Description

This week, Ku is trying new ways to stay productive, the results of which might reveal themselves in this episode. More importantly, she’s back in the world with her people – friends and strangers alike and it feels too good (although it should be noted that Ku did test positive for a mild case of COVID ten days after we recorded this episode). Meanwhile, Su continues to find great makeup and channel her inner Euphoria look.

SPEAKERS

Kulap Vilaysack, SuChin Pak, Claire Jones

Kulap Vilaysack  00:10

All right, welcome to another episode of ADD TO CART. A show about the things we buy and buy into a what it says about who we are. I’m Kulap Vilaysack.

SuChin Pak

And I’m SuChin Pak. How you doing, Kuku?

Kulap Vilaysack

I mean, I think I’m good.

SuChin Pak

I feel like you’ve been, I don’t know kind of bubbly and Tingley and foamy in the best possible

Kulap Vilaysack

Foamy is right, a little rabid. I’m rabid for the year I guess, I’m just, I’m a rabid soaking wet Tiger, Su. Thanks for asking. Thank you.

SuChin Pak

Okay, got it. Got it. Got it.

Kulap Vilaysack

Tell me about you.

SuChin Pak

I mean, ah, I am filming as well. Not for the year that I you know..

Kulap Vilaysack

Do you actually have rabies.

SuChin Pak

I do have a shopping rabies. My goodness.

Kulap Vilaysack

Are we just shooting fish in a barrel? Are we getting abstracts?

SuChin Pak

Oh, we’re going towards a March No Buy is how hard I’m going right now.

Kulap Vilaysack

I’m talking about myself.

SuChin Pak

I know. And by the way, I won’t pull all of us through that again. I will just do that and not talk about it. Because I have problems. It’s giving me as much insight as not buying. I mean, it really is like, the No Buy January is continuing in the sense that I continue to learn and continue to be just surprised.

Kulap Vilaysack  02:04

I am remembering. I wonder if you caught us on the ABC national program. The Tamron Hall Show.

SuChin Pak

I can’t even look at that clip. Did you look at the clip?

Kulap Vilaysack

Of course I did. Not mortifying. Just I’m a little confused as to why I didn’t like have a mic setup or my like, I just was just ill prepared.

SuChin Pak

Guys, if you didn’t catch our national television debut, then I mean, where have you been? Right? I mean, the world is talking about it. You know, everyone’s asking us about it. But we were guested on the lovely Tamron Hall show on ABC. She did a full episode on her favorite podcasts.

Kulap Vilaysack

The Auntie showed up. And I did watch it again. And she asked me a question that I did not answer, which was about like the psychology, but psychology behind our podcasts like the deeper level. We’re diving into our own psyche is really like we’re using shopping as this like a way to get into and understanding ourselves. Not necessarily changing but really examining, searching.

SuChin Pak

Nobody promise change. If you are looking for change, there are a lot of podcasts we can recommend.

Kulap Vilaysack

I mean get yourself to Brene Brown old episodes because she be off of Spotify. But you know, like, not here.

SuChin Pak

This isn’t where changes. We dive deep. We gasp in horror. We point things out and then we continue per usual.

Kulap Vilaysack

She’s rubbing her temples right now.

SuChin Pak  04:01

My problem isn’t a shopping addiction per se in the sense that I need to have things all the time like that’s also not my problem. It’s this obsessive nature I have, it has something to do with decision making and bargain hunting. Somewhere in there is a darkness.  The hole that is mean is somewhere in there and I don’t, you know?

Kulap Vilaysack

Another thing about the Tamron Hall clip guys, it’s available. Hopefully somewhere, it’s on ABC I’m sure we’ll share the link once again. Su and I spend seconds talking about shoving things in our holes.

SuChin Pak

I know and it’s like morning show family friendly. You guys, this clip I can’t look at it. I won’t look at it. No, no, no, no, no, I won’t ever look at it.

Kulap Vilaysack

Alright, let’s get into our show.

SuChin Pak

Claire’s like, can we please? Okay, do it. Let’s do it. add to cart.

