Kulap Vilaysack 00:10
Hey everyone welcome to ADD TO CART, I’m Kulap.
SuChin Pak
And I am SuChin and we’re so excited. We’re gonna get right to it. But before we do how you doing, Kulap?
Kulap Vilaysack
You know, I’m doing pretty good I think you know we’ve turned a corner, she’s in an easier breezier mind set. How about you?
SuChin Pak
You guys can’t see it, but she’s doing this like, shoulder shuffle fairy sunsoil you know, as she often is. Yeah, today I’m good. Last night I had like one of those weird nights of like panic anxiety and I canceled this recording in my mind, you know, 80 times, you know, you do that you’re like, “Kulaps’ gonna understand. Everyone’s gonna understand.” Listen, we have our days. This is what it is. This is our show. And then I woke up and it was a new day the sun was out. You know? So I’m feeling really good.
Kulap Vilaysack
That’s great. I would understand.
SuChin Pak
Of course. That’s the thing. It’s like, we’re so conditioned to like, never be any trouble to like, be hard working. First one in the office. Last one out. I mean, that’s how we’re conditioned. And I forget. Oh, wait. We run the show. That is a new feeling. And presh, no preshies.
Kulap Vilaysack
No preshies.
SuChin Pak
It’s disgusting as I say it, I’m annoyed with myself. But that’s okay. That may be a thing of ours. No preshies.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, it’s horrible. But at the same time, I’m like, I’m gonna say it again. And I’m gonna say it soon. Here, it comes, here it comes. No preshies. No, no preshies, SuChin you start when you want to and to tell us when and what you added to cart.
SuChin Pak 02:03
Thank you so much. I don’t feel any preshies. So this week, you sent me an article, this beautiful Vogue pictorial of the actress that plays a grandmother in Minari. Her name is yes, Youn Yuh-jung. But out of respect, we’re going to call her Mrs. Jung. And in Korea, you wouldn’t even call Jung you would call her as Seonsaengnim, which translates to teach her or master. So master Jung. So let me tell you a little bit about her. She’s 73 years old.
Kulap Vilaysack
Wow.
SuChin Pak
You know, the rumor has it that she may get nominated for an Oscar which is the first time a Korean actress has ever done so. So she’s just had this kind of amazing renaissance in the last few years and certainly with this film Minari in the last year, this has been such a buzzed about movie. She is yes, the grandmother, but she is not your typical Asian grandmother in this story. She’s such a badass.
SuChin Pak
They say in Korea, she’s sort of the Meryl Streep of Korea, like that’s how established and how long her career has been. Master Jung has had stops and ebbs and flows. And she’s had much more of an eclectic way to start them.
Kulap Vilaysack
I’m loving calling her master Jung. And it’s like, we should do that more often. And we should we should say master Streep. That is fitting. She is earned that.
SuChin Pak
She is a teacher. She’s a master at her craft and her art. So anyway, so they do this interview with her. She’s amazing. She’s 73, she don’t give up. You know what I mean? Like this lady. So let me tell you some quotes that just had me on the floor. So she talks about how in her life she had this sort of, you know, small, but like successful career, and then she gave it all up and she married a man and they got really into the Christian faith, and they moved to Florida, to follow sort of like this. Born Again, church, okay. She gave it all up, raised her kids. And she thought she would learn English in Peter’s St. Petersburg, Florida. And star in Christian films. Okay? Really difficult time. You can imagine transitioning to this life, you know, coming to this small town.
SuChin Pak 04:43
Her husband then cheats on her. And so she goes back to Korea with her two kids, and is like, what am I going to do? She gave birth to her second son named Jo Eol and Jo Eol is the Korean word for always. Later on, she said, I found out that my husband had an affair. He wanted to name his son Jo Eol but he wasn’t going to be Jo Eol. That was really tragic. I mean, this woman has such a wicked sense of humor.
Kulap Vilaysack
She’s lived life.
SuChin Pak
She’s lived life, but she has such a you know what I mean? Just like, it’s just like that. She’s marinated in life, that she can say things with such humor and such intensity and there’s so much in these like, phrases.
