I’m doing good. You know, I’m doing good. We’re getting through it. We’re getting through it. And I feel like we got through the beginning of the year-ish. Not so great. Still looking pretty bleak out there. But then we’re rolling into summer and I’m just hoping that’s gonna bring some brighter days for all of us.

Kulap Vilaysack 

You’re really skipping spring here?

SuChin Pak 

Oh yeah, yeah. Spring is already just in the trash like hot burning trash. And I’m just like, You know what? Hey, there’s summer. There’s summer. Right behind spring. So I don’t know. It’s been a lot of that. I think when you’re with school aged children, you live by the school calendar. It’s just a buzz, a buzz about spring break and summer coming up. What about you?

Kulap Vilaysack 

Well, things are good. I mean, I’m trying to think about I was gonna launch right into my add to carts. But let’s just take a breather and see how are we inside our bodies. Mindful? Still doing mushrooms.

I’ve heard so. You know this brand has been around for a while but man they keep coming out with hits. You know, viral hits. So tell me about I haven’t I haven’t actually bought Kosas probably since they launched God knows when.

Yes. Still working for you, game changer.

I started my love affair with Kosas through a goop recommendation. And this concealer. It’s called the revealer concealer and it’s a concealer meets eye cream. So Su, you know about clean skincare, this is your wheelhouse. So this idea of concealer, which looks great on me feels great on me but also that I could give me you know, a little bit of skincare. Oh hell yeah. And then it just led me I’m like well I like this brand; I like what they stand for I like more than anything I like how it feels on the skin. I just started buying stuff and hitting up when sales were happening especially during the holidays I was like yep, here we go, add to cart and so I really love the tinted face oil, Su and I have dry skin, why I really like it for me not only for the dry skin but also I like a light coverage I liked my freckles to come through I just want like an even look. This has been spot on.

Tell me about face oils because I’ve been interested in it and it’s like such the rage with makeup right now. Does it give you kind of an oily finish? Because when they say face oil I just assumed I was like oh is it going to give you kind of like that oily look which I have on the fence about, you know?

Yeah, because even if like I love like all these like lip oils and the lip oil of course is going to give you that that sheen like you’ve just I don’t know, like sucked off a vegetable oil or someting like that.

SuChin Pak 

What’s it the sucking off part, oil like the vegetable oil or the suck? Okay, okay, sorry. she’s catching her breath. She’s taken herself off video because she needs some time. We know how that feels. So the face oil foundation really is about the sheerness of the product then not necessarily about the like, what you’re left with.

Kulap Vilaysack 

Exactly, exactly. Okay, I think it and it feels you know, it’s gonna be to me it’s less, it’s actually less thick than your normal foundation.

SuChin Pak 

Okay, so now I’m understanding it and now I’m adding to cart because that’s like an everyday you know, it’s probably a little bit more coverage than a tinted moisturizer. Not as much as like typical foundation, and Kosas you know, it’s one of the first skincare brands that this is makeup for skincare freaks and lovers you know they mean like they just have a lot of experience around this I trust this brand, so go on.

So, just so you know my entire face I put it on so that I could you know, and I’ll send you pictures. That’s why I got a highlight my jawline and my cheeks, under my bones, otherwise, we’re just like one like thing you know? Like I’m just like, people are so happy. They just think I’m hitchhiking. I’m a huge hitchhiker be at cars be stopping like you need a ride. Like no sir. Just let me put my bronzer on yet. And then I finish it off with the comfy cloud set, you know, just as I’m walking out, so I don’t have to touch it so much. But it’s a best seller. I recommend it. But now what I’ve been having the most fun with SuChin Pak style is this 10 second eyeshadows and I have them loving it. And this is around the holidays. When SuChin and I were both just buying gifts for ourselves.

It’s a theory, theories are not proven. But we have, we have not been on track. And so maybe that’s why, but I wanted to bring it and I’m so glad. Thank you for reminding me. You guys. We have launched a regular column with our dear friends at New York Magazine, the strategist. It’s our favorite shopping place online, all the racks are there. So they came to us and they said, What about doing a column? It’s called Auntie Approved. And what we’ll do is we will test out products and then give our honest opinion, you know, these aren’t paid these aren’t I mean, we get the products for free. But that’s about it. Because we just basically laugh at each other and shame each other for about 45 minutes. Doing these reviews. It’s been a lot of fun.

She’s a young person and she’s like, alive in the world in New York. And then it’s, me and I look at her and I’m like, God, I used to be somebody you know. And now here I am. Just dirtying up a pan and I’m proud of it too.

I stand behind every word I’ve ever said about your pan but I love you. I love you so goddamn much.

Someone commented and said stop posting pictures of this pan like I think we have to put trigger warnings because there are people that are, you know very particular about things. And so I think that picture of my pan has to come with a trigger warning

So fun. Speaking of loving us, and particularly SuChin and Prince, add to cart Rise, a  pop history of Asian America from the 90s to now by Jeff Yang, Phil Yu and Phillip Wang, SuChin Pak has amazing article, I haven’t read. I haven’t read it yet. I just got the book. But I’m just like, I literally just got the book today. So I haven’t seen it.