Kulap Vilaysack

Su, I think this is gonna answer a lot of your questions about what’s this energy Ku’s been up to, you know, all right, what is this Lunar New Year energy? Su, my sister and I are dabbling in silo? I think that’s how you say it, which is psilocybin gummies. These are shroom gummies, Su. Thank you, Claire. Thank you for your knowledge. Your great and young. I really appreciate you. What was it again?

Claire Jones

Psilocybin.

Kulap Vilaysack

psilocybin, Psilo is the brand psilocybin is the drug. And this Su is micro dosing for productivity to increase cognitive function. This is its purpose. So it’s not the visuals. It’s not about that. It’s a productivity hack.

SuChin Pak  06:19

Tell me everything I want to know. Get to the good part. What are you feeling?

Kulap Vilaysack

So initially, when I started doing this, I felt nothing. Because I just had one because I’m like, what’s going to happen?

SuChin Pak

You’re taking this in the morning, obviously.

Kulap Vilaysack

Oh, interesting. Interesting. And that’s maybe where I went wrong the first month. Is this inconsistency, for like, what they want you to do is to the dosage is two to three pieces every three days, one day on, two days off. So when I would start it was one, and then I wouldn’t have been on the I don’t feel anything and then I wouldn’t do it for another week. Like it was just all slipshod.

SuChin Pak

You were solo waving it.

Kulap Vilaysack

Yeah, I was solo waving. Thank you.

SuChin Pak

You lost me at the halfway through those directions. I was like, well, I won’t be trying those, go on.

Kulap Vilaysack

It is, that is the thing, because I can’t if it’s not every day, and another day.

SuChin Pak

No, you have to then just put that on the calendar.

Kulap Vilaysack

Okay, I gotta make a note of that.

SuChin Pak

Did you start consistent. We doing it?

Kulap Vilaysack

Okay. Yes. Basically, last Friday. And yesterday, and I want to report back. I can’t just have one, I have to have two to three. And it is like when caffeine. But without the edge. It almost makes me, this is tough though, because I want to take it today. But I’m like don’t take it.

SuChin Pak  08:09

I mean, you know how I feel about instructions. But listen, I know, this is going to be interesting, because we’re going to check back on this. This is the test for you. You’re not doing the solo wave challenge. You’re doing the Psilo challenge. But I want to know if in a few weeks if you still feel the same, because I will for sure feel the effects of something. First two weeks, I’m like, on the mountain telling what bullhorn telling everyone and then week three is when it’s like, as if it never hit my body. You know what I mean? Like, it’s like, the memory of it is erased from my mind. So I always like to see if something is true, tried and true. It’s week three and beyond that you’re really going to see how it affects your life.

Kulap Vilaysack

We need to count that I’m using it as directed. For one week, right now, let’s count that even though..

SuChin Pak

Yeah, that’s what I mean. I’m curious. And you can do check ins whenever you feel like it. I don’t want to say people are looking for quick fixes. But I think that people are looking for ways to feel better. And you guys have to do the research yourself. Please don’t put that on us. This is some sort of a psychedelic drug. But yeah, you know, they’re doing it in doses obviously that is safe, and they’ve removed sort of the hallucinogenic. According, you know, […]

Kulap Vilaysack

To give the specs it’s point 14 grams of psilocybin per piece. Now I’m never gonna say it right. We’re just gonna have to have Claire dub her voice on top of mine.

SuChin Pak  10:00

Do a bit of research. So, if this is working for you, I will as well take on this challenge.

Kulap Vilaysack

Right now, I’m trying to grape gummies, these are gummies. What was that, Claire? I’m not sure. But so tasty.

SuChin Pak

I’m just observing here. Just taking a moment. I mean, Ku is known for her memory, in the circles that I travel in. She’s still trapped brain I call it I am Swiss cheese. She is still trapped. And I have to say it feels a little Swiss cheesy over there.

Kulap Vilaysack

But let me throw this in. Is the what I drink today I’ve taken to making since my sister has started, has lived with me sort of the drip Vietnamese coffee. And I do it on days when I need an extra boost. And you know what I’m talking about? Right? Like, espresso onto milk. That’s also happening at this time. Okay, Su, let’s get into your item.

SuChin Pak

All right, kids. I may be the last person on Earth to get on this train. But have you heard of Honey, the coupon extension on your browser? Claire, have you heard of this? Are we the last people on earth to use this? Is this so pedestrian? I don’t know. Was this invented in 2009?