Kulap Vilaysack
I mean, you really see that unpredictability, that elegance and that fierceness and truly humor in her role of Minari and that is that film is add to cart folks, add.. to.. cart.. Completely deserving of the Golden Globe and every Oscar imminent Oscar nomination.
SuChin Pak
Yes, let’s hope
Kulap Vilaysack
Let’s hope, let’s hope
Kulap Vilaysack
My add to cart is also movie related. It is about the upcoming Disney animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon
SuChin Pak 06:05
So big.
Raya
The worlds’ broken. You can’t trust anyone. Maybe it’s broken, because you don’t trust anyone. You just have to take the first step.
Kulap Vilaysack
It’s starring Kelly Marie Tran is Disney’s first Southeast Asian American princess. Also the amazing Aquafina Daniel Dae Kim, Jemma Chan, Sandra Oh, and rising star Lau Chinese child actor extraordinaire, Izaac Wang.
SuChin Pak
Wow.
Kulap Vilaysack
He is fantastic in this. It’s out in theaters in on Disney plus premiere access, three, five, Friday, the fifth. And I’ve seen it twice now. Two screenings, the most recent one being this past weekend for Gold House. #goldopen. Let’s make sure that as a gold open, and I had was so emotional for both. The first one I was emotional at the hints and the touches of representation. I was in tears for the acknowledgement to be seen, to be seen..
SuChin Pak
In a Disney movie that’s like..
Kulap Vilaysack
In a Disney of all places and studios. And the second time it was about the story and the message. And I want to give a little background in my small involvement with the film. But two years ago, year and a half, I was reached out by producers of the film as a representative of Los Angeles. They have a South East Asian story trust. One of the most important figures in that is someone who I consider my older brother, […]. And he suggested me to meet with the filmmakers and the producers, it was really important for them to just have a layer of authenticity. Even though this film is not set-in South-East Asia is certainly inspired by many Southeast Asian countries, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, they wanted to make sure that they were honoring their inspirations basically.
Kulap Vilaysack 08:29
And at the top of the year, in 2020, January and January, before the pandemic, Los Angeles put together a blessing ceremony at Disney Animation, which was extraordinary and very meaningful. We call it a Baci Sukwan. And it is a ceremony to call back your spirits to sweep out the bad and bring in the good. And we were able to show our culture in the hallowed halls of Walt Disney Animation Studios. And they were in their last leg of finishing the film. Certainly at that point, we did not know the pandemic was to start in a couple of months.
Kulap Vilaysack
Our goal was to show ourselves and our culture but also to bring good fortune to the film as it was going to be completed. And so I’m so excited that we get to talk about it. I’m so excited that Isaac is amazing in it. And a fan favorite if I might say, and I really I really loved the film. I love Disney movies. I love Pixar movies to have this type of representation to see the brown skin, the sun kissed skin that often people in Southeast Asia have, that I have. It means so much.
SuChin Pak
Yeah. Oh, I can’t wait. I mean, you know, I’ve got two kids that are right in the sweet spot. We’re all very excited. The impact is enormous. It’s hard to even put in words something like this when you grow up with these images and these stories that are part of American culture, you know, that aren’t othered but that are part of our legacy. And listen, Disney’s legacy isn’t certainly far from perfect? Yeah. But they’re such a huge part of how, you know, young people, you know, kids in America, how they view the world. So I just I love that the story is out there. I can’t wait.
Kulap Vilaysack 10:44
And I think in the midst of this rash, and reckoning of Asian American hates, that the message of the film is about bringing our fractured community together and trusting one another. And making the first step even if you’re not ready to. And even if you’ve been hurt before, yeah, and it’s just it feels like a good film for the outside the country as a whole to watch. And you know, like, does he go and get their money? Let that be known. But the good message. The last Add To Cart I want to share with you, you might have noticed already what’s on my wrist?
SuChin Pak
I do. What is that?
Kulap Vilaysack
These are Bala Bangles.
SuChin Pak
Oh, good. I was like she’s under house arrest. This is going to be interesting.
