Kulap Vilaysack, SuChin Pak

Kulap Vilaysack  00:10

Welcome back to Add To Cart, I’m one of your aunties, Kulap Vilaysack.

SuChin Pak  00:14

And I’m your other auntie, SuChin Pak, Ku as you know, I am just recovering from dewey mochi bounce, fresh case of summer covid.

Kulap Vilaysack  00:26

Now I feel like one you had it for a while, and also it’s been a while since you’ve had it so explain more.

SuChin Pak  00:35

I don’t even know how a shut in like me gets covid, but I got covid.

Kulap Vilaysack  00:41

[…] A weakness from your crazy amount of traveling and then the onslaught of your aunties coming through. Could that have been and the fact that you do not sleep, I don’t know. Maybe that comes to play.

SuChin Pak  00:55

The fact that that you could travel around the world and scrounge around in stock markets in Asian countries, and come back fine, no covid, and here in the safety bosom of Santa, Barbara hills, I get covid, which was fine. It was three days of death, five days of just being in my room watching TV shows and Instagram. So it was kind of nice.

Kulap Vilaysack  01:24

I think you needed it. I hate to say it, I of course, I don’t want as.

SuChin Pak  01:27

The first thing you text to when I said, I am in my room with covid, and you were like resting, and I said, I am hope, hopeful she says.

Kulap Vilaysack  01:38

I mean, look, it’s a blessing and a curse and what I mean by that is life. We are deep in the throes of summer now, so let’s get into our hot sticky carts, shall we Su?

SuChin Pak  01:51

Yeah, let’s get into it. You go first, because I have to tell you, I have just one thing in my cart.

Kulap Vilaysack  01:55

Fine, great. Then we’ll deep dive into that one thing. Now, my Kai, my nephew, he’s 14 Su. He is in town right now. This is the summer before he starts high school.

SuChin Pak  02:11

14, now is he a typical 14 year old boy uou know, monosyllabic bra, you know, sigma, or is he sweet and cute and still wants, you know, to follow you around.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:29

So it’s both, I mean, let’s get into it. These are the things you need to know about him, last night in my living room, there are a few disagreements, wherein Kai believes one thing, and then me and my sisters believe something else. And it started with me just wanting to him to tell me, what is his haircut? What is this haircut that I see boys’ age, and he’s had now for a number of years, what is it called?

SuChin Pak  02:55

The broccoli cut.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:56

Yeah, hon, it’s called girl.

SuChin Pak  02:59

What is it called?

Kulap Vilaysack  02:59

Low, blowout, taper, fade is what I finally could nail him down. I was like, but Kai for me, when I say blow out, it means that I’m getting, like, my hair, like, blow dried. And he’s like, nah, nah, nah. At one point, I just felt like, are we speaking the same language? Because no, I’m saying something, and you’re like, absolutely not so it’s, it’s basically called fluffy fringe, and it’s what you how you put it, but tis, and so I’m laughing so hard that he was so distinct. He’s like, it is a low blowout taper fade, and not a something that sounds Su when I tell you it sounds exactly like a low, blowout, taper, fade. I can’t, I don’t know what to tell you.

SuChin Pak  03:44

Is there a hair dryer involved?

Kulap Vilaysack  03:46

I don’t know.

SuChin Pak  03:47

I mean, it’s the cut that every Tiktok boy has.

Kulap Vilaysack  03:51

Yes, but what I’m what I’m here to tell you, from the youth, is that they are slight variations, and those variations mean a lot to them.

SuChin Pak  04:01

God, okay.

Kulap Vilaysack  04:03

So his outfit every day so far, and it looks great. He looks fantastic. Like this is not a kid who lacks confidence friends or, you know, he’s just okay. So he wears boxy tees, much like auntie Su. He wears a boxy tee.

SuChin Pak  04:21

Okay?

Kulap Vilaysack  04:22

Various versions of gym shorts, like basketball shorts, but not that long. You know what I mean? Do you know what I mean? Like, we’re not, there’s not a hard pant. I didn’t see, I’ve not seen a hard pant inside a hard short pant. Yeah, no hardware. And then he’s wearing slides. Like, what kind of.