Kulap Vilaysack

No, Su, I’ve never heard of this.

SuChin Pak

Okay. So go click on the link. And basically what it is, is an extension on your browser. So whenever you do any online shopping, it will apply any of the coupons out there in the interweb to your cart. And it’s as simple as that. And so I’ve been using it for like a week. And I find that it mainly works if you’re talking about the big stores, right? You know, the Walmart’s the Kohl’s. You know, the Amazons, like those kinds of places generally have a lot more coupons. But I look at it as there’s no work, you just add it on to your browser. They say on there that they don’t collect your information to sell to third parties that they just do it to apply these coupons. And it’s like digging around for change in your couch. You know, some days you’re gonna find like, three bucks. Some days you’re gonna find, you know, a quarter. But like, for example, I bought these outdoor seat covers for our chairs. Yeah. And I bought them on Kohl’s, you know, whatever I went to check out and Honey did its thing and then voila. $16 save, free $16 Free $16, you know, and so, it’s little things like that. It’s nothing mind blowing, but I feel like if you’re into saving money and wanting to spend zero-time efforting into that this could be a very easy add to cart. That’s all I’m saying. It’s only on your desktop too, by the way, not on your phone, only on your desktop. And you know, they’ll have things like listen, is it a trap? A honey trap? Do they on their home site have places where there’s a lot of sales? Have I been to a few of those things this week? That was my little add to cart for the week.

Kulap Vilaysack

Okay, adding to cart, Su you and I’ve been talking about press on nails.

SuChin Pak

By the way it’s not like we discussed it together offline. We independently went down the rabbit hole of press on nails.

Kulap Vilaysack

Did you ever purchase press on nails?

SuChin Pak

I purchased press on nails but I did not purchase Olive & June even though I sent those out because they were having a great sale.

Kulap Vilaysack  14:04

So I purchased these Olive & June’s at Target. They’re still on. I put them on Thursday. One popped off of my thumb because I’m very aggressive with this thumb, Su.

SuChin Pak

What are you doing with that thumb?

Kulap Vilaysack

I’m using the nail which obviously, you shouldn’t be using the nail you should be using your fingers when you’re prying things open and it popped off twice once when I was trying to put on like zip up a dress and I was leveraging the nail so that popped off but I was on my way out I was like I’ll just like quickly glue back glue it and it worked and you can just put it back on. But then it popped off last night I was like cleaning up after dinner. Now, I love it, Su. It was easy to put on it. They look great. I got a lot of I’ve been getting complements that people don’t realize they didn’t they don’t realize that they’re not my nails.

SuChin Pak

No, they look so natural.

Kulap Vilaysack

They’re a medium length. And okay, so the question is going to be though what the removal will be like and what the condition of my nails will be.

SuChin Pak

Well, what’s your thumb like?

Kulap Vilaysack

Well, right now, it is caked with glue. I tried to take it off with acetone. I have not looked at the instructions yet. So I’m not at that place yet. I am not coming to you from a place of knowledge. Because otherwise Su, I’m living this life. Like if that’s the case, you know, I will. This is fantastic. I don’t have to worry about shipping. You know, again, 10 bucks.

SuChin Pak

Like that’s I cannot believe they’re still on from Thursday because you texted, you group texted and saying like, look, I’m trying these on and I was like, Oh, tell us how long they last. And this is now Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. You’re in day six.

Kulap Vilaysack  16:06

And I don’t think aside from the one that popped off. They’re great. They don’t feel like I’m doing this. This is fun. Did I buy myself for Christmas because of that big sale? Did I hit like a whole set? You have everything you need if you just buy the Olive & June set, but then there’s an additional like, just for press on system that I got.

SuChin Pak

Ku can’t pass up a system. Are you kidding me?

Kulap Vilaysack

I can’t pass it up. And in that system, there’s this cuticle serum with Cactus Flower. Oh, that’s what I’m up to right now. Just make sure my cuticles are nice and moist.

SuChin Pak

You guys, she is painting her moist cuticles with cactus juice. What a scam.

Kulap Vilaysack

Oh, I’m sorry. Do you want me to have cactus. Not flower but cactus like cuticles. No, Su, trying to live my best life here.