Kulap Vilaysack
They are one-pound weights and my fertility doctor, Dr. Kelly Beck from Bling Empire. I haven’t said that before. But this is true. Me and that Christine lady have the same doctor.
SuChin Pak
By the way, that doctor is like one of the only credible voices in that entire series. She comes on. And I’m scared. I don’t know what is happening. But I’m listening. I’m sitting up straight. Dr. Kelly is a voice of reason.
Kulap Vilaysack 12:09
Yeah, she is the voice of reason. She is known to be one of the toughest doctors in the land apparently. And this is a true story. I was dragging my feet as everybody knows, like, well, what am I gonna do next? Like I don’t know. And I was watching Bling Empire because we were going to do that podcast and to should show up but Dr. Kelly Beck. And I was like, is this a sign?
SuChin Pak
Oh my God, oh my God. Did you make a life decision from an episode of Bling Empire?
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, the second episode, I tried to watch the third, tapped out when they threw that penis enlarger out the window have not returned. But I did pick up the phone and started and I were doing another IVF cycle. So thank you, Bling Empire. And Dr. Kelly Beck for inspiring me to wear these Bala Bangles.
SuChin Pak
But why are you wearing them on your wrist?
Kulap Vilaysack
She comes in to give me an ultrasound. And before she puts the wand up in me..
SuChin Pak
Yeah.
Kulap Vilaysack
I was like, wait, what are you doing? Why are you wearing those Bala Bands? She’s like, Okay, well, I never worked out. And my friend who’s a lawyer, she says that this is toned her arms. So I’ve just been wearing it while I work. And I was like, really? Okay. I’m going to do that too.
SuChin Pak
So you’ve been wearing that just all day?
Kulap Vilaysack
All day.
SuChin Pak
Like as all day and as you lift? Have you noticed does it?
Kulap Vilaysack
I’ve feeling it. But it’s not. Because it’s one-pound weights. So it’s not like really heavy. But, you know, I’m, I’m feeling it and I find myself doing this sometimes.
SuChin Pak
What she’s motioning is 80’s aerobics pumping with her fist. Wow, look at you. Just an everyday fitness icon right here in front of me.
Kulap Vilaysack 14:09
Let’s take a break.
SuChin Pak
Yeah, let’s do it. Let’s take a break and let us let you dance us into the break. I know y’all can’t see it, but she’s gonna do a little Bala. A Bala. You know? 80s aerobic dance us right into the break. There she goes. Look at her. Oh, wow. just popping and locking. Not that but all of those things. Great. We’ll be right back guys.
Kulap Vilaysack
We are back and we’re going straight into what we’re removing from cart and I will start what I have removed because of doctor’s orders is sugar and most carbs, I’m only allowed 25 grams of carbs per meal, three meals.
SuChin Pak
What would is 25 grams of carbs look like and rice scoops?
Kulap Vilaysack
No rice. That equals zero rice.
SuChin Pak
I was like 25 grams. I was like, maybe that’s like that seems like a lot, let’s say good two scoops of rice.
Kulap Vilaysack
No, no, no, no, no, no. I mean. It is a gosh, what is what? What is it good it is it is really low. Let’s just say it’s low.
SuChin Pak
It’s not even one scoop of rice?
Kulap Vilaysack
It’s no, I can’t have rice.
SuChin Pak
Oh, boy.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, I know. It’s hard for an Asian to hear. It’s also hard. We learned last week that you have rice for every meal.
SuChin Pak
I do. I do.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah. And this is uh, this is hard. For me. This is hard for me. But this is where we’re at. I can’t have any fruit except for berries. And I can’t have a cup of berries. I have to have like, half cup is what I’m supposed to I do a little bit more. And the thing about it is of course who could stop me except I have a glucose monitor that is attached to my arm. Free Libre thing. It’s what it’s called, that I have to scan periodically through the day. So if I have a cup of berries, it shows up in my reading.
Kulap Vilaysack
And this thing is embedded in your arm your terminator like, you know, device it is going to read because they’re trying to track your insulin levels. Right? What are they tracking with that?
Kulap Vilaysack 16:51
Yeah, my glucose levels, my slim levels, I’m still figuring out the terminology.