SuChin Pak 

First of all, this thing, I have been talking about this thing since we got it. It is so incredible this book. You guys, if you don’t have any coffee table books, this is it. If you don’t have any, you know, history books about Asian Americans have this is it. I mean, it’s so fun. It’s historical. It’s a graphic novel, and my kids are loving it. You know, because it’s so visual. It’s easy to digest. But anyway, yes. And I did a little chapter in there about, how shall I say it reverence for Connie Chung. Yeah. And it was so fun. It’s not what you expect, I think, I think you’re going to be surprised at my Connie Chung story.

Kulap Vilaysack

I’m so happy for the authors. I know Jeff and Phil. Phil Yu is also known as Angry Asian Man, Jeff Yang, also known as Original Spin. And together they have a podcast called They Call us Bruce. So I’ve known these gents. And they were so supportive of me when origin story came out.

By the way, also in Rise, essential viewing, did you even know they were going to do that? Because every decade, so it’s from the 90s to present. So that’s also kind of fun. You know what I mean? It is sometimes you don’t want to sit down and like go back to the Chinese Exclusion Act. You know, there’s something kind of poppy about just from the 90s to now. And so for every decade, what they’ll do is sort of like an essential list of things that you really need to watch to read whatever it is to understand how our culture has been shaped. And your documentary is in it is listed in there. And it’s a very short list, by the way.

Kulap Vilaysack 

I mean, I’m so grateful. It means a lot to me, it really does. It mean, so much.

SuChin Pak 

And Philip weighing, you know, I think he’s shaped how this next generation of Asians and Asian Americans really see themselves in terms of storytelling and media and comedy and representation. And being authentic. You know, I think coming from an era, at least for me, where I felt like leaning into my Asianness was going to exclude me from a career. This is like a totally different generation. And he really is of that group of creators that have made that identity shift possible. So the three guys they have such credibility and such experience. It’s a great book.

Kulap Vilaysack 

Congrats, guys. You know, writing a best seller. That’s huge. So awesome. Speaking of books..

SuChin Pak 

Speaking of books, I didn’t know you’re going to bring a book, but I brought a book. We both got our advanced copy of in a New York minute. So Kate Spencer, our dear friend, one half of the forever 35 podcast. We love those folks, is coming out with a book. It’s called In a New York Minute. And I read this in probably two nights.

I just get really excited to read something of you know, a friend. And this book, it’s kind of like you need right now. It’s like rom-com. It’s silly. It’s a New York love story. What she’s done, I was gonna text her and I haven’t even had a chance to do it yet. And I flagged all the places in this book where there’s like a New York restaurant, or a cafe or a bar that if you lived in New York, you know, you know it’s not like this not like Empire State Building. It’s like, you know, […] who you know, which is like this little cafe at […] that’s been there forever and all the Brooklyn spots, Grimaldi’s pizza, and, you know, it gave me such Sex in the City vibes. It gave me such like New York. I loved every minute of it. And it’s just a fun, fantastic romance story. So it’s perfect for you know, we’re talking about I mean, I’m talking about summer coming up.

Kulap Vilaysack 

I was gonna say a beach read a vacation read.

SuChin Pak 

you’re gonna swallow this. And you know, in two bites, this thing is so fun. And I don’t know, it just was nice to get to something that wasn’t heavy. And I was so cheered up and I really needed something like this. That’s probably another reason why I read it so quickly. Because I just was like, oh, this is actually kind of what I need. Something just like light and fun and takes me back to a version of New York that doesn’t feel scary, or so far away, you know? Felt very familiar. And so she just did a great job. You guys. Do you know how hard it is to write a book and get it published? And then have people buy it? You know, whether it’s Rise or you know, in a New York, I mean, they’re fantastic books, but like, what an endeavor so I just applaud Kate and this book is fantastic. So fun. Can’t wait to get into it.

Su, have you seen Pixar’s Turning Red, yet?

SuChin Pak 

I have not because I’m waiting for my kids. Of course I cannot watch that without my kids. And we were going to do it this past weekend. But they had to give up some screen time. And we’re not going to get into that because that’s not that my Add to Cart.