SuChin Pak

I find that the very few times I’ve had my nails done. It’s like you’re, it’s like you channel a different person. You know what I mean? Like your personality changes. Oh, I guess I am. You know, I am gorgeous I don’t know if I told you. You got the memo. I got the memo

Kulap Vilaysack

Do you know what’s kind of scary is that I haven’t really done my nails that much during this whole time. And the second I put these on people have noticed it. That means they noticed my broke ass nails before. That’s the truth guys. And they didn’t say anything and they’re so happy to say something now that’s a relief to them.

SuChin Pak

Wow. Wow That’s hard to hear, that’s got you know, tiny shovels for fingernails at this point, just gardening sheer shovels on my hands.

Kulap Vilaysack  18:04

Sometimes I think I’m invisible. Like I’m like, nobody sees my mustache hairs. But like I bet they do see it.

SuChin Pak

Because when you wax that thing off people are like, hey, what’s up clean face? What’s up peaches in, peaches in clean face? And you’re like oh, thank you, I get it.

Kulap Vilaysack

You know just something to think about you know keep you up at night.

SuChin Pak

Oh, one of our lovely listeners had dammed and said that she shares my problem of having salmon folds for eyelids. But she meant it and I’m going to be talking about this till the day I die because it’s a problem. It’s an affliction that I and I think a lot of people or some people may share and it’s going to take a lot but when I do find something that works for the Omega threes I’ve got, I have to share it and this is I would say a game changer. So I went to, I was at CVS and I came across this little you know end cap for LA Girl. And I was like oh, I’m just gonna try it. And then I went back because it worked so well and I bought every single color. This is an eyeliner. That does not move and it is not a liquid eyeliner. It is a pencil. The best one that works is the LA Girl ultimate intense stay auto liner. Look at this. Look at this color I bought it in, this was such a pretty color. And it does not move. You put it on, and my oils come, my flaxseed my omega threes, my all of it comes, my sesame oil comes out of my lids all day.

Kulap Vilaysack  20:09

Why would you have some dispensary of various oils? Both vitamin and cooking? Like how can I do that?

SuChin Pak

I start off I wake up clean face. My lids are like Vaseline from the very, very beginning.

Kulap Vilaysack

Now what I’m realizing is this never-ending navy. That’s the Zendaya eyeliner.

SuChin Pak

I’m sorry, let me bust it out. What color is this? I’m gonna DM you this color. It’s like an electric blue shimmer. If I could read it, I would. It’s on here. But I actually can’t read it because I can’t see anymore. It’s called Paradise purple. The glide gel liner. Gorgeous.

Kulap Vilaysack

That’s amazing. Thank you for that game changer. And thank you for our listener for DMing us and asking us that question.

Kulap Vilaysack

The last add to cart that I want to bring up is Su, this is a big one. I’ve turned the pandemic corner Sue. I have been adding to cart being with the people. I really have and I know this is weird.

SuChin Pak

It is weird because also like you are one of those people and there are few out there that have not caught any version of the vid. You have been, you have managed to avoid every single iteration. And there you are.

Kulap Vilaysack

I have been pivoting. I have been ducking.

SuChin Pak  22:02

Giggling behind a fan. A little Geisha fan.

Kulap Vilaysack

Definitely wearing different costumes. Definitely. And but here I find myself the year of the water Tiger.

SuChin Pak

Soaking and foaming.

Kulap Vilaysack

Dear friend, best friend, June Diane Raphael, co-founder of the Jane Club. She asked if I would host a Jane Club Galentine’s day party. And at the time that I said yes, months ago or a month ago. Who knows? I don’t know what time is. Even though I am on psychedelic mushrooms.

SuChin Pak

Actually, probably because you’re on psychedelic mushrooms.

Kulap Vilaysack

Yeah, time is nonlinear and it’s unimportant.

SuChin Pak

Okay, guys, I just want you to know, okay, I just want you to note these because, hey, you need to know these things may happen to you if you start eating these gummies. And if you’re okay with it, I’m okay with it. She’s okay with it. Continue.

Kulap Vilaysack

Okay, fair. I just want to remind everybody that I’m taking it for productivity and creativity.

