so interesting when you just break down, what is the fact of the thing that happened versus what is the emotional story that we carried around it? And it just, it reduces us to I mean, embarrassment, really, sometimes.

Kulap Vilaysack  34:06

You’re just like, Su, I haven’t thought about it that way. And it’s like, oh, boy, I’m thinking certain stories that I’ve retold in my head and just like, oh, I mean, if you’re saying even two minutes, sometimes the slights that I’ve heard and I’ve obsessed over, like throwaway lines, like throwaway lines, like they were.

SuChin Pak  34:24

B plot. B plot. Yeah, plot meant nothing tonight.

Sherry Cola  34:27

Z plot.

Kulap Vilaysack  34:28

They haven’t. Yeah.

SuChin Pak  34:30

We all keep our scorecard. And I think that like that is such a good kind of framing of it because to choose zen it feels so big. But when you start to break down, okay, what does that mean in my life? You know, like, what are the day to day, hour to hour moment to moment things? It’s stuff like that where you’re like, Okay, can I choose that that moment just stayed in that moment? And then can I move on and not carry this for weeks or days or hours?

Sherry Cola  34:59

Yes. That’s beautiful. I mean, honestly, in the topic of Buddhism, it’s like, let me start my new life now. Like, let me just start a new life that.

SuChin Pak  35:10

I reincarnating Yeah, new Social Security. Yeah, yeah.

Sherry Cola  35:15

Disrespect that came out of that person’s mouth, you know what that was? So, like, my old life. Um, you know, I want to say, though, since we’re on this topic, because it’s so in the line of self care how important therapy has been for me the last two years. So you know, of course, like the topic around Asians and mental health. There hasn’t been a topic to be honest, for years and years and years up until the last few. And I’ve been in therapy for two years now. And, you know, I find myself in those like, really, like, angry moments and frustrated moments just thinking like, oh, I can’t wait to tell my therapist about this. Almost in a way that I’m moving to trash. Like, almost. I can’t wait.

SuChin Pak  36:02

That’s great.

Sherry Cola  36:03

Oh, this to her, so I can be done.

Kulap Vilaysack  36:06

Yeah. I’m holding on to it. I’m not gonna be fit.

Sherry Cola  36:12

Well, because a lot of times also, I’m such a neutral like, Switzerland girl. Like, I don’t like to say anything bad about anyone. So I hardly like to vent some people about other people. So the therapist is the safest space. You know, obviously, I have my girlfriend who I can vent to, but she can only take so much, you know, so? Yeah, it really is, like, helpful to just like, empty trash, you know, like empty trash, honestly. The cart removed from cart, empty trash. You know.

Kulap Vilaysack  36:44

I love that. Talk about empty trash. You are removing from cart saying yes.

Sherry Cola  36:53

Hmm. Listen, I’m removing from my cart saying yes. Not, Not all the time, but just in general.

Kulap Vilaysack  37:04

Thank you again for doing the podcast. I know. You’re super busy. With all of your press. I appreciate that. You said yes to this. Go ahead.

Sherry Cola  37:12

Ku and Su. I will say yes. To y’all a million times. Yes. She said yes. That’s the fucking name of this episode is she said yes. That’ll get people to listen, like what she engaged. So, you know, I’m currently finding the balance between the hustler guerilla style Sherry, that has gotten me to this point. And just balancing that with the sherry that simply has no time. Like, you know, it’s so hard for me to say no, because I want to do it all, that’s the whole thing, like I have the energy like, I truly do have the physical energy, I will turn it on whenever, like, the juice speaks for itself, you know what I mean? When a bit walks in a room. So I want to really, truly want to be everything everywhere, all at once. I really do. And, and that also goes back to the FOMO you know, like, it’s also FOMO you want to be everywhere you want to it taste every slice of the pie. You know, when we’re talking even like birthday parties, like sometimes you know, people are born every day.