SuChin Pak  04:42

Was he wearing crocs?

Kulap Vilaysack  04:43

He’ll he’s been wearing crocs. That’s like, old style, but he, he’s got various Yeezys. There’s very there’s just, like, okay, and grandpa sneakers present from his Tata, which is my younger sister, Alyssa. He got what he calls grandpa sneakers. And if you at that link, you can see what they are. He gave us a wish list for his birthday, which was just, you know, earlier in July. And I considered these. I’m glad Alyssa decided to get these asics gel dash 11:30s in white clay Canyon. My issue is like he’s sending me things that need a new app. Like, he wants this bathing ape shirt, but I have to do this app. And then I’m even looking at stock accidents, like, what? There’s all these things that I have to it’s like, just a culture that I just can’t, I’m not in you, don’t I mean, like, no, what do you think of the show?

SuChin Pak  05:35

I mean, just stepping back, this is a very fashionable kid. And, I mean, I listen, I had no idea Minnesota rep to this hard. I didn’t know that he was on the cutting edge of fashion, which is delightful. And my Kai, who is 12, and there’s a world of difference between 12 and 14, because he’s still in he’s still in elementary school. Yeah, my Kai, he hasn’t even gone to middle school yet. Like, couldn’t be farther away from like, what he looks like still has, like, snot on his T shirt, mismatched socks. Could care less so it will be interesting to see when he does find his fashion, what that looks like, because this is a very distinct point of view, and I love it.

Kulap Vilaysack  06:27

And I think your Kai may not, my Kai has been like this.

SuChin Pak  06:32

But he hasn’t firm like at 12, right?

Kulap Vilaysack  06:35

Yeah, we only talk about that was 10. And, you know, he’s also a Leo, so hair is a big deal. It has always been a big deal. There’s been times in the past where I am literally waiting for him to get his hair done, like it’s just sitting there, like, can we go?

Kulap Vilaysack  07:02

We’re gonna jump into the next thing, which I think is gonna shake you up, because the thing that I ended up getting him I was so surprised by, without knowing that it was a phenomenon, my nephew asked me to get him for his birthday, and I did it because it was Sephora. I know how to go on Sephora. It’s uncomplicated for me. He is into designer cologne. He’s been repeating. He is in to designer cologne. He has asked me, and I purchased for him for his past birthday, the Eve, Saint Laurent [….]

SuChin Pak  07:39

I mean, how does he even know about this?

Kulap Vilaysack  07:42

This is a phenomenon, perfume, or this perfume boys at his age wearing expensive designer perfume. And I brought this up to my core, best friends, and Matthew hits me with a link, as Matt is up on this stuff. New York Times has an article that came out fairly recently, smell maxing explained. And it is an article about this. And no clue.

SuChin Pak  08:14

Smell maxing?

Kulap Vilaysack  08:15

Smell maxing, that’s a thing. And we’ll 100% send you guys a link. I have it ready to go. Kai doesn’t call it smell maxing, but it is what is described in the article is what he is about. And in that article, there are boys his age that have huge collections. Now I’m going to walk you through Kai’s collections, which BT Dubs, and we’ll post the photo. He brought all three full bottles to the trip and gave me a demo.

SuChin Pak  08:50

Wait, okay, wait.

Kulap Vilaysack  08:51

First of all […]

SuChin Pak  08:53

The cost of this perfume that you bought him is $155.

Kulap Vilaysack  08:59

It is.

SuChin Pak  08:59

Let’s put that out there.

Kulap Vilaysack  09:00

It’s Eve […] Why?

SuChin Pak  09:02

So he bought, he brought with him on his trip three large, full size bottles of parfum. I mean, bless his sweet little heart, how do you not laugh and cackle? Were you laughing and cackling on the inside, this is so ridiculous.

Kulap Vilaysack  09:20

I said to my sister, Anita, his mom. I was like, what did you get him? Yeah, for his birthday. She’s like, I helped him get the Jean Paul Gaultier, lumel, Alexia. And this is where I lost my mind, and because she said he told me that it’s his winter scent.

SuChin Pak  09:43

Oh, yeah, is going on?