SuChin Pak
How do you feel?
Kulap Vilaysack
I do feel better now, there was sugar withdrawal headaches, which are no joke. But you know, if you’re having a limited diet, your body’s not happy about, its supply being cut off. So you get a little itchy if you know, a little itchy little but I have this freestyle librelink. It’s, I scan it with my phone, there’s an app. And I scan it throughout the day. I’ll scan it right now. We’re in a good range, my glucose is in range. And so we’re looking good. And I can lie, but this scanner does it. And my nutritionist also has access to it.
SuChin Pak
Oh that keeps you really on track.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, I’ve completely given into big brother. Because left to my own devices, we are well into our way into diabetes. So for six weeks, we are turning the ship around and then we’ll see SuChin how I will do with one cup of Quinoa.
SuChin Pak 18:13
That’s your reward.
Kulap Vilaysack
That is where we are at. Yep, it is a big change. And I’m just gonna take it day by day.
SuChin Pak
Are you have you had had to diet before? Like, are you a person who’s familiar with diets?
Kulap Vilaysack
Yes, I am, unfortunately. And that is really effed my metabolism. I have done every diet under the sun. But this is the first time I’ve had to do it. And when it wasn’t about just losing weight. It was about like, oh, like I’m pre-diabetic. There’s liver issues. It’s hereditary. Like, even though I don’t have any symptoms. My numbers are they will only get worse if I continue on. So that’s been the difference.
SuChin Pak
Yeah. And do you feel like a lot of that was linked to how you were feeling emotionally? You know, they’re linked.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, it’s really annoying that everything is connected.
SuChin Pak
It’s so annoying. Why can’t we what’s wrong with compartmentalizing things? I God I wish that we could just do that.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, everything is because of everything turns out, man that sucks. And you know, maybe this is the year where I really I mean SuChin, this is a there’s a whole like I can’t I’m removing from cart eating whenever I want to. There’s no more snacking. I cannot snack. I fast 14 hours between dinner and breakfast. If I put cream in my coffee that’s breaking fast. And then there’s four hours between three meals I have to stop eating three hours before bed. And so guys know that this is because of my physiology. I’m not in any way saying that this should be somebodies diet going forward.
Kulap Vilaysack 20:03
It’s because I have it is my AST and my ALT numbers. And, you know, fatty liver, it’s, you know, My mom’s got diabetes. Like I it’s 6.9 I think for the AST, that’s diabetes. I’m 6.8. So we are on the precipice. All of this can be helped if I just work on what I consume, the raw materials. And for me, unfortunately, I can’t have carbs, or sugar and carbs or sugar for me. And so we are figuring it out. But I feel better. So maybe it’ll stick this time.
SuChin Pak
Look at her. She says it was so much so much conviction in her eyes. No conviction. No, I’m kidding.
Kulap Vilaysack
But SuChin, I don’t know. I only hope for the best.
SuChin Pak
Isn’t that life, though? Isn’t that what our bumper stickers are gonna say? We don’t know. We can only hope for the best. We are optimists. We are optimists here. But I asked that because, you know, you there’s a light a lightness to you that I’m seeing. And so I was like, Oh, I wonder. You know, it’s not only because but I think it’s all of it. I think it’s also because you’re paying more attention to taking care of yourself. And even that even that energy gives you, you know, what I mean? Gives us all a little bit more, you know, sustenance, so it’s all of those stings.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, just spring in your step.
SuChin Pak
Yeah, a little spring in your step.
Kulap Vilaysack
My therapist today was like, it sounds like you’re taking care of things and addressing things you’ve been avoiding for a while. You have said from the beginning, a reckoning is coming.
SuChin Pak
I feel like that was an episode one. A reckoning. She had come in. She here.
Kulap Vilaysack 22:06
Oh, hi. Hello, welcome. Have a seat.
SuChin Pak
Well, listen, we’re gonna support you on this, because it’s the healthiest version of you. And that’s all I want for you, and all of my loved ones. So I’m happy for you.
Kulap Vilaysack
Thank you.