SuChin Pak

And also don’t muddle it with your Vietnamese coffee excuse.

Kulap Vilaysack

How sad. Here’s the thing, though, is that I am always muddling things. Part of the pitch June gave me was I didn’t have to do anything. It was gonna be in my backyard. Were gonna handle everything. And they certainly did. And they did rapid testing on my driveway as people came in. They were handed a drink and had to chill out for like, 20 minutes while they waited. And then it was an all-outdoor event. But like it was one of the first times where like..

SuChin Pak

You hosted this event? I hosted it

Kulap Vilaysack

I hosted it in my backyard. I mean, this is the best way to host an event to go to any party is just a walk down your own stairs.

SuChin Pak  24:02

Yeah, because 10 minutes, you sneak right back up. snooze it into bed. Nobody even knows that you left the party. Technically you didn’t.

Kulap Vilaysack

They cleaned up. What a dream. Got to be with my girls, so much laughter, it was just like the best time. And then we all know, famously my niece day to day. She’s been wanting to get me to go to this hip. New LA bagel place Su, which I will take you to when you’re down to LA, so it’s called Courage Bagels. Su, I was waiting in line for bagels last Friday, waiting in line. Was I hungover from the Jane Club event.

SuChin Pak

What’s so great about these bagels?

Kulap Vilaysack

Thank you for asking, Su. There was such a line such like when we were driving two blocks, I could smell the delicious baked goodness. Now I know some of our listeners who’ve been with us since the very beginning goes, Ku. Didn’t your doctor explicitly say you should not be eating carbs? Yes. Now moving past that, we’re moving past that now. Dr. Becker said and I’m gonna answer my friend Su because that would be rude. The reason why they’re so good, is that they, they’re both crispy on the outside, soften inside, but there isn’t that dense. You know, some bagels, they say it’s like you’re eating a little […]. But if you get something like, you know, Dana, she knows about all the things She got me these gummies, she knows things like a hottie. And a hottie is the freshest hot bagel with butter on it. Like the freshest bagel out of the oven. I got a everything bagel with cream cheese and tomatoes with lemon pepper and some oils. Divine. So good.

SuChin Pak  26:05

I could get a bagel tattooed on my butt. I’m just saying. That’s how much I love bagel. I love it so much I could get it tattooed on my butt.

Kulap Vilaysack

Yeah, yeah. common phrase. Last thing, this is gonna dry. This is gonna take you for a loop here. I straight up went to a wedding on Saturday. I was with the people when I tell you I’m with people.

SuChin Pak

Were you invited to this wedding?

Kulap Vilaysack

Nope. Nope. I just had a sense that I needed to quickly put on a dress. Head to Highland Park and just see if there was a line. It was my dear friends, Tim Baltz and Lily Sullivan’s wedding. And the lead up to it as like, how are we gonna go? Are we gonna go and we really threw caution to the wind and went and it was so joyous. Their vows were unbelievable, the Vows alone were worth the risk. And then just to be with friends and to be out and about was amazing. You know, do I have COVID? I don’t know. I mean, I tested yesterday it already came back negative with I know so soon. I’m not sure but I’m at a place right now where at least if I get the vid, if I get the omi if I get the rona, that at least now we have therapeutics at least now I feel a little better about it. I just I get so much out of the kinetic energy from other people. Our friends, we brought them up before Jessica St. Clair and June Diane Raphael have an episode that’s maybe like two, two weeks ago, maybe a month ago. And it’s they’re talking about small talk with Casey Wilson. I recommend it so much. So Casey and Jess are like masters of small talk. And what they talked about that I can relate to is like I get something off of shallow but true, quick connections with people when I met courage bagel, and she’s like, Oh my god, I like your nails. I’m like, oh, I got them at Target. They were only like 10 bucks, that’s great. And that was this quick. Nothing but that, it gives me a lift.

SuChin Pak  28:43

Yeah, like you get a little endorphin hit off of that.

Kulap Vilaysack

And it’s not just about like getting lost in a conversation that you know, in line that I don’t want to have. But it’s this, that quick moment of human interaction that like, I get something out of so I’m doing more of that.