Kulap Vilaysack  09:47

That it’s a winter scent now, yeah, but then I said, I said to Kai, but then why did you bring it here when it’s summer? He is like, well, it’s winter scent or night.

SuChin Pak  10:05

Now, is he walking around completely doused in perfume, or is it like a beautiful, subtle set? Like, look what was his?

Kulap Vilaysack  10:13

That was, that was number two in our disagreement. And to be fair, this was on the heels of him. I described him giving me a demo that was, that was night one, which was.

SuChin Pak  10:26

Wait, what is the demo?

Kulap Vilaysack  10:28

What the demo is wearing? He’s like, You want me to he’s like, yeah, Kuko you want me to give you, show you my cologne, I was like, okay. And then he will, he’ll spray it. And then he wants me to smell it. He’ll talk about it a little bit. Talk about it a little bit. Then he’ll spray another, and I’ll say, Kai, not in the same part of your arm. Do at least do another piece of your arm full spray on the other side of the arm, describe it a little bit. And then third spray on the on his like bio. And then he’s like, now autnie Kuku, you know when it dries though, that’s when it smells really good. That’s when it that was days ago. Last night, we’re just sitting on the couch, he comes down with his three bottles. […] Do you want me to show you?

SuChin Pak  11:15

No.

Kulap Vilaysack  11:17

Get […] and then he asks all of us to rank the sense. And then that led into us talking about, like, Kai, how much are you spraying?

SuChin Pak  11:30

Yeah.

Kulap Vilaysack  11:31

He was like, five sprays max. We’re like, oh no, Kai, that’s too much. That’s too expensive. Kai, that’s too much. His mom’s like, if you spray too much, they’re gonna disappear, because she’s like, I get headaches, like she’s had, she’s already, like, at almost her Max. Then I was like, Kai, okay just tell me where do you spray? He was like, okay, what I spray is, so it’s like, one front of neck, one back of neck. And I was like, what? And then Tata was like, no, you’re supposed to that is something you should do. It’s even better than the back of neck. And then Kai says, so you leave a trail, okay? And then, then that’s one two. Then he was saying, wrist, wrist. And I was like, well, Kai, I think it should be one, two sprays Max, and you walk into it. He’s like nah, okay. I was like, okay, fine, Kai, what if you spray it on your wrist and then you, like, rub it, you know, like, you just rub it and spray and you put it on your temples, you put wherever you need to put it. He was like, you’re not supposed to rub it. You should dab it. Okay, you dab it […]

SuChin Pak  12:46

I love the three aunties trying to get a 14 year old boy to just have a lighter hand on soaking his body with $200 cologne.

Kulap Vilaysack  12:57

And it’s he’s so, so funny, because his reaction to us is that we are we are insane. His face is like a meme. It’s just like […]

SuChin Pak  13:09

Ew, get away from me.

Kulap Vilaysack  13:11

Mouth I gave, like, incredulous, like, like, we’re so stupid, we’re so dumb. He is three.

SuChin Pak  13:20

Oh, my God.

Kulap Vilaysack  13:21

Okay, so I didn’t even name the three. So I only named the two. The third one. Let me go back, because you’d be upset, because I had to ask him follow ups about what he says when these scents are you know best. And he said, the eve st, Laurent y that I got him is versatile. He was like other podcasts say that it’s any season, day or night. Really, it was important that I said that the Jean Paul Gaultier le male elixir, which is got a it’s, I would say it’s more, there’s more vanilla in it. He says it’s a winter scent or night. And then his first one that he got was the Valentino born in Roma. And he goes, it’s spring, summer, fall.

Kulap Vilaysack  14:02

Where is he experiencing these sons? Like forums […]

Kulap Vilaysack  14:06

He may, must be their friends, but yeah, like this New York Times, it’s like their kids his age, with like, 60 bottles and then.

SuChin Pak  14:17

And these are specifically boys, oh my god yes, clicking on the art hair […]

Kulap Vilaysack  14:31

So AXE spray, that’s what it was. And now it’s gone. And so there is, like, a, I think a junior high teacher is just like, it’s just, I wish, I wish they had BO I wish that’s the smell, because they’re these kids are taking to school the glass bottles break their backpacks.