SuChin Pak
I’m also happy that you’re being closely monitored by a professional.
SuChin Pak
So I’m gonna send you a picture, right now on your phone, and I’m gonna send it to you on your cell phone because I want you to be able to see the picture but also zoom in and ask me whatever comes to your mind. Okay?
Kulap Vilaysack
Okay.
SuChin Pak
And what I’m sending you is my desk. The current state of my desk and that is, in and of itself, a complete remove from cart.
Kulap Vilaysack
Oh, my goodness, it hasn’t come yet. I can’t. Oh, here it comes. Okay, I’m taking a deep breath. I’m making sure my eye palette is cleansed. I’m looking at photo. Oh, my. Oh, my, yeah.
SuChin Pak
This is the current state of my desk. I wish I could say that this is not a regular thing. It is what I will say every two days, what my desk ends up being so I will clean it off. And then about 24 hours, somewhere between 24 and 48 hours later. This is what my desk looks like. And before we started filming, I wanted to kind of like, clear my mental space, which often means a physical space. And I looked at my desk. And I said, yeah, this is a problem. So why didn’t you if you want I mean I can, what you want to tell people?
Kulap Vilaysack
Sure.
SuChin Pak
What you see just, things that you notice.
Kulap Vilaysack
I okay, just first take you know there are things on top of a surface that if you hadn’t told me was a desk, it might take me some time because it is fully covered. We have books, we have papers we have good to see or our friend the Yerba Mate is there. There’s food, half eaten, there is empty box of crackers. Let’s see we’ve got glasses. It’s cluttered. Is that okay to say it’s a little maybe there’s a little clutter?
SuChin Pak 24:40
Listen, I like to present myself to the world as a sophisticated working nine to five woman who likes her button buttoned up to the top. Yeah, but this is truly who I am. And I just removing from cart this state of my desk number one, which is a reflection of the state of my mind. And this is it. I mean, this is what it looks like, and I don’t know what to do. I don’t have an answer. I just know that, like, I have to figure out a way. Like, does your desk ever get like this?
Kulap Vilaysack
No. (laughs) It was funny to say it that way. And also, it’s true. You know, I mean, there’s stuff on my desktop, let me just take a photo of it now, so that you can see. And that said, I used to be Messier. And the thing that you’re talking about that the outside is a reflection of my inside, is what shifted things for me. And then also, for me, that may be different is to really embrace the rebel in me. Like, I’m cool. But to really embrace like, I’m very not cool about certain things about everything has its place, and I need things to be a certain way. That combination is kind of what shifted things.
SuChin Pak 26:12
Yeah. I think, to me, what, you know, what kind of gave me pause as I truly looked at my desk, you know, because you don’t normally do that. Like, it’s not like, we’re sending pictures of our desks to our friends, and then doing a podcast about it. But I looked up and I said, wow, this is a desk of someone who is not taking care of herself. This is the desk of someone who seems maybe overwhelmed. This is a desk of someone who was, I mean, there’s a half-eaten corn tamale on my desk.
Kulap Vilaysack
Well, I mean, it’s not there for days, right? It’s just there for like the, you know.
SuChin Pak
The day, but I mean, that’s it, and I just pick it that thing, I pick out a cold pork tamale all day long. Because that’s, you know, what I’m eating. So it just is it’s a, it’s not good. And it’s not always like this, but I have been feeling lately very much. Like I’ve just taken on a lot more than what I would like, what I’m used to, yeah, 100%, this is what I’m used to what I would like, this is not what I want. And so I think that differentiating between, like, what I actually want my life to feel like versus what I am habitually used to, is this reflection of my desk, which I will post up on our Instagram cart, so you can add to cart, so you can see it
Kulap Vilaysack
Oh, by the way, I’ve seen worse. For the sake of the conversation, I wanted to, you know, use certain words, but I, I understand what you’re saying. And I also I have seen, worse.
SuChin Pak
Well, thank you. But my also thing is, is that I’m too cheap, to like buy desk organizers and a proper place for things like I have, you know, a, an outdoor drink tray that holds my incoming mail, I have, like a wooden trough, that I just throw staplers and things and like, I don’t invest, like I feel like that’s, I can’t spend the money. You know what I mean to do that, I mean, I will spend the money on serums. But I just can’t spend the money on figuring out how to make this desk functioning for me. So I think that’s part of the problem.
