Meanwhile, Kulap’s dogs Molly and Georgia have their own morning routines, including hopping back into bed for a few cuddles. Oh, and as you can imagine, there’s plenty of talk about supplements — even the stinky ones.

SuChin Pak 00:03
Rise and shine listeners a wake up. Welcome to add to cart a show about the things we buy, we buy into how they factor into our derange routines. This is exciting. We have another deranged routine today. I’m SuChin Pak.
Kulap Vilaysack 00:19
And I’m Kulap Vilaysack. And today we are going to be talking about our morning routines. The stuff we do to start our day, and prep our bodies and minds if that’s actually what we achieve, really, really just gonna tell you what we do. And this is the exclusive behind the scenes look that no one asked for, not one person.
SuChin Pak 00:42
That’s not true, Claire. Claire, I think could yeah, she loves her routine. This is how we started doing this. Well. All right.
Kulap Vilaysack 00:51
This is very intimate guys. This is very, very intimate. So, Su, I mean, I wake up after 7am Because Scott, Scott’s up with Emy. I am very lucky. I feel very fortunate. You know, he’s got that really shift like he’s husband of the year in my opinion. Amen. So I get up really easily. Like I look at the time I had to the toilet, to the toilet. I handle my beds while scrolling on the phone, you know, and shout out to my bamboo wood squatty potty. And of course, my bidet that SuChin likes to talk about. Oh, don’t worry, all of these are linked to my Amazon storefront. And so after I’m going to drink some water to replenish my dry body. I’m going to take some Metformin, which is my meds.
SuChin Pak 02:04
Should I get a Metformin?
Kulap Vilaysack 02:05
Nope, not for you and not your issue. And I opened the curtains, I let the dogs out of their crate, and they can cuddle with me back in bed until about eight-ish. I’m back to bed. You know we have a baby, but the dogs need their time to they need attention too. But I’m also scrolling on my phone responding to text emails. And then at some point, I’m gonna get out of my bed and I’m gonna put a bra on. Or maybe I’m not gonna put on a bra.
SuChin Pak 02:38
To me, it’s like the bra signals. You come home at whatever time you take your bra off. That’s a signal. And whatever time in the morning you put a bra on. That’s the signal.
Kulap Vilaysack 02:53
Su, why don’t you take us to a chunk of your morning and then I’ll come back to mine.
SuChin Pak 03:00
I’m getting up reluctantly at 7am because my kids got to get to school. I’m starting. I like to get up a half hour before the kids get up. I need some time. I’m cranky. I’m cursing I’m upset. I’m not a fun morning person. So I need a little bit of time. I do some hot water with lemon sea salt. And I take my probiotic. And then I start prepping breakfast for kids. Now the probiotic right now that I’m loving, and I’ve tried every probiotic under the sun is the one by Pim.
Kulap Vilaysack 03:41
Yes, I’m into it. It’s the mood biotics.
SuChin Pak 03:45
Yes, I don’t I mean, I don’t know they have a formulation that’s very much about mood and serotonin production, which makes a lot of sense because all of that happens in your digestive system. So right now that’s what I’m taking I love it. Kids get up at 7:30 then they’re eating breakfast and then I’m doing snacks and lunches and water bottles and then the kids are off. Now once the kids leave the house that’s kind of like when my morning right starts for me. Not gonna lie. Sometimes I go back to bed Ku, I’m with you. Sometimes you just need another minute in bed. But lately, and this is something that I’ve been doing now for like a month is that right after the kids leave, I will go into the backyard with some hot green tea. And I’m going to we’re going to link to all the different brands that we use on our Instagram page. And I do a son bath and now this is a new thing and I am loving it and I am highly recommending to you And to anyone out there. So I actually listen to deep dive when Jessica St. Claire was interviewing this woman, a friend of hers, who is all about circadian rhythm. And so her friend had all these health problems, and had been fighting chronic all of these chronic health problems for years and years and years and years. Finally came to a doctor that incorporated sunlight, and maximum optimal sunlight exposure. And so much of her health problems started to change. And so I started to do this deep dive on circadian rhythm and all of that. And so the sun basically, can kickstart and regulate every single hormone that you produce in your body. And if you’re not getting enough sunlight, and enough sunlight from morning, till night, so like till sunset, because all of those spectrums are different types of sunlight, right. And you have to get that kind of into your eyeballs and on your skin. And so we’ve been doing that, and I have noticed an energy change, he’s noticed that he’s sleeping better. I mean, there’s just a whole lot of so there’s so much research around this. And so what I’ll do is I’ll go out there, I’ll check my email, I’ll have my green tea, like on my phone, and I’ll get some sunlight in.