SuChin Pak  14:50

I did not see this coming. The haircut, yeah, but I just this is so far from my reality. And this is news to me. You are breaking news to me. That was a thing.

Kulap Vilaysack  15:05

Right when he came, he immediately unpacked, and there it was. Look at the three right there behind it his deodorant. Behind it is. He’s like Auntie Kuko you know about this lotion? And it’s this, like lotion from Target, and it’s vanilla scented. And does smell good. It does smell good.

SuChin Pak  15:23

Oh, my God, this is, this is hilarious. What they get into. I mean, I was thinking when I was in high school, when we were in high school, it was all about Calvin Klein.

Kulap Vilaysack  15:37

Yes.

SuChin Pak  15:37

Obsession, yeah. CK one.

Kulap Vilaysack  15:41

That’s yeah, CK one was huge for me. Like, I would borrow my dad’s, like, this was his, like, going out nice shirts were, like, Polo Ralph Lauren polos, and then I would just, like, borrow them to go to school and just drench them in. CK one, or it was drenched in like Bath and Body Works Plumeria. He kept going, collapse, stop. These are my shirts. I’m like, mm hmm, I would borrow his jeans. He was so mad at me, so mad.

SuChin Pak  16:13

I don’t know, yeah, I mean, I guess it’s, you know, the opposite, the other side of the spectrum is when I get maybe, like, two emails a year from the homeroom teachers of both of my kids, and the subject line is showering because it’s so bad, the teacher has to send out an email to all the parents on parrot square, because, you know, boys are not showering, and it’s gotten to the point where it’s distracting. Learning can’t be done because my smell is so bad.

Kulap Vilaysack  16:55

Wow.

SuChin Pak  16:57

I giggle at those emails, and then, and then on the other side is like you have to stop bringing your glass bottles of East st, Laurent eau de parfum to school because they’re breaking in the lockers. Like the spectrum is of humanity is is delightful.

Kulap Vilaysack  17:16

Humanity.

SuChin Pak  17:19

It is right? I guess I’m just like, in a in a stinky pod, and You Your, your boy is in the sophisticated fashion pod.

Kulap Vilaysack  17:31

Let’s just pray. Pray for Mike’s sake that your Kai does not.

SuChin Pak  17:35

There’s not even, I mean, come on and give me a break. There’s a perfume. We’re so far from perfume like to get to perfume that’s like on another mountain.

Kulap Vilaysack  17:48

In your family’s tale of like my my family is all about football, but I’m gonna go into theater. Your version, Mike’s version, is no sense. And then Kai insists on being like a perfume nose, or something like that.

SuChin Pak  18:08

Yeah, or something like that, right? Like he because, because his nose is, is, it’s virgin. He’s never smelled anything. And so as he goes into the industry, people are like that nose. It’s the freshest nose that we’ve got in this company. Oh, my God, hilarious.

Kulap Vilaysack  18:24

It’s wild stuff. It’s wild.

SuChin Pak  18:27

I like Kai visits. I like to see an alternate universe just a little ahead of me.

Kulap Vilaysack  18:33

I’m not giving it up to him officially yet. Right now, I’m trying to maintain till the end of his trip that he and I are the same height, and once I relent and we have someone who’s much taller than us, really make sure that he’s a little higher. I will do a full ceremony, and if I record it, I’ll definitely post it. He will have achieved the honor and the privilege of being the tallest, Eliza.

SuChin Pak  19:00

What an honor.

Kulap Vilaysack  19:12

Now let’s get into your carts. What’s going on?

SuChin Pak  19:16

I was trying to think of all these different things, and I had it. And really, at the end of the day. The only thing I’ve been obsessed with is toner pads. And we’re so random.

Kulap Vilaysack  19:29

To me, to me, this is a throwback. Toner pads of when we were teens, dealing with our acne, a little bit when the K beauty trend first began with the 10th step. One of your steps would be a toner pad. Why are we falling to this?

SuChin Pak  19:47

Well, okay, part of it is the K beauty toner pad situation. It’s so big, and when I went to Korea, it’s kind of like the only thing that was on the headline, okay, toner pads.

Kulap Vilaysack  20:06

Wow.