SuChin Pak

You know, I just have to say and not exaggerating, when you’re describing this, these quick interactions, small talk. My heart is beating so fast right now. Like the anxiety. Wow. Like, I’m really noticing how much that gives me. You know what I mean? So much anxiety that quick hit the small talk. It’s one of my greatest fears in life. You know? Because we’re so different in that way. But you know, obviously, it’s, yeah, like, I can’t imagine how hard it’s been, you know, especially this. I mean, you know, the first year we’re all kind of in it together. And now we’re I don’t know what it is. I think now people are making choices for their mental health. You know, they’re like, okay, I have to prioritize what is actually going to do me more harm is putting myself at physical risk or continue down this path mentally where I am not well, and you hit it. You hit a hipster bagel spot in LA. You hosted a Jane event. And then you went to a wedding.

Kulap Vilaysack  30:25

I mean, this was Thursday, Friday, Saturday. I really didn’t know Sunday was I a lump on the couch all day? Sure was. It was worth it. It was worth it for me. Su, give us a remove from cart.

SuChin Pak

Listen, my removed from card is simple. And it is obvious. I posted a while ago that while I was recording another podcast guesting on, I’M SORRY. Also on Lemonada, I was recording and I kept hearing this weird kind of almost some Oh, whistling is what I thought and I thought that’s a very strange noise coming from the other room. When I finished up, I went outside peeked outside and my husband, Michael Bender was sitting at his desk, eyes closed, swaying his body into it, whistling to hold music. And I thought we have been here a long time. A lot of us are living and working with our partners. And these things are starting to great, to just great like a ginger zest. And I bring that up because that started to get me to some of the other removed from carts. So remove from cart just whistling to hold music while you’re trying to get work done. You know?

Kulap Vilaysack

Your partner, yeah. Just you know, my friend Mike Bender, I understand why that would be annoying. But I also am like kind of happy that like, Mike Bender had like, a little bit of body bliss. You know, that he was feeling it.

Kulap Vilaysack  32:15

I had to be broken up this habit because in the house I grew up and we were just yelling.

SuChin Pak

Swaying and whistling to hold music. And I think both things can be true. Both things can be true. I found it to be annoying, but also hilarious. The other thing I find just annoying non-hilarious, which is I want to remove from cart if you have a question for someone in your house, go into the room, that person is in and ask the question. Don’t do this from another room across the house, […] I’m like and then I get incense triggered. I’m at my desk and I’m like, I’m not getting up. He has the question. So I keep working. And then I have to say, I’m not getting up. What? I can’t hear you. So then he says louder […] does not come into the […] room.

SuChin Pak

It’s rude. If you have a question for another person go into the room they have that courtesy to go into that room and say hey, do you know where the olive oil is? Ask it ask if they’re to that person. Don’t yell it from somewhere and then I have to try to decipher or you want me to get up and go to your room. So you can ask me your question.

Kulap Vilaysack  34:02

He was in the kitchen and so when you finally yell it, it will be closer to the area that you.. Okay my remove from cart is, you know when you earlier you were we were talking about the Zendaya eyeliner, and you were trying to read the packaging it well it reminds me of my remove from cart. I give up this regular font size on my phone in my electronics, I remove it from cart. I am going to be honest; I need it to be larger. I make fun of Casey. I think I made fun of you, yours is slightly larger. And now I’m just like what am I doing? Why? I can’t see like, who am I trying to prove with my 10 and 11 size fonts? I cannot see.

SuChin Pak

Three things happen when you turn 40, number one, thing gets dryer. Number two, your teeth fall out of your head. And number three, you can’t see. Oh, I know you had perfect vision. Oh, I know. You never needed glasses. Oh, I know that you always, you were always known for your vision and your perfect vision. I’m just talking to the people like my husband who cannot believe that they need glasses. And I’m like, it’s just fact. It’s because your eyeballs are drying out because you’re old. I don’t know if that’s actually fact.

Kulap Vilaysack

If you are with me and I’m not wearing glasses, and I have contacts on and I’m driving don’t get in the car with me that is at your own risk. I cannot see. So now Claire, can you show Auntie how to make it a bigger size? Claire, show auntie how to do it on the phone.

Claire Jones  36:06

Let’s see settings. Go to settings. Fonts. Oh, no, that’s wrong. Keyboard.