Kulap Vilaysack 28:29
I think that may be the case. I think there’s some place I think in your mind, you’re like, you know what, it’s not like it’s not going to be like the home edit. And that’s the other side. That’s the extreme. But it is about what you value. Right? And what that conversation we talked about is like, were you spend so little, but it actually cost you.
SuChin Pak
Yes, that’s right.
Kulap Vilaysack
And that this is the realm, we’re talking about, right?
SuChin Pak
Scalp brush, constantly. No, it’s […]
Kulap Vilaysack
Categories, scalp brush.
SuChin Pak
Scalp brush, it is such a like symbol of what you’re talking about, for me.
Kulap Vilaysack
Of like, what are things that it would make you feel good, if there was a place for something, and it doesn’t have to be something from The Container Store. Maybe even like nice versions of containers that were used for something else, you know?
SuChin Pak
Now you’re saying in my language.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, like I have that around here. You know, and there are cheap versions that you could find, but you would just have to value like it’s good to have pens in one place. You know, what sparks joy, and categorizing things together? And I think it would make you feel good.
SuChin Pak
Yeah. And that’s interesting because, right? Like if we wanted to really psychoanalyze it, like feeling good, is not on the word worth it list, right? It’s like, you know what’s on the worth it list? Is being martyr.
Kulap Vilaysack 30:00
(laughter) I love this freakin sturg honesty. Yes, keep going, go.
SuChin Pak
Being a hero.
Kulap Vilaysack
Okay.
SuChin Pak
Being pragmatic, you know, so practical, being tough, you know, like, I don’t need a place where I put pens, I could, I could put it in this, I don’t even know what this is, I think you have to plant things in it, but I put my pens in there because I’m not the type of person that needs to, you know, give in to something that looks beautiful and is functional. So, on the bottom of that list is like feeling good, but not always, right? It depends.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, you got that German vase that is both beautiful, and it holds water and sometimes ice tea.
SuChin Pak
That’s right. I mean, it took a pandemic to get me there but that got there. I got there. Right? So yeah, so anyway, I think it’s an it’s a probably something that we can all relate to of like, what is the state of our x? Our desktop, our underwear drawer? Our you know what I mean? The entryway, the bedroom.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah. Our surrounding, our car, for some people.
SuChin Pak
So I’m working on it. And we talked about even at the end of last year about you know, can we live from a place of abundance versus a place of scarcity and lack and that is the gear that my car is stuck on all the time and I just have to evaluate for myself from time to time
Kulap Vilaysack
But by the way, what your situation right now that vase, that is your pen holder, great. that’s not the problem. That’s not the issue.
SuChin Pak
It’s the tamale?
Kulap Vilaysack
Tamale, empty boxes of crackers. But aside from that, SuChin, it’s just straightening. I look at this. It’s one trash pass. And it’s straightening.
SuChin Pak 32:03
I’m always one trash pass. Like, let’s not I’m not a hoarder. Let’s get everybody you know, let’s dial it back. I’m a one trash pass kind of girl.
Kulap Vilaysack
No. And when I guys went, when I say trash, trash, it’s like, okay, let’s put that the tamale done. Let’s put that away. Let’s get rid of what I think is probably an empty Yerba Mate. There’s a napkin and an empty box of crackers. That’s it. It’s not like, that’s it. That’s the trash pass that I’m talking about.
SuChin Pak
So I appreciate it. And all right.
Kulap Vilaysack
And literally, if you stacked everything else, that’s it.
SuChin Pak
Well, listen, while I do my trash pass, we can take a quick break. And when we come back, my desk is gonna be beautiful, and it’s gonna be Marie Kondo approved. Okay, so there’s that. Alright guys.
SuChin Pak
Alright, guys, we are back to add to cart. And we thought we would take this time to acknowledge some of the fantastic DMs and comments we’ve received on our @AddToCartPod Instagram account. And so Claire, our producer is going to read some of them to us, and then we’ll respond in a delightful and thoughtful manner.