SuChin Pak  20:07

And so I had dipped into toner pads and really loved it. And then when I got to Korea, I was like, oh, my God, you could do a whole routine just with toner pads. Like you don’t have to put anything else on. They have a toner pad for everything. And what I love about K beauty toner pads is, besides the variety of them, it’s the size of them, like they’re so big I brought some of my toner pads, like, for instance, this one I I just I bought in Korea. And I love is the this is a vitamin C toner pad, and the size of the toner pad is.

Kulap Vilaysack  20:44

Essentially SuChin’s whole cheek.

SuChin Pak  20:46

Yes, and so there’s something really satisfying, for some reason, with the size of them, with there’s other toner pads but of course, I’ve I brought just empty boxes, because.

Kulap Vilaysack  20:58

It is free, the one she’s talking about. It’s a vitamin C green tea enzyme brightening pad. You get 60 sheets. There’s 23.49 industry we’ve talked about before on the show, we talked about their sunblock in the past.

SuChin Pak  21:15

It’s like a tried and true K beauty company. So you should be incorporating some kind of vitamin C in your routine, especially in the morning, right? And so I have my vitamin C serum, but this vitamin C toner pad is kind of like it’s just so refreshing. I don’t wash my face in the morning, I get up, I put this toner pad on, and if I have time, like while I’m making breakfast, the cool thing about the toner pads because they’re so big, and use them as sheet masks. So like you do the toner pad all over your face, and then you leave it on your face, and then you’re cooking breakfast, and you’ve got a sheet mask on. Without a full sheet mask, you know what? I mean, you can put two or three on.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:53

How many, so you’re using, like, three?

SuChin Pak  21:55

Not every day, but when I do the mask, I’m using three.

Kulap Vilaysack  21:59

When you’re getting a mask.

SuChin Pak  22:01

Yeah, it’s kind of, I don’t know why.

Kulap Vilaysack  22:06

Okay, I have a request. I need Mike bender to take some video or some photos of you cooking with your SuChin style three, dot face mask.

SuChin Pak  22:19

Yeah, face mask, and then you’ve got this, like vitamin C face mask. You know, I’m only recommending the ones that I bought, and then the ones that I think actually are effective. I haven’t tried all toner masks, toner paths, but it’s impossible. I will get through it. At some point. I will get through all of them but for now.

Kulap Vilaysack  22:39

Wait you say that, you mean the ones that you’ve purchased, are you or are you saying the ones in existence?

SuChin Pak  22:46

In existence, okay.

Kulap Vilaysack  22:49

Well, it’s good to have goals.

SuChin Pak  22:52

They’re just delightful. The Gateway toner pad for everyone will be this one. It’s the Numbuzin five, and it’s a niacinamide concentrated brightening, antioxidant toner pad. And this is empty. I have another one at home. It’s fantastic.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:14

Now, when you say it’s empty, when did you get the SuChin? Because is this pre Korea?

SuChin Pak  23:21

Oh, yeah pre Korea, this was my gateway toner pad.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:24

Got it understood now.

SuChin Pak  23:25

I got this toner pad, and I was like, what are these toner pads? Are they just kind of, you know what I mean? Is it kind of gimmicky, like, do they really work? Like, what’s the why is everyone talking about toner pads all of a sudden? And then I was like, oh my god, I’m in. I’m in. And then when I went to Korea, I bought a whole bunch of toner pads there that I hadn’t seen or, you know, I felt like I wanted to try, and so we’re gonna link a few of the ones that I’ve been loving. But I want you to get into toner pads because it’s the perfect summer skincare routine.

Kulap Vilaysack  23:58

Okay, walk me through it.

SuChin Pak  24:00

Because it’s so refreshing, it’s so light, there’s no like, they’re cold because they’re soaking in some kind of liquid. You know, it’s not like because they’re in the fridge. I suppose you could, you could put them in the fridge. I could put my vitamin C toner pads in the fridge. That’s what I’m gonna do. That sounds amazing.

Kulap Vilaysack  24:19

I remember though to get them when you need.

SuChin Pak  24:21

Oh, yeah, no, it’s a, you know, all of this is a little self care, you know, ritual.