Oh, yeah. Sounds like some removed from carts. Got it. Yeah, got it. All right. When the kids are out of the doghouse, we have to make sure to watch turning red. I cannot speak more glowingly about this film. It made me so happy to talk about representation talk about characters just being if you’re not aware of it. It’s directed by Domee Shi, a credible voice cast including Sandra Oh, who plays the mom. It’s about puberty. It’s magical puberty. It’s about daughter and mother relationships. It’s about being okay with that relationship changing, evolving. And it’s so funny. I am somebody who as an adult without kids, I have watched every Pixar film, every Disney film. And while Pixar is absolutely buoyant, I can’t I’m trying to think like, has there been like a really funny Pixar film? And this film makes multiple times laugh out loud moments. Casey and I were talking about it just the other day, just like, oh, they’re just like some really funny jokes. I think the animation is interesting and different than other Pixar films, and certainly, you know, just again, let’s circle back to wrap up representation here. It’s about a young girl, 13-year-old who is growing up in a neighborhood in Toronto. It’s certainly a love letter to Toronto, but also I found it just so relatable. Please everybody watching some Disney plus which is gonna lead me to my removed from cards and slide me right it’s my remove from cart. Which is, am I ethnically Chinese? Yes but that’s not you know, culturally I’m not did I grew up in Toronto No, but I when I tell you that I enjoyed it for the story that it is, number one it’s a coming of age. I’ve seen coming of ages of boys and related to it of young boys and young girls not of my race or ethnic background and I related to it. We can all relate to a coming of age if we indeed have come of age. Why I’m frothing at the mouth right now is I’m removing for cart a review that has since been pulled from Cinema Blend That was critical of a film, which is, by the way is their job to be critical. That’s not the part. That’s not the part. The review is pulled off line after being called sexist and racist by other people of the press, by the cast. But the managing director wrote a review saying that the film’s appeal was too limited because it’s set in Asian community of Toronto. So I’m just gonna read his quote, okay. Okay. He said, I recognize the humor in the film, but connected with none of it. By rooting turning red, very specifically in the Asian community of Toronto. The film legitimately feels like was made for Domi. She’s friends. That’s the director and immediate family members once and he called that, which is fine, but also a tad limiting in scope. And then he continues some Pixar films are made for universal audiences, turning red is not, the target audience for this one feels very specific and very narrow. If you’re in it, this might work very well for you. I’m not in it. This was exhausting. This was exhausting, SuChin.

SuChin Pak 

Wow. Yeah. I mean, other Pixar films, listen, okay. We don’t have to sit and talk about how ridiculous this is everybody. Anybody with half a brain?

Kulap Vilaysack 

Well figure out like I posted this. And then somebody who followed me, wrote, I’ve listened to the editors name is Shawn for years on Cinema Blend. I don’t think his comments were meant in any sort of racist, sexist way. I think he was simply stating that it’s a nice experience. I’m like, bro, like, so I wrote him back. And I was like, Hey, have you seen the film? That he says it’s a nice experience is the problem. And then he’s just trying, then he was like, Well, okay, well, okay, problematic for sure. But not overtly racist and sexist. It’s like, what are we? What are we talking about right now? And I would, again, argue, maybe you don’t realize what you’re doing? Maybe, maybe it’s so hard for you not to be centered.

SuChin Pak  32:19

It’s frightening. You know, the erasure they feel. And I would even venture to say that storytelling is also about a specific experience too, those are some of the most memorable pieces of film or books, you know, that I’ve ever seen or read is when you’re reading about an experience that you personally haven’t been in, but that’s also what’s expanding about it and creative and, you know, explosive about it like, yeah, you only want to see the stories that you know, again, and again, with the same type of people, the same. How many Viking shows do we need on Netflix? I seen all of them, by the way.

Kulap Vilaysack 

Good news for that person? There’s a pantheon of content for you, then there’s so much for you. Yeah, most, you know, a good section of the Criterion Collection. Any streaming service has everything you could possibly need then.

SuChin Pak 

CBS, NBC, ABC, any of those places may be good for you. But also this is for you. This is the reason why these films need to be made is for you. I know this story. I haven’t seen the movie. And I know the story. And I would love to see myself reflected. And that’s great. But it’s also for those who think that this isn’t about the experience that should be incorporated into their own lives like this is also for you. It’s not just for us. This is the whole point of why this is made. And it’s so common when you have something that’s not centered in whiteness, and not centered in maleness.

And so that it’s speaking of the maleness, there’s been some conservative voices who find talking about puberty and the mere, like, image of a pad to be obscene. And then also, just like, this is promoting, you know, daughters not listening to their mothers. It’s like, ah, oh, exhausting.

SuChin Pak 

Yeah, you know, it’s important to support books and movies like this. Because this is what they’re up against these creators pitching, you know what it’s like, yeah, I do anything that’s not centered on the quote unquote, universal experience, and then to get it made and put it out into the world and then that gets criticized that it’s not about them.

Kulap Vilaysack 

It’s so crazy because it is so universal. So the themes are so universal.

SuChin Pak 

It’s Pixar. It’s not even like we’re like talking about some indie art. It’s like Pixar is in the business of making universally loved movies that make a lot of money, you know, that’s what they do.

Kulap Vilaysack

they do well, but that’s also for me my fear somebody in the business is like see, didn’t do well, see, it was too narrow. Yeah. I just listened to the March 1st episode where you talked about stepping into her bra like pants and just like pulling it up over her shoulders. And they want to say I do this too.