Kulap Vilaysack 06:31
Okay, so this is also what why we’ve risen up to a b minus. It could be gluten, it’s the sun, it’s minus gluten plus Sun equals a higher grade.
SuChin Pak 06:46
Yeah, and by the way, like, you know, people work in offices, people, you know what I mean? There’s so many, so many reasons why we don’t get out in the sun. And so if you start your morning off and just kind of have your coffee, with as much sun as you can. Now, just two things I learned from that podcast is that it doesn’t count if it’s through window. So open up your window, you know. And another Hot Tip for those that live in kind of car culture land is that that’s another place that you can get a lot of sun. And so now I drive with my sunroof open all the time. Because you want to have your windows down like it doesn’t penetrate through windows and it doesn’t penetrate through sunglasses. So you want to think about that as you’re out as you’re walking around. You want to get those rays into your eyeballs and on your skin. And we’re not talking about necessarily like you’re not roasting out there in the sun but you need to get like you know, just throughout the day so if you’re in an office and it happens to have a window open up the window and you know hopefully with the sun contact if you’re doing things and you’re home and you have access to sunlight do them outside so eat your meals outside you know you know scroll on Instagram outside do all these things outside to get as much sun exposure throughout the day. Anyway.
Kulap Vilaysack 08:10
I really I’m gonna look into this and I think that feels right for me in 2023 I can make that change. I can make some adjustments. All right, we’re swinging back to me. I have left my bedroom at this time switch and POC. I’m going down saying hi to Scott and me before taking the dogs outside to handle their business. Really, if I’m being honest, the reason why I’ve left my room is because they have to go potty. They have to go pee pee, they have to go poop. Hopefully I have a bra on. I’ve run and then when I they come back in right now our front yard it’s pretty dirty up front. So when they come in, I wipe them down. And I wipe their cute little faces their privates because they went peepee and poopoo and then their paws in that order. With water wipes. These are also my go to wipes for me. So we were a waterwipes family for years before our child came into our lives and get them on the horn. All of the places that they’re ready, they’re ready and for their for their work, the work that they put in, they get a treat. They get a treat, because they’re good girls. And then I’m gonna make a cup of coffee for myself. I have a Breville espresso machine. And right now coffee that I’m having is a Hayes Davenport Add to Cart. It’s nature’s flavors, whole bean coffee. I brought it up before but I really like it in the flavor I’m tasting right now is the organic carrot cake.
SuChin Pak 09:56
You have a carrot cake coffee? Incredible.
Kulap Vilaysack 10:01
And you know I’m adding some zero sugar Nestle coffee mate which he’s going to agree to with his program but that’s my coffee. So, where are you in your day at this point?
SuChin Pak 10:19
Well, I’ve done my sun bath. I’ve done some grounding, right, had some tea and now it’s time for me to put my bra on. So, gotta change all those undergarments, ladies, right? Get all that those off and into fresh, fresh, fresh socks, fresh, fresh undies, fresh bras, fresh, long johns, whatever, whatever the undergarment of your choices. Yeah. And then I go into my morning skincare routine. So right now it’s winter. So things are a little bit you know, I feel like things are a bit drier. I don’t wash my face with soap, and I just a little bit of water. I’m doing a combination toner, where I’m mixing the two. I’m doing the good light toner. And then I’m doing a then I met you.
Kulap Vilaysack 11:12
It’s a Korean brand, right?
SuChin Pak 11:15
It is a Korean brand. So I’m doing the giving essence, which has niacin amide has fermented ingredients. So something about the two combo of like hydrating, but also a little bit exfoliating, fermentation all of that, like the toner is amazing. And I feel like more so even than at night because you’re so dehydrated in the morning. I feel like my skin that’s all it wants is toners and essences. I just layer on as many until my skin feels like okay, this feels like there’s like bounce in it. There’s some color. And you know, I’ll do guasha I’ll do all of that. You know what I mean? Just really kind of try to get blood flow in and that sort of thing. And then I always do a vitamin C and I’ve done cheap vitamin C’s, I’ve done the most expensive vitamin C’s. The one that I’m really loving, though, is the Barbara Sturm vitamin C. It’s the one that I’m feel like I’m getting the most bang for my buck. It’s moisturizing. It doesn’t irritate and the thing I have the problem I have with vitamin C’s is that a lot of them pill on my face. Like do you have that problem? Like they start to peel off under my skincare. I don’t know. It’s just me. So I do that. And then I put on an SPF right now it’s the isn’t tree hyaluronic acid watery Sun gel recommended by Mahindra that’s and I change my SPF all the time. But that’s like a go to you just can’t miss. And then I put on a zinc stick on top of it. I think because I’m out in the sun so much here in Santa Barbara. I’m always outside that I just like I’m always reacting with zinc.