Kulap Vilaysack  24:28

I mean, when are you going to get a mini fridge for your bathroom? When is that happening?

SuChin Pak  24:36

Mike would never let that happen.

Kulap Vilaysack  24:37

No, that’s the answer. Then that would be when, whenever the she shed is is built.

SuChin Pak  24:44

I don’t need the mini fridge when the fridge goes in. I mean, I don’t how many fridges do we have on on property? We don’t need another fridge for food. We need another fridge for my skincare.

Kulap Vilaysack  24:56

I think you have more freezers than you have fridges.

SuChin Pak  24:59

Freezers, fridges it’s too many. We don’t need that many. I don’t need another fridge, freezer combo for food. But this is where I’ll be keeping my vitamin C toner pads.

Kulap Vilaysack  25:09

Look, I buy everything you tell me to buy. Which one do you want me to buy?

SuChin Pak  25:14

So I sent you some when Amazon Prime Day, but the one that I want you to buy is this it is are these two, this vitamin C, this Numbuzin and and I want you to try those two, because I think that those two so far have been standouts. But what I wanted to say was it is the perfect summer skincare routine, because, you know, when it’s hot and you’re sticky and you’re just like, you don’t want to generate more heat, sometimes putting on a cream or a lotion, and then you rub it in your hands, and you rub it on your skin. I don’t know it’s not giving me the sensorial cooling effect that I want in the summertime. So maybe that’s why I’m diving so deep and hard into these toner pads, because they’re so refreshing and it’s just like an easy summer routine, swipe, swipe, swipe, you’re done, and then you move on with your life.

Kulap Vilaysack  26:15

Well, this is so tough because you mentioned that you sent me some things from Prime Day. She sent me what she added to cart on Prime Day, and I basically, I saw that there was a lot of toner pads that I ducked that because I wasn’t aware, much like you weren’t aware about set maxing, that toning pads were all the rage. That’s what the headlines are. Oh, it’s so the issue for me is, is that I did purchase a number of new products from your card, and now you’re saying, throw in, you know what I mean? It’s like, it takes me a beat. Like, I don’t try things like, right away. Like I when I tell you guys that there was, like, four products that I’ve purchased off that she recommended. Now she wants me not one. Get two types of toning pads. This is wild, wild stuff, SuChin Pak.

Yeah, I know, you know, when I got my Prime Day load of skincare, I said, yeah, this is too much. This is too much. I did look at it and and and wonder, have I gone a little too far? I was, it was covid and Prime Day, as you so mentioned in our group texts that those two stars aligned. They did coincidence.

It’s the universe’s fault.

SuChin Pak  27:29

Yeah, and so I did go a little hard, and I do feel like you, no one can get through all of this, so they’ll go in gift bags. You know, I like to send little little boxes of of prezis.

Kulap Vilaysack  27:44

That’s right, trust that when my sister and nephew arrived, there was a abundant and overflowing welcome basket of gorgeous skincare, snacks, books, yeah and yes, absolutely so she’s getting some stuff there. Well, Su, that’s it for our app. Can you even believe it?

SuChin Pak  28:05

I mean, it’s, it’s perfumes and toner pads. I didn’t know that this is where it was gonna go, but I’m so delighted that it did. You’re gonna be able to see all of these gorgeous photos, and yes, I’ll even have Mike snap a photo of me scrambling eggs in my toner pads and maybe nothing else I don’t know, who knows?

Kulap Vilaysack  28:25

Oh, the generosity.

SuChin Pak  28:28

And that’s all at Add to Cart Pod.

Kulap Vilaysack  28:31

Wow, what a tease. And while you’re there, Lena, our social media wizard, has created a survey for you to fill out. And if you follow us on Insta, you may have already seen it.

SuChin Pak  28:41

What kind of products do you want us to talk about? What kind of things do you want us to post?

Kulap Vilaysack  28:47

I personally had water thrown on me specifically for our social media. Maybe you want to see more of that. Yeah, wet T shirt contest, SuChin not wearing anything but pads while scrambling eggs. You let us know. Fill out that survey. You can find a link to that in the show notes or in our bio at Add to Cart pod on Instagram, bye.