Kulap Vilaysack
You’re speaking for yourself; I don’t know how to respond.
Claire Jones
Okay, so our first one is for both of you because I believe Kulap you actually got this for SuChin. So this listener says: “Hi, I really enjoy your podcast and I recently listened to the Christmas episode. I was wondering if you have a review of the drink Kin. I’m not much of an alcohol drinker. But something like that sounds really nice. It’s not cheap. So I’m curious if you all enjoy it, and found it worth the price?”
SuChin Pak
I am so excited to talk about this. So excited. Wait, I don’t know. I mean, I kind of blew my own mind with this. But hey, there’s just me audience of one. You know what I mean? Test study one. So this can bottle which is it comes in a box, it comes in a package that’s so serious. That is so luxurious, that you you’re scared, you know what I mean? Like you sometimes the packaging is so intense that you’re just like I’m not worthy of the box.
SuChin Pak 34:17
So what I’m saying is, is that I get it. It’s intimidating. The box is intimidating. The brand is intimidating. It promises a lot of things. So I got this from Kulap for Christmas. And it’s a big bottle. And then on the bottle it says like once you open it you only have a certain number of time before the herbs it’s like filled with actives and herbs and all the stuff so it doesn’t last very long. So you feel this pressure that you have to drink it. But not this lady.
Kulap Vilaysack
The twist, the SuChin Pak twist.
SuChin Pak
Not ol’ Su Cheapo here, okay? What I did was I was like well, I can’t drink this fast enough, and I’m not going to be pressured. Thank you very much Kin I love you. But I was like, what am I going to do with this? So I poured them into ice cube trays. And I froze the Kin.
Kulap Vilaysack
You’re genius. You’re a genius.
SuChin Pak
So that I could still have the benefits of the Kin properties. But I could have it anytime I wanted.
Kulap Vilaysack
This is stone cold genius.
SuChin Pak
I mean, again, audience of two now I’ve got one more person on my side. I thought it was pretty genius.
Kulap Vilaysack
Because SuChin you don’t ever drink it straight. Right? You drink it with like a sparkling beverage anyways.
SuChin Pak
No. And this isn’t meant to be drinking straight drunken, drunken straight. What is meant to be is kind of like a mixer.
Kulap Vilaysack
Okay.
SuChin Pak
But it’s also just yeah, it’s such a nice beautiful gift to give someone because it’s so unusual. And like I said, the box alone the story alone, it’s worth its weight. Anyway, so that’s my, that’s my reply to that. So thank you.
Kulap Vilaysack 36:07
I haven’t tried it yet. So I give it two thumbs up.
Claire Jones
Okay, so our next one, our listener says: Ladies, thank you for being lights in this dark time. Huge fan of you both. Recently discovered the trend of breast milk jewelry hashtag breast milk jewelry will yield a whole new world on Insta I have to say I’m creeped out. But what do you both think? Add to cart or hard pass. Big Love from London.”
SuChin Pak
But what is breast milk jewelry?
Kulap Vilaysack
Is it like what Angelina Jolie did with Billy Bob Thornton’s blood? Is it a vial around your neck of breast milk? Or?
Claire Jones
Okay, I’m watching a Tiktok video on Instagram says “preserving breast milk today. I’m always amazed at how I can create beautiful jewelry for you with something so special.” And it’s somebody mixing a bowl of what looks like breast milk turned into a paste.
Kulap Vilaysack
Sorry. I’m grown, I’m a grown woman.
SuChin Pak
I’m not grown.
Claire Jones
And like, yes turned into jewelry.
Kulap Vilaysack
So it’s like she’s forming shapes with the liquid instead of water in her clay is breast milk?
Claire Jones
Yes. And then it creates very nice sort of opal, is that the right stone? Opally white?
SuChin Pak
Yeah, milky.
Claire Jones
Stone jewelry.
Kulap Vilaysack
Okay, I can’t, I have to look at it I’m just gonna look at it just to, my instinct hasn’t changed.