Kulap Vilaysack 12:54
And is that just like your nose?
SuChin Pak 12:56
Are you all over? My nose, my cheekbones where I am and where I know I’m getting a lot of sun. Yeah. And then I’m going into breakfast and I’m trying I’m eating a gluten free bread. As you all know I shared I’m gluten free now you guys it’s mine. It’s my new church. And I’m put a little son butter on their little son butter. Have you ever tried some butter?
Kulap Vilaysack 13:19
Yes. I’ve tried the sun butter. Chocolate some flour butter because of Thrive Market. And I really like it.
SuChin Pak 13:29
Chocolate Sun butter game changer. I mix both I mix just like the regular and just a little bit of the chocolate some butter. I don’t know something about it. It’s so good. It’s like eating. It’s like having a little bit of chocolate but it’s not. It’s not too sweet. It doesn’t mess with my blood sugar. I put him parts on it. You know sometimes I’ll put chia seeds. You know, I may get a meal because this is like breakfast for me. Banana frozen blueberries.
Kulap Vilaysack 13:56
I don’t know what hemp parts are.
SuChin Pak 13:57
They’re super high in protein. They’re so good for you there. They look like little seeds. Yeah, little seeds. And they’re kind of they have like a such a yummy texture. It’s like a nutty texture to it and they’re delicious. You can add them to everything. Yogurt, and they’re so good for you. Thrive Market has a brand, their own brand that I really like. But just any organic, you know hemp seeds will do. And so here’s another game changer for me. So I have been working with this new Doctor functional medicine thing because I’ve had these sort of underlying health issues. Yeah. And over the holidays. I got really sick, my brother got really sick. And I was like, I’m not sure if Christmas is going to happen. It wasn’t COVID And we kept testing and testing. It was just like this would not go away. And so I had an appointment and I sort of mentioned it and she said listen right now I want you to take 20,000 […] vitamin D for three days, and then go back to your normal amount. And I did it kick to the cold, immediately. Same thing for my brother. The doctor and I both talked about it. And we both upped my vitamin D to 5000 […] and so I love the vitamin D from athletic greens, it’s just comes in a dropper. And it says the recommended dosage is one drop. But I think if you talk to your doctor, and you feel like Vitamin D is something that you’re lacking when I moved up to 5000 That’s another reason why this b minus lifestyle has, I think changed for me. And I think that that’s something that it’s like an easy supplement that a lot of people talk about that you can talk with your doctor about to see if like is that especially for those like living.. And right now if you’re in a, you know, part of the country where there isn’t a lot of sun, it’s cold, you can’t get outside, you feel like you’re catching every cold. I don’t know, I would look into this like that this has been a game changer for me. So I take that with some vitamin C. Like usually it’s a liposomal you know, gel packs. But I eat my breakfast again, in the sun because it’s just another sneaky way for me to get more sunlight.
Kulap Vilaysack 16:26
Okay, let’s see, I make coffee. And now the girls need to eat the feed, feed the girls. And the girls have a cute little we have a cute little kind of wooden bowl situation where it’s three bowls, and their water bowls and in the middle of it. And so they get kibble. And what is their kibble? Let me tell you what kibble is because of course only the best for our babies. Our first babies. It is the […] recipe with real chicken. Natural dry dog food. I mean, it sounds like Susan’s diet right there.
SuChin Pak 17:09
It sounds like your Christmas meal.
Kulap Vilaysack 17:12
Yeah, exactly. You know, Molly, she wants more food at all times. And the thing about her is that she has to have less food because she’s smaller. And so you have to put the food down. You have to watch her eat finish first and then try to move to Georgia. And you have to intervene or the older sister will bite the other ones. And that’s part of the morning routine as well. Oh, I forgot to mention that my spoiled girls also get a spoonful of this canned chicken and gravy. And we never did this with Georgia. But when Molly came she came with this like canned of gravy. Like they came with her. And so that became incorporated in both of their meals. And so my goodness, see they get a little princesses, princesses. And you know before Molly came Georgia, we couldn’t get her to eat. But with the pressure. Now Georgia finishes her food and she grew when Molly came. She likes to play she likes to play ball and stop food was like as secondary. She likes a treat. But now because Molly is just like either staring at her food or actually actively trying to get at her food. She is not having any of that.