Kulap Vilaysack  38:23

Turns out our turns out

Sherry Cola  38:26

Every day in the way these invites come in the inbox. You know, I’m just like, the way I am butter on toast I am spread thin a bit but truly like, it’s okay to not be physically present. For every single thing. Send a nice note, you know, like just send a text or send a gift. I’m just learning. I’m learning it’s being removed. You know, I’m just really doing the most there was a week where I genuinely got said it wasn’t COVID I’m sorry to mention COVID twice but yeah, like I literally got sick and I was just so tired. I was like I traveled I was on a plane them from doing this gig and then I was filming and then just just doing the most this week, like, particularly more than other weeks, I guess. And I just was unwell. Like, that’s the point where I was like breaking down about something just emotionally breaking down crying. And of course I’m like my I’m so snotty because I’m sick and it was just not cute. Like, how could I have avoided this? So just just removing from cart? Saying yes, all the time.

Kulap Vilaysack  39:48

Well, this connects to you adding to cart using Zen what we were talking about earlier about, like energy is not it’s not infinite.

SuChin Pak  39:57

No, no, there’s a cost. There’s a cost to all of it.

Sherry Cola  40:01

You know what I gotta say, though I do get it from my mom. Like my mom is the classic Asian immigrant woman who works from day to night like she is up. And Adam, you know, she has a restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley. When we first came to America, she worked at a restaurant for seven years. And then she opened her own. When I was in fifth grade, and it’s still open, it’s still going strong. And that’s our like, other baby. You know, she’s doing catering gigs on Sunday searches. She’s literally like cooking. Most of the food herself. She’s sweating up a storm, that woman and like she always, you know, threatens retirement, but never does. And, you know, for me, I’m just kind of trying to measure. You know, when I make it, hopefully, that’s when my mom will actually retire and stop working. So then she could just come with me everywhere. Because that’s like, the definition of success. not fame or money or whatever. So my mom can serve your family. Yeah, you know, and she literally won’t leave the restaurant and there’s also, you know, my grandpa’s old and like, she’s taking care of hands. So she just has a lot of, for the lack of better word burdens. That is such a classic Asian and immigrant mother. They survived. They are here and she.

Kulap Vilaysack  41:24

Well, and also I was a restaurant kid, my mom at a Thai restaurant growing up and it’s like that takes it takes up all of the time.

SuChin Pak  41:31

You guys were all restaurant kids. Crazy is that.

Sherry Cola  41:35

What Cities?

Kulap Vilaysack  41:36

Sherry Cola  41:37

SuChin Pak  41:44

All restaurant gets I mean, that’s not hard to find. Three Asians together and you know, it’s a dry cleaner, a restaurant, you know, something like that.

Kulap Vilaysack  41:52

But yeah, former child laborers.

Sherry Cola  41:55

Oh, oh. 1,000%. Like that documentary? Where’s that documentary? Because the sweatshop that? No, I was peeling potatoes. I was rice. I was cutting stream beans. I was like.

Kulap Vilaysack  42:11

That’s right. Debating shrimp.

Sherry Cola  42:13

Yeah. Literally, like.

Kulap Vilaysack  42:14

All that stuff, wrapping them on tons, wrapping the egg rolls all of that stuff.

Sherry Cola  42:19

Which is why we’re just so equipped. Honestly.

Kulap Vilaysack  42:23

That’s right.

Sherry Cola  42:24

Wow. I brought random to my mom’s restaurant recently. And my dad legit put up a photo. I don’t even know where he found this because shortcomings. We did these interviews at Sundance. It was just like IMDB like screenshot I don’t even know he printed it out and he put it he also put a joyride poster and a good treble nominated for GLAAD award a screenshot I don’t even know so.

Kulap Vilaysack  42:51

So Mishary shrine.

Sherry Cola  42:55

Shrine. It was just so cool to see and like, so funny because this was ungraspable, ungraspable.

Kulap Vilaysack  43:06

Beyond their wildest imagination that they couldn’t see past there’s their nose and look at you.

Sherry Cola  43:15

I will never take it for granted. You know the fact that the three of us have the platforms to speak out in a world where they wanted us to shut up you know, it’s, it’s so deep it’s so deep. It’s so deep. It’s it’s too it’s Confucius.

Kulap Vilaysack  43:34

It’s so deep they put the ads to sleep.

Sherry Cola  43:38

Okay, I’m sorry. Hi, Nick Cannon Yeah.