Claire Jones
Okay, I’m gonna say this is a hard pass and maybe move on to the next one.
SuChin Pak
Oh my god look at they have one where like there’s tiny baby footprints on it.
Kulap Vilaysack
That’s gone too far. But that’s, okay. I it is it does look like Moonstone or Opal. It’s a little better than I thought. I’m gonna, Oh boy. Oh boy. Oh boy. Not for me, remove from cart, but add to cart if that’s the way you swing, then not for me.
SuChin Pak 38:20
This is a hard swing in a very different direction from where Kulap and I are no judgment by the way. Because some women I think are transformed by this experience and probably want to remember it. I want to block it out like in you know like in a rave rage.
Claire Jones
Okay, our next one says: “okay, just finish the budget tips episode I felt I had to come on here to say regarding getting every last drop of moisturizer serum and cleanser. I learned from my fellow estheticians to cut the bottle open and you could really get out every last drop” So if you look on the document..
SuChin Pak
Old news.
Claire Jones
They have their cleanse, okay..
SuChin Pak
No I’m not saying stop, I’m saying like we got you, you have found your people. We see you I have so, I have more cut open bottles on my nightstand than I have not cut open bottles. I will like..
Kulap Vilaysack
This is our desk conversation again, SuChin. We’re gonna swing back to the desk. And then we move from desk to nightstand.
SuChin Pak
What are you talking about? Kulap, you don’t cut open your bottles?
Kulap Vilaysack
No, I cut open my bottles but they’re not on my nightstand.
SuChin Pak
Where are they then?
Kulap Vilaysack
They’re there. They’re in my bathroom. And when they’re done I throw them away.
SuChin Pak
Oh, yeah, yeah. I mean, I throw them away when they’re done but there’s so many things I need to apply before I put this thing to bed you know and I need to be at arm’s reach. You know what I mean? Like my […] and my potions, but I would want up this our dear friend Naomi sent us a fantastic, it’s called The Spatty, guys it is a tiny tiny miniature spatula and it scrapes the inside of your cut open bottles. Game Changer. And it is shaped like a spatula like a baking spatula where it gets every last drop.
Kulap Vilaysack 40:30
Okay, sorry. SuChin, I have to stop you. Claire is come is being brought to tears. Oh, she loves everything miniature. She’s actually crying right now. She’s really emotional.
SuChin Pak
Claire. Do you not have The Spatty?
Claire Jones
No.
SuChin Pak
Oh, boy. It’s coming your way. This is a game changer.
Claire Jones
This is for real.
Kulap Vilaysack
She loves miniature things.
SuChin Pak
I sent her a miniature video a video of people cooking with the miniature in a miniature kitchen like cooking real food.
Kulap Vilaysack
Yeah, ramen.
SuChin Pak
We lost her for a good three days. It was quite silent from Claire, our producer.
Kulap Vilaysack
She was feeling big feelings.
Claire Jones
Oh my god. I couldn’t handle those, it is.
SuChin Pak
She has such big feelings around miniatures.
Claire Jones
It’s so I have already there’s a grocery store in Utah called Harmons where you can they have a whole miniature section of kitchen utensils that I like can’t I’m not allowed to go down because I just like lose my shit.
Kulap Vilaysack
Claire, this is this as seen on Shark Tank.
SuChin Pak
Yes. It’s so good. But anyway, so you are seen when you want to share your open, cut open bottles. And then I would say get that spatty because what was I doing before this spatty is using que tips are my finger. That’s disgusting. That’s not clean.
Kulap Vilaysack
And look, let’s tie it all together. I bet when you’re mixing up your breast milk with the, you’re gonna need a little spatula, right? Because by the way, the spatty they have it not just for cosmetic, SuChin. It’s that’s just the beauty spatula. We have, pick the spatty that’s right for you. There’s spatty tools for the kitchen, for a handyman for crafting different sizes of spatty’s, isn’t that exciting?
SuChin Pak 42:21
You have no idea how useful a spatula is until you actually use a spatula. So thank you so much for that. We love it. And we also suggest you get the spatty that’ll change the game.
Kulap Vilaysack