SuChin Pak 18:33
That young child is not stealing my food.
Kulap Vilaysack 18:38
And so then now I’m like okay, now I’m hanging out what’s gotten me there? You know, what are they up to? And then one of us puts her down for her morning nap around 9am. So Emy gets up 6:37 and then feeds has her first bottle like 7am, around that and then usually sleeps 8:39. And she is like really good on a schedule. I just feel so lucky she likes to sleep.
SuChin Pak 19:17
Too much sleep.
Kulap Vilaysack 19:20
Affecting the night’s sleep. Started to affect the night’s sleep. We were doing like five hour four to five hours during the day and now we’re moving towards three to just go on or to sleep through the night. That’s what we’re working towards. But she loves to nap she now it’s become really easy to put her down. She’s pretty awesome. I gotta say.
SuChin Pak 19:42
Get you one of those guys.
Kulap Vilaysack 19:47
She’s kind of very cool.
SuChin Pak 19:53
I’m happy for you. I had two babies that never slept anyway.
Kulap Vilaysack 19:58
Yeah, sorry Su. One time, one time, New Year’s Eve, I stayed up, my nurse wasn’t around. I finally said, okay, I’ll be the person to stay with her overnight because Scott was doing it if a night nurse was around, and me was perfect, she was great. Yeah, she kind of woke up at 2am I couldn’t sleep because I’m such a deep sleeper. I just couldn’t I felt like I just was like had to be […] I was just scared to fall asleep even though like when she cries girl was born with lungs, but it’s still I just was so I’m such a little bitch about sleep and so that and I can’t nap now with her around like I don’t do naps anymore for whatever it I guess is what I’m talking about this like sort of like vigilance need to be up new issue. Right, you know, but like, so I’ve just been like, now I feel like I’m back to a normal person because I need so much sleep. And I know this is so crazy for you to hear. Like I need my sleep. I’m a baby bitch. Without sleep. I’m such a baby bitch.
SuChin Pak 21:12
There isn’t one single person. Let’s doesn’t yeah, like doesn’t need more sleep. Right now.
Kulap Vilaysack 21:18
It’s wild. So then when she’s like kind of settled in, then you know, then I’m going to shower or if I’m, if I’m showering because it’s been days, or realistically, I’m just washing my face. I’m putting on product I didn’t get into the product because I felt like we already went through all of our products before, but I’m not like it’s I’m like what’s going on with my skin? More likely. I’m like you I just need to rinse it because it’s fine. Like I don’t need to put soap on it. Or cleanser I should say. And then depending on how I how the skin feels I’m always gonna put like a toner or something just to put in more moisture that way. And then depending on what’s happening in this afternoon, I apply as necessary. And then I put deodorant on that deodorant I highly that was a game changer for me. I am still using it’s the Kosis. The kosis chemistry deodorant and like cuz I’m a Southeast Asian I’m a smelly Asian. Like and not like SuChin like I you smell me if I don’t handle it, and this is one of the only sort of like, not highly chemical deodorants that actually work like that actually don’t like ruin my sweaters if you know what I’m saying. So many sweaters ruined by natural deodorant.
SuChin Pak 22:54
What happens to the sweaters? Is there a way?
Kulap Vilaysack 23:02
At a certain point you just like give up. Yeah, cuz it’s like you try everything to clean it up and it’s just like whoa, and there’s the landfill you know?
SuChin Pak 23:12
Wow. Yeah, I think there’s so many stinky pits sweaters that just are thrown into the landfill.
Kulap Vilaysack 23:20
J Crew will sweater just run by my stinky pits. And then I’m having breakfast and getting into my pills, guys.
SuChin Pak 23:34
Guys, this is 40s, 40s is what is the insurance you have real estate endeavors. Tell me about your pill regimen. You know what I mean? Like what supplements?
Kulap Vilaysack 23:48
Got […] 10. Well also because I’m taking a statin and so that helps you. I have a depletion of Michael Keaton. So then it’s like, okay, then my super Omega three, you know, and I got to get that fish oil. Gotta get that fish oil. You know, I’m taking magnesium at night to kind of replenish myself. I’ve got well you guys know about my pill.
SuChin Pak 24:27
Right pocket, left pocket.
Kulap Vilaysack 24:30
You had mentioned the lipo spirit vitamin C I use that too. That’ll not I mean, you know, there’s one thing about like the I forget the brand of like the Vitamin C powder that everyone used to take this stuff is like, times five times like this stuff is the real deal.
SuChin Pak 24:48
No, it’s disgusting. That’s how you know it’s good. And you just got to swallow it down.
Kulap Vilaysack 24:54
Okay, Su, if you want discussing same brand, but the one for liver, and it smells like, it smells like rotten eggs.
SuChin Pak 25:06
But you know what we’re used to this. I don’t know if in your household you ever did like Chinese herbs? Imagine taking a shovel full of dirt from your backyard, then putting in a dirty sock and boiling that in your house steaming it boiling it up till your windows fogged up for eight hours and having to you finish the sludge and then and then you strain it into a cup. And you drink it warm.
Kulap Vilaysack 25:38
So that’s where I ended my morning. Where did you end yours?
SuChin Pak 25:46
I end my morning with after I’ve had my breakfast now then I usually start work. But if I’m feeling still kind of uninspired and sluggish. And I just don’t want to sit in that desk. I organize something. Have you ever done you know, for me? It’s like..
Kulap Vilaysack 26:08
Have you ever? That was rich.
SuChin Pak 26:14
Look at me. Asking Yoda. Yoda knows how Yoda relaxes? Does Yoda know the way of the world. This grasshopper I’m sorry. But I don’t like to organize things to organize things like you like I don’t need things organized. But organizing something for like, a brief minute. I’m not I don’t I’m not talking about deep dive one hour, two hour, let’s get everything I’m talking about one thing like it’ll be like, organize my sweater piles organize, you know what I mean? Just the kids pantry, snacks, whatever, very, I know, it’s gonna take me 20 minutes to do. And when I organize it, I’ll listen to something you know, or listen to Abraham Hicks on a YouTube or listen to a jay Shetty podcast or listen to a podcast called Heart wisdom. Something that kind of is more mindful, something that feels a little bit more inspiring. And I’m organizing. And that usually gets me super pumped to actually tackle, you know, quote, unquote, work. But also this whole morning routine, which I’m looking at both of our morning routine, which are kind of similar. It’s not you, we’re not to off even the supplements we’re taking.
Kulap Vilaysack 27:31
And we’re also not morning people. That’s the thing. Society tells us that we have to be up.
SuChin Pak 27:40
And I’ve been the type of person where I don’t have a morning routine. And I’m like, I kind of just get to the emails and make sure that […], and I have to tell you, it just doesn’t work for me. I ended up kind of goofing off, I’ll look at videos, I’ll start, you know, organizing my bag, you don’t you might get really distracted. So for me, it’s like when I’ve had the luxury because this is a luxury you guys we know that to shift to a way to have my morning be much more about like optimizing self-care, optimizing, like inspiration versus like forced motivation. For me, I’m much more productive with a lot less time on my computer. If I do this routine.
Kulap Vilaysack 28:28
That makes sense, like well, I right away, I’m on my emails, but I’m like marking, if I can return it fast. If I know the answer fast, then I’ll return it. Otherwise I have like my own of course, surprise, surprise, my own system of highlighting emails and like, you know, it’s a green star for this. It’s a you know, like through Google through Gmail of like when I need to just leave it for later.
SuChin Pak 28:54
All right. Well, that’s our morning routine. Didn’t feel too deranged. There were moments. Well, I know it’s tough.
Kulap Vilaysack 29:00
I think you’re saying that too. Because we’re so similar. So it’s like it’s like we both farted, you know what I mean? And so we’re like, this is fine.
SuChin Pak 29:08
No smell here.
Kulap Vilaysack 29:09
I think we need to hear we need to hear from our listeners. Okay. Okay. And they’re the ones who are gonna tell us.
SuChin Pak 29:17
Jury of our peers.
Kulap Vilaysack 29:21
So we’re moving into the afternoon. What will the afternoon looks like? Who knows, do we want how routine on afternoon really?
SuChin Pak 29:30
Dawn dog pile of shit. The afternoon is like after this. Once I’ve left you here at the morning routine. It’s just crumbling feta cheese. All the way to bugging, a terrible night of sleep. And I get up and I have hope and optimism.
Kulap Vilaysack 29:55
